REINFORCING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 22, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM F. KERLIN and EDWARD W. BOWEN, citizens of the United States, residing at-Rockfield and Delphi, in the county of Carroll and State of- Indiana, have invented certain new and use-- 'ful Improvements in Reinforcing Devices;
and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the'art to which it appertains to make and use the same- This invention relates to new and useful improvements in reinforcements for plastic material when molded in various shapes.
It isfan object of the invention to provide a novel device of this character employing a reinforce consisting'of a sheet of metal provided with blades or flaps extending in varimake effective resistance to any jar or pres-- sure coming upon any part of the body when completed.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel reinforcement for a plastic post wherein said reinforcement projects beyond a face of the post to produce a means for the attachment of wires. It is also an object of the invention to pro: vide, in the projected portion .of the reinforcement elongated openings, each having in communication therewith a slot or slit from the outer edge of the projected portion, said elongated openings permitting the metal 'to be swung to one side so as to admit the lateral wires of the fence.
It is also an object of the invention to rovide a novel device of this character w ich be simple in construction, efiicient and advantageous in practice and comparatively inevrpenslve to manufacture.

While the next blade is in thesame plane with the first named blade. bent in a direction opposite to that of the second named blade on a proximately the same degree of angle. This "arrangement continues the entire length of the body 1, and it has been found best that the blades be of such Width as to permit a straight blade to be located at both ends of the strip.
In order to permit the reinforcement to give additional strength to the post orother bodyformed of plastic material, when ap lied, there are assed through the eyes or s eeves The next blade is 4' of the b ades the wires 5, which may be secured thereto in any desired manner, but preferably. by brazing. By the use of these wires the post is very materially strengtlk ened, as it permits effective-resistance to any jar or pressure coming. u on any part of the post, as is believed to e apparent. side blades will withstand any pressure or jar on the sides of the post. The reinforcement is further rovided with. the wires 6which are positioned 3, and interposed between said stra ght blades and the side blades in proximity to the junction of the side blades with the body 1. These wires 6 are also brazed to the various blades 3 with which they contact. By
the employment of these wires 6 the reinforcement is greatly strengthened the entire length thereof, but more especially, when-applied to the post, at the breakof the post or ground line when the post is set. t
It is believed well to state that the 'res 5 and 6 extend the entire length of the body 1, but it has been desired that certain of the wires-Sand 6 be projected above the top of v projected portion 1s provided wt clined slit 9., These elongated openings are for'the retention of the wires forming part of the fence and by having the slit extended from therouter edge of the projected portion '2 above the'openings 8 the slit does not in any way decrease the strength of the metal immediately in.fr0nt of the opening 8. By having the opening 8 elongated, the metal can be sprung to .one side so as to admit the lateral wires of the fence which can be readily suitable metal is slit at intervals pressed into said openings, The slits 9 being above the res ective openings and cut to the .rear edge an above the openings prevents the wires when in the o enings-froni being forced out through the s its, a feature which in the practical use of the post is found most essential.
In-Fig. 3 is shown a cross section fof a slightly modified'form of post, such post as is intended to be employed as a tele 'ra h pole, or the like, In this instance the %0 y 10, of along its opposed longitudinal id'ge to form blades 11 which are bent in almanner similar tojthat disclosed in Fig. 1. This reinforcement is also provided with reinforcing wires :12 and 13, arr an ed similar to the wires 5 and 6 (hereinbe ore referred to), respectively.

'0. 492,573. What We claim.is: l. A metallic reinforcement for plastic material, comprising a fiat body ortion having one of its. edges slitted at pre-c etermined distances throughout itslength to form blades,
each alternate blade remaining in alinement with the face of the body and each intermediary blade extending at an angle to the face of the body and disposed alternately at opposite sides of the body, said blades having wire-engaging means thereon.
2. A metallic reinforcement for plastic material, comprisin a fiat body ortion having one of its edges slitted at preetermined distances throughout its length to form blades,

6. A meta 1c reinforcement for plas tic ina- 5 terial comprising a flat body portion having a plurality of blades projecting therefrom, said blades projecting at an angle to the body portion at opposite sides thereof, and wires or rods connecting the blades together, there :10 being one rod for each set of blades and each tances throughout its length to form blades, some of the blades remaining in alinement with the face of the body and other blades extending at an angle to the face of thebody and disposed at opposite sides of the body, 20 said blades having wire-engaging means thereon.
