Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVER Jonnsou, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tacoma, county of Pierce, State of WVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined l/Vindow Lifts and Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to sash-lifts and locks; and one of the objects is to provide means whereby the sashes may be automatically raised or lowered or partially raised or lowered simultaneously or independently of each other.
A further object of the invention is to provide an automatic locking and unlocking device, whereby the sashes may be loclred or unlocked in their respective positions, and a manually controlled attachment to operate said locking device adapted for use in case of high windows.
l/Vith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims; it being understood that minor changes in the detail construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of the inside of a window frame and sashes showing the invention as applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view thereof showing the relation of the parts of the invention. Fig. 3 is a front view of one of the sashes showing a rack bar attached to each side thereof. Fig. 4 is a side view of one of the rack bars. Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view of the frame and sash illustrating the positions of the shafts and spur wheels. Fig. 6 is a bottom plan view of the combined lever, pawl and pulley. Fig. 7 is a side view thereof. Fig. 8 is an elevation of one of the shafts and the spur wheel and drum thereon. Fig. 9 is a side view of one of the spur wheels. Fig. 10 is a fragmentary View of the window frame showing the positioning of one of the shaft supporting plates. Fig. 11 is an elevation of the spring for holding the pawl lever in looking engagement with the spur wheel. Fig. 12 is a vertical sectional view of the sashes showing the shafts in their relative positions.
Similar reference characters designate corresponding parls throughout the several views of the drawings, referring to which A is the window frame with sashes b therein. Arranged at each side of the sashes b are rack bars 0, adapted to engage annular series of notches d on horizontal shafts (Z for raising or lowering the sashes f). mechanism comprises two of the horizontal shaft-s (Z, or one for each sash used, supported in plates 7r arranged on the inner sides of the frame A and at the meeting rails of the sashes b, one of the shafts (if being arranged between the meeting rails of the sashes l), and the other in front of the lower sash, the inner shaft operating the upper sash and theouter shaft the lower sash. On one end of each of the shafts (Z is mounted a combined spur wheel and drum 6, said spur-wheels and drums being positioned within the frame A, between and in alinement with upper and lower guide pulleys a and (1 The guide pulleys a and a are set in apertures formed in the inner casing of the frame A, the upper guide pulley a being above and adjacent to the drum and spur-wheel c, the lower guide pulley a being at any desired distance below said spur-wheel.
Interposed between the drum and spurwheel 6 and the upper guide pulley a, is a pawl lever f, one end of which is pivoted within the casing and its free end projects through the inner casing of the frame A, for the purpose hereinafter described. On the under side of the pawl leverf is a locking lug f adapted to engage and lock the spur-whee 6 against rotation. li'founted on one side of and adjacent to the free end of the pawl lcvcrf is a tension pulley and. to normally hold the pawl lever f into locking engagement with the spur-wheel e, I provide a spring 9.

The operation is as follows: When it is de sired to raise or lower the windows, the cord 71 is first pulled outward, which, causing tension on the cord, will elevate the tension pulley j, and this carries the pawl lever f upward, releasing the locking lug f from the spur-wheel 6 so that the drum and spurwheel are free to rotate. By now pulling the cord either upwardly or downwardly the drum and spur-wheel c are caused to rotate, thereby imparting motion to the shaft (1, and by the notches d of shaft (Z being engaged by the rack bars 0 of the sashes b, the sashes may be raised or lowered as desired.
To manipulate windows that are high and difficult to reach, the operator has only to raise either the free end of pawl lever f or the angular member h of the operating rod h.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a device of the class described, a shaft having an annular series of notches, a window sash, a rack bar carried by said sash and engaging the notches of said shaft, means for locking said shaft against movement, and an operating cable for releasing said locking means.
2. In a device of the class described, a shaft having an annular series of notches, a window sash, a rack bar carried by said sash and engaging the notches of said shaft, means for locking said shaft against movement, an operating cable for releasing said locking means, and a connection between said cable and said shaft whereby the latter is operated by said cable.
3. In a device of the class described, a shaft, a gear carried thereby, a window sash, a rack carried by said sash and in mesh with said shaft, whereby said shaft is adapted to operate said sash, means cooperating with said gear for locking said shaft against move ment, and an operating cable for releasing said locking means.

In a device of the class described, a shaft, a window sash connected to said shaft for operation thereby, a pawl with locking means to prevent movement of the shaft, a drum associated with said shaft, and an oper ating cable wound upon said drum and assoshaft, a window sash, a rack carried by said window sash and engaging said shaft, whereby the sash is operated by said shaft, a pawl, a gear carried by said shaft with which said pawl is normally engaged to revent movement of the shaft, a drum a so carried by said shaft, and an operating cable wound upon said drum and associated with said pawl for operating the shaft and releasing the pawl from engagement therewith.
7. In a device of the class described, a shaft, a window sash, a rack carried by said window sash and engaging said shaft, whereby the sash is operated by said shaft, a s ring-actuated pawl, a gear carried by said shaft with which said pawl is normally engaged to prevent movement of the shaft, a drum also carried by said shaft, and an operating cable wound upon said drum and associated with said pawl for operating the shaft and releasing the pawl from engagement therewith.
8. In a device of the class described, a shaft, a window sash connected to said shaft for operation thereby, a drum associated with said shaft, an operating cable wound .upon said drum for operating said shaft, a pawl with locking means to prevent movement of said shaft, and means for manually releasing said. awl from engagement with said shaft.
