Leners Patent No. 92,555, man .hwy 1s, 18Go.
ICIVIPIROVE'.lMifElllWllil IN STEERING-APPARATUS.
The Schedule referred te, iin thllese Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom itAm'a/y concern:
Be it known .that I, HENRY YORK, of Smiths Landing, in the county of Atlantic, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and improved Steering- Gear; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those. skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which-.-
Figure l is a vertical cross-section of my invention through the line :n w, lig.V 2.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the invent-ion. Similar letters ot' reti-:rencev indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple and etlectivc steeling-apparatus for vessels, and which which uprights may be affixed to the tiller and'arise 4therefrom, thus characterizing the whole apparatus as a travelling-wheel to standing-wheels, so called.
By the employment of two drums instead of one, as heretofore,v .[,dispe'nse with the steering-tackles which-are necessary to obtain sufticient .purchase on the tiller, and in dispensing with the said tacklesy'ob- -viate the use of'a long 4 fall, or rope, which, from the number of turns it makes on a single drum in putting the helm hard up or hard down, 4the turns are liable to ride or overlap each other.
In dispensing withthe tackles, or such double or single-rove purchases, I am enabled'to employ chains instead of ropes, whereas the employment of chains with'the ordinary single drum and' tiller, and deck.- blocks, has beenattempted and abandoned long ago, as objectionable, from thel liability of the chains to jam in the blocks. 4,.
By my invention, however, as only one single block is'use-d for cach chain, and those being attached to the tiller in such a manner-that the chains will ride on only a quadrant of the sheave, there is no'liability of the chain fouling or jamming in the block, as will be obvious to mariners and others skilled in sl'nh, mechanism.
By the-employrnent of .decreasing'gaan that is, a
cog-wheel operated by a pinion on the steering-wheel shaft, I gain sufficient purchase to operate the rudder without thev aid of any further or accessory gear, as tackles andthe like.
My invention will be better understood by reference to the drawings, where A'is a steering-wheel of the usual construction, mounted ou a metal shaft, a, which bears a small pinion b, engaging with the toothed rims or cogwheels d, on the drums B B, or the shafts thereof.
The shaft a, andthe shafts or gudgeons of the .drums BB, are afforded bearings in broad uprights `C, whichrin the drawings, are shown affixed to and arising from the tiller D.
Each of the tiller-'ropes or 'chains (preferably the l latter) is attached to its respective drum, and leads down through a'tiller-block, f, containing a` single shea've, and thence tosome suitable device, as an eyebolt, y, aflixed in the deck beyondA the travel of the tiller D.
The tiller-rope or chain thus consists of a singlepart, and the number of turns Vwhich is required to be wound on either drum to putthe tiller hardaport or hard-a-starboard, will not be more than two or three turns with drums of the usual diameter, thus enabling the* vtiller to'be rapidly operated, whileV the purchase obtained by the pinionb, of less diameter 'than the cog-wheels d., enables the tiller to be operated with the application of the same or less power to the steering-wheel than with the ordinary single drum and tiller-tackles.
The pinion aud cog-wheels may be made with V- sha-ped faces to operate as friction-gearing, if desired. Having thus described my invention, ,I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters latent- ,The arrangement, upon the tiller D, of the uprights O C, tiller-blocks j' f, and drums B B, carrying the cog-wheels d al adapted to engagewith the pinion b,
upon the shaft a ot the steering-wheel, also having its bearings in the uprights, whereby a travelling steel'- ing-gear is produced, as herein shown and described.' rlhe above* specification of my invention signed by me, this 9th day of October, 186
HENRY YORK.
