GUIDING DEVICE FOR SEWINGJYIACHINES. it
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 22, 1909.
Application filed July 6, 1908. Serial No. 142,087.
To all whom ii may concern:
i11g'machines and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel device of this character adapted to be employed in conjunction with attachments to sewing machines, as a tucker att'achment, for example.
It is also an object of the invention to rovide a novel device of this character w ich can 'be adjusted to goods of different widths and which can be readily moved to position the fabric with relation to the tucker at- 'tachmen't.
Afurther object of the invention is to provide a novel device of this character so mounted as to be adjustable relatively to the tucker attachment, as may be required by the necessities of practice.
, Another object of the invention is to orovide a novel device of this character which will be simple in construction, handy and efficient in operation and comparatively in ex ensive to manufacture.
n describing'the invention in detail referones will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specihcation where in like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views and in Which- Figure 1 is a plan; Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are sections on lines 2-2, 3-3 and 44 of Fig. 1, respectively; and Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view illustrating a detail hereinafter referred to.
In the drawings 1- denotes a base-plate adapted to be suitably clamped to the table of a sewing machine, preferably against the lower face thereof. Suitably fastened-to the top of the base-plate 1 near its ends and extendin part way across it are the side-boards 2 which project downwardly beyond the forwardedge of the basc-plate 1. lnterposcd between the side-boards 2 at the rearthercoi'- is the transverse board or back-plate 3 arranged at right angles to the baselate 1. This back-plate 3 is provided with a ongitudinal slot 4 through which the work may pass. Fastened to the outer faces of the side-boards 2 are the inclined arms 5 parallel to each other andconnected at their lower ends by the transverse guide-board 6 formed with a slot 6 to permit the passage of the fabric. The arms 5 are also connected by the transverse guide-board 7 having a slot 8, through which the fabric may pass. A third guide-board. 9, having a slot 10 for the goods, is secured to the side-boards2 and is so positioned as to have its lower ed e in contact with the forward edge of the base-plate 1. The guide-boards 7, .9, are parallel to each other, while the boards 9, 3 are inclined at an acute angle each to the other. The side boards 2 are further connected b the crossbar 11 and the arms 5 are united y a similar cross-bar 12.
Slidably mounted on the bars 11', 12 are the gages 13 formed with openings 14 through which pass these bars. The gages 13 are further formed with the recesses 15 to receive the guide- boards 7, 9, the recesses -which receive the'guideboard 9 being enlarged, as shown-at 16, to permit frcc movement of the gages 13 (Fig. 2). The rear faces of the gages 13 abut against the back plate 3. By proper relative movement the gages can be adjusted for goods of different widths; and by moving the gages 13 with relation to the sitlc-boawls 2 the goods can be pro erly positioned with relation to the tucicr attachment (not shown). To hold the 13 in their adjusted position the clamp pins 17 carried by the gages 13 engage the bars 11, 12. I
Fastened to the outer face of each of the side boards 2 and extending rearwardly therefrom is an arm 18 provided with a slot 19, through which passes a clamp-screw 20. The latter forms a pivotal connection which permits the arms 18 to be swung out of the 2 ma or 1 the guide-bar 21. Between the 26 and one of the arms 18 is slidably mounted a see 0nd gage, 28,.whieh also straddles the guidebar 21 in a manner similar to the gage 26. The 28 is held. against lnoveinei'it by the binding pin 29 passing theretlu'ough and. engaging the gage-carrying rod 2.5 and is movable with relation to the 236 to Commodaie goods of different widths.
After the 26, 28 have been properly adjusted and it is desired to position the goods with relation to ihe tucker ai'baelr merit, it is only necessary to give the desired movement lo the rojeeting enal 3O the rod 25. When the goods have been hrougl i; into the desired position, the rod. is held! against movement by the binding; pin
To givothe proper attention to the mate rial, the latter may he passed from in front of the guide-hoard 7 through the slot Lheneo rearwariliy through. the slot 5 then over the top of the guide-boards and and through the slots 10, 4 and 22.
By placing the right-hand gage elose against the right-halal side-board thereby uncovering the slots 8, l0 and 4-, {the device may he used as a guide for a heitouier attach ment, the arms 18 being first thrown upwardly and rozuwar lly, explaiuml in. a eompanion application, Serial No. 442.088, filed July 6th, 1968.
I claim:
