Description

iinitd tatr LAOUI'S RINGLER., OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Letters .Patent No. 92,544, flatellgJuly 13, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN IRONINGfMACHIE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent land making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOIS RINGIER, ofthe city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invcnted a new and improved Ironing-Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and 'exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, fin-'ming part ot' this specification, in which- .Figure I represents an end elevation of' my improved ironing-machine.
Figure 2 is a side elevation, partly in section, of thc same. Y
Figure 3 is a detail side view, on an enlarged scale, of' thc seam-ironing attachment.
Figure 4 is a detail transverse section of the same, taken on the plane ofthe line :v-x, iig. 3.
-Shnilar letter-sofr reference indicate. corresponding parts.
This invention rela-tes to a new machine for ironing pantaloons and other garments, and for smoothing the sewed seams ofthe same.
lhe invention -consists in the application of two smoothing-tubes, of which one is made to revolve, while the other can be moved laterally in its slotted bearings. The garment to-be smoothed is placed bctween and over these tubes, and drawn or pulled forward, so that it will be smoothed as it rotates the up-V per tube. The tubes are heated by gas, steam; or otherwise. y v
.lhe invention consists, also, in the application of a ring to the lower tube, said ring carrying a projecting lug, by which the seams can be ironed, as hereinafter more fully described. f-
A, in the drawing, represents the fra-me of my improved ironi11g-machine.
B and (l are two horizontal tubes, supported on the frame. These tubes entera reservoir, D, which is supported on the frame A, or on a separate frame, and which receives a gas-pipe, u, or a steam or hot-water supply, or is otherwise heated. The heat created in this reservoir passes into the pipes or hollow cylinders I B U, and heats the same..
The upper cylinder, B, is hung loosely in its bear ings, so that it an easily revolve. The other cylinder,
l, cannot revolve, but has a lateral motion, its outer end, l), fitting through and moving in a horizontal slot of theframe A, so as to be placed diagonally to the direction of the cylinder B, although it will, by a suitable'spring, c, be held directly under B.
The swinging end ot' the pipe' C is, by means of a cord, d, which passes over pulleys h 7:, connected with a lever, F. -By pressing upon said lever, the pipe C will bc drawn 'to its diagonal position, as aforesaid.
The pantaloons or other article to be ironed is, when the pipe C is drawn to its diagonal position, placed between thc two pipes. ,lhc lever is released, and the spring cv will then draw the pipe under B, and the garment is bent over B, and drawn between the two cylinders. It will then cause B to roll, and will, by being in contact with both cylinders, be ironed on both sides.
A collar, e, is iitted aroimd the cylinder C, and is loose thereon, so as to be tmned in either direction. It has a projecting lug or ear, j, and can be locked in proper position by a set-screw, g. The collar is so adjusted that its lug is in a suitable posit-ion, and then the seam of the garment is placed over the lug, as indicated in iig. 4, and pulled through between the cyl-v inders. The seam will thereby be ironed, and the two flaps of cloth attened down.
Having thus described my invention, What I claimas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An ironing-machine, consisting of the hollow cylinders B (l, Ione revolving in a iixed position or bea1= ings, and the other having a lateral motion at one end in the slotted Trame, by means of a cord, d, lever E, and spring c,.substantially as herein shown and described, to opera-te as set forth.
2. lhe seam-ironing attachment, consisting of the collar @,'which has the projecting lug j', 'adjustable to a tixied position on the cylinder C, by means of the set-- screw g, substantially as herein shown and described, to operate as setlbrth.
