s invention is intended, more especially, for use in connection with cans, like blackin cans, which comprise a body tion an a cap or cover intended to be held thereon by friction, although the invention is adapted for use in connection with caps for bottles or other receptacles.

In cans of the style in question great difiiculty is often experienced in removingthe cap or cover, which frequently must be pried from the can, thereby necessitating the use of some kind of-a tool or implement and at the same time tending to injure or destroy the cover or the body of the can. In certain prior constructions an opening device, inserted between the cap andbody of the can has been employed, but such mechanism is objectionable for the reason that the cover must either be especially formed to receive such an opening device or a space must be left, after the cover has been inserted, thereby unsatisfactory sealing of the can.

The present invention is intended to obvicounty of Cook and State of etc the objections above noted and at the same time provide an easy and efiicient means for pryingthe cover from the can no matter how tightly it.- may be inserted thereon.

Another object of the'invention is to obviate the necessity for the use of bolts, rivets, or other att-aching'means for securing the opening device in operative position, there by providing an unpunctured can the cover of which may be applied without interference from the opening device.

The invention. consists in the features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, the opening decan having a body section 8 and a cover 9 slipped over the rim or edge of the body section and adapted to abut against the bead or flange l0 outwardly pressed from the body section. The rim of the cover is provided at a suitable point with an upturned lip 11 having a curved end cut on a circle having the adjacent end 13 of a slot 14: asa radius. The slot is cut in the bend or angle of the upturned lip 11, which lip is formed integrally with the edge of the rim with which it is connected.

The slotted lip serves as a socket for a key 15 which is entered through the slot and curved on its end 16, said curvature being such as will enable the key to swing within the slot withoutainming or binding. Adjacent to the curved key, is an outwardly projecting flange 17 which extends back from the curved end of the key for a distance substantially equal to the length of the slot, which brings the inner end of the flange into abutment with the end 3 of the slot l2-and brings the outer end of a position where it will engage the flange or bead IO when the turned into the position shown in Fig. 2. The key is preferablycurved. to register with the curvature of the rim of the cover, and is of a length to extend beyond the curved end 12 of the lip .11 for a considerable distance. The construction of Fig. 7 is intended, more particularly, for use in connection with paint or other cans having covers fitting thereto with extreme tightness, which covers can best be pried up by employing a key member which serves to simultaneously exert a prying action on both sides of the cap or cover.

This construction is objectionable in that the handle is liable to become broken or twisted when in use in removing'tight-ly fit- The present construction obviates this dittioulty in thatthe strain on the key is substantially all in a direct line with its vertical dimension so that it is not subjected to a twisting or torsional strain, which would tend tobreak it. At the same time the arrangement is one which brings the key into close proximity to the rim'of the cover 'turned lip on the first mentioned member and obviates the necessity for providing a handle which outwardly projects from the cover to an objectionable. degree. g

What I claim as new and desire tosecure. by Letters Patent is:

1. A receptacle, comprising, a-body por tion and a cover, one of the members having a rim adaptedto slip over the end of the other member, a reversely turned'lip secured to the rim and provided with a slotat its bend or angle, an abutment on the other member, a key lying intermediate the lip and the adjacent wall of'the member towhich it is attached, and provided with an end adapted to be swung through the slot to engage the abutment, and-a handle'portion connected to the end of the key opposite to that which engages, the slot, substantially as described. t

2. A receptacle, comprisinga body portion and a cover, one of the members having a rim adapted to slip over the endof the other member, a reversely turned lip secured tothe rim and provided with a slot at its bend or angle, an abutment on the other member, a key lying intermediate the lip and the adjacent'wall of the member tofwhich it is.attached, and provided with an end adapted to be swung througlr the slot to engage the abutment, a handle portion connected to the end of the key oppositeto that which engages the slot, and a tongue adapted to ride over the end of the lip, substantially as described.
