SEALING-CAP FOR BOTTLES.
I cation.
The present extensively employed cap for bottles consists of a cork disk within a soft metal cap, which has an annular corrugated flange adapted to embrace a shoulder on the neck of a bottle. In applying this cap to a bottle, it is customary to press a conical hood against the .cap to force the inner corrugations into firm locking engagement with the shoulder on the neck of the bottle, and also to firmly embed the lip of the neck in the cork disk within said cap. Many devices are employed to remove the cap, the most common being a lever adapted to engage the lower edge of the annular flange. and fulcrumed on the top of the cap. These bottle opening devices, though simple, entail considerable expense on account of the large number required, and much inconvenience often results when they are lost or misplaced.
The object of my invention is to provide on a bottle cap of. this kind, a sheet metal thumb piece, integral with the cap, adapted to normally lie close to the periphery of the cap so as to avoid interference with the operation of ordinary sealing devices, said thumb piece being also adapted to be bent slightly outward from the cap when it is applied to a bottle, after which it may be easily grasped and bent to form a lever sufficiently rigid to remove the cap from the bottle.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved sealing cap, the parts thereof being in normal osition, before application to the bottle; Fig. 2 1s a central sectional viewthereof; Fig. 3 is a similar view, showing the cap as applied to the mouth of a bottle; and Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a cap and illustrates in perspective the thumb iece bent to form a detaching lever for said cap.
Referring to the drawings, 1 have used the reference numeral 10 to indicate the top of my improved cap, and 11 the annular sealing flange thereon. This flange is corrugated para el to the axis of the cap, the nner folds of the corrugations being desig- Specification of Letters Patent.

nated by the numeral 12, and the outer folds by the numeral "13. My opener A, formed integral with the flange 11, is normally folded against the periphery of said ca (Figs. 1 and 2). Said opener consists o a body 14 having wings 15 at the sides thereof. These wings are offset at 16 where they join the body 14 to provide definite lines-of-fold upon which said wings may be turned and the tips 17 of the wings are curved inward and rest between outer folds 13 of the cap.
At the top of the body.14 is. formed a small 1 projection 14 which in normal position fits snugly against the top of the cap. It will be seen that the thumb piece in this position conforms closely with the contour of the cap and is, therefore, adapted to use in the standard bottle sealing devices, which employ conical hoods to press the sealing caps upon bottle shoulders. When my improved cap is applied to the mouth of a bottle, the thumb piece A is bent slightly out-- ward by the conical hood- (Fig. 3) and the projection 14 on the body 14 can then be easily grasped preparatory to bending the thumb piece into the form of a detaching lever. To remove the cap, said projection .is caught by the user and the thumb piece bent outward until. the body 14: is substantially at right-angles to the flange 11. The wings 15 are then bent back on the lines-offold 16, the inner edges thereof resting against the peripher of the cap, thus reinforcing the body 14- Fig. 4:) Upward pressure exerted, against the now rigid body 14: causes the lateral distortion of the annular sealing flange 11 and a wrenching force against the cap which results in releasing the inner corrugations 12 from looking engagement with the shoulder 19 of the bottle and in removing the cap from the bottle.
My opener may be made a part of the cap at slight expense and does not form an objectionable projection either before, during,
bottle.
Having described my invention, what 1 i claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is:
1. A. metallic sealing cap having a flange adapted to be bent into locking contact with a bottle head, and an opener integral with the cap and normally resting in close contact with the periphery thereof,'said opener consisting of a body adapted to be bent outward from the flange, and reinforcing wings on the body designed to be bent substantially at right-angles thereto and to bear against .the cap.
' 2. A metallic sealing cap having a flange adapted to be bent into locking contact with a bottle head, and an opener integral with the flange and normally folded in close contact against the periphery thereof, said opener being adapted to be initially bent outward by the ordinary bottle sealing device and also adapted to be further bent by the fingers to form a rigid detaching lever.
3. A cap for bottles comprising a metal top having an annular corrugated sealing flange, and an opener, integral therewith, consisting of a sheet metal body having an inturned projection thereon and wings with inturned tips, said opener being adapted when in normal position to lie close against the periphery of the flange, said projection resting against the top of the cap and the tips lying between outer folds in the corrugatedflange, the body of said opener being adapted to be bent substantially at rightangles to said annular flange while the wings are turned with their rear edges against said flange to form a reinforcement for said body.
4. A metallic sealing cap having a flange adapted to be bent into locking contact with a bottle head and an opener integral there-' with consisting of a sheet metal body hav- 1ng wings and a curved projection thereon,
said opener being adapted when in normal position to lie. close against the periphery of the flange with said projection resting against the top of the cap, said body being adapted to be bent slightly outward by the ordinary bottle sealing device and. also adapted to be further bent by the fingers to a position substantially at right-angles to said annular flange, while the wings are turned up with their rear edges against said 1Llzlalige to form a reinforcement for said 5. A metallic sealing can having a flange adapted to be bent into locking contact with a bottle head and an opener integral therewith consisting of a sheet metal body having wings with curved tips thereon, said opener being adapted when in normal position toi lie close against the periphery of the flange with said curved tips resting between the outer folds of said flange, said body being adapted to be bent slightly outward by the ordinary bottle sealing device and also adapted to be further bentby the fingers to a position substantially at right-angles to said annular flange, while the wings are turned up with their rear edges against said flange to form a reinforcement for said body.
Whereof, l have hereunto subscribed my name to this specification.
