Application filed November 15, 1907. Serial N0. 402,318.
B0 it known tbat I, JAMES l\ 1. TIBBS, a citizon 0f the United Status, ro. i1ing a1: Haznl Green, in the uuunty 0l' Wolfs and Stute of Kentucky, have invcnted a new and usolul Lubricating; Duvice und 1 d0 hereby declare the following t0 be a full, clear, and exact descriptiun ol oho invuntion, such as will enable others skilled in the art 130 which it a 3perains 130 make und use the same.
'.l 1s invention mrtains o0 a new and useful automatic lu ricating device adapted for use up0n vehicle axlcs und wheels; and the invention in is broadest aspect, aims as. its essential object o0 provide a simple, elllcient and durable devicu, 0f this character which is applicabla t0 the front 01 rear axle 0'f any make 0f vehicle.
'lhe invention is directed n1oro particularly t0 the simple and inexpensive constructi0n, comprising a tw0 part casing, in which an oscillatory valve is mounted, by which the flow 0f lubricant from the c'ontaimwr above the casing is regulated; this casing is fixed within a recoss 0f the bnlster 0f the axle, by means 0l" screws, and is provided with an 0il chute 01 duct, which 1s seated within a channel 0f the spindle 0f the axla, and parallel therewith; this 011 chute 01 duct 1s rovidecl f01 the purpose 0f conveying the ubricant 110 the bore 0f the hub 0f a wheel.
This invention 00m rises further objects and combinations 01 e ements which Will be hereinafter Inore fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and the nova1 features theraof will be pointed out in 13110 ap gended claims.
0 obtain a full and correct umlorsanding of ehe details of construction, combinations of features, elements and advantages, reference is to be had to tho hereinafter sct forth description und the accompanying drawings in connection therewith, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective viewillustrating the application of the lubricatin device upon the bolster and axle 0f a vehic e. Fig. 2 is a sectional view vertically through the lubrieating device and the bolster of the axle, looking upon the longitudinal side 0f th@ axle and bolster. Fig. 3 is a sectional view 011 line 33 0f Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view 0l the oscillatory valve. F}ig. 5 is a view showing the parts disasse,mb ed.
In regard to the accompanying drawings,
wheroin similar reference characters indi cate corresponding arts in the several illus trations, l y figures, 1 designatvs an axlu, from Which the s )lll(ll 2 p1ojects, whicl1 is provided with a ul1annel 3, to reuoive the oil ahnte 0r duct 4 which is providod With threads 5 for engagemant with tlxe casing 6, as at 7, which casing consists 0f twu 1nembers 8 and 9, which havo threaducl connuc tions witl1 0ne another, as a1; 10, as clearly disclosed in tl1e drawings. The oil ahnte 01 dual; 4 is provided Wi1;h an 0rifice 31, as clearly shown.
The axle, as shown, is provided with tl1e usual bolster 11, whicl1 is provided with a semicircular recess 12, in which the casing is seatecl, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3; the casing is rov1ded with ears 13 and 14, through Whicll the screws 15 pass, and by which tl1e casing is securely fastenecl t0 th0 bolster, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
Projecting f10111 the inne1 face 0f the membar 8 is a stud 16 up0n which the oscillaton semicircular valve 17 is mounted, througl1 the passage 18 0f whieh valve the lubricant from the Container 19 passes, that is, when the opening 20 0f the valve is in registraoion with the lower portion 0f the container, as will be clearly manifest.
The container is provided with a hinged closure 21, which is provided with a spring catch 22, adapted f0r en agement with a lug 23, so as t0 securely ho d the closure from 0 ening by the vibration of the axle, through t 0 action 0f the wheels of the vehicle up0n tl1e surfaco 0f tl1e ground; this container is fastend to ohe casing by means 0f tlneads 24, as at 25, as clearl disclosed in Fig. 2.
Projecting from t e valve is a lug 26, which extends thruugh an opening 27 0f the member 9, as shown; which lu 26 is providm]. Wihh an extension 28, w 11011 is rectangular in moss sentio:n t0 1event tlxe valve regulating mcmber 29, W1icl1 is mounted thereon, from displacament relative 130 the valve, as will be readily observed. T0 prevent the valve regulating n1ember from being dis laced outward a nut 30 is threaded upon t e threaded end 0f said extension, as at 41, as clearly shown.
The valve regulating member is provided with a finger piece 32 and an arm 33, which arm radiates 0 positely from the finger piece, as clearly s own; this arm is providecl with an inwardly projecting pmtion 34,
which is pruvided With a spherical shaped ing, and nwans lur manipulating the valve,
me1nber 35 dusigned fm engagenxent with a plurality of depxcssiuns. 36, which a10 a1- ranged in a sexnicirvular form, as will l e aparcnt frorn the drawings. lt, will he read- 1ly manifest, that by the n1ani ulation of the valvu regulating 1nemher t 10 flnw of lubricant f1'nln tlm untainer ma x' lm regulated.
The opaning 27 of thu rno1nho1 E), the (lusure 21, and the threadud cnnjunctiun uf tho membe1s 9 and 10, am providud with suiizable packing 37, so as tu pmvido llnid-tight joints. The apparatus is fn1ther prnvidod. with packing, as ab 38, t0 also provide fluidtight joints.
The features an(l combinations of elements and the arrangement thereuf, f01' accomplishing tho objec'ts 0f Ehe devicc may hc changecl and varied, that is to say, in a natical application of the apparabus, wit 1 an understanding that the said changos and variations accruing from sai(l applicatiun are limite(l witfhin the scope of the appcndod claims.
Fron1 the foregoing, the essential features, elements and the 0 eration 0f the dcvice, together with the snnplicity t'heleof, will he olearly apparent.
Havin thus fully described the invention, what is eIaimed by the pr0tection 0l Letters Patent, is:
