CHARLES H. CURFEW AND CHARLES H. CARPENTER, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
BOBBIN-HOLDER.
Application led February To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that We, CHARLES Il. CURFEW and CHARLES H. CARPENTER, citizens of the United States, residing at the city of .Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bobbin-lloiders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to bobbin holders, and has for its object to provide a device of this` character that is adapted to receive, grip and drive a bobbin by means of clips or resilient fingers. It is found in the practical operation of devices of this character very essential to provide simple and effective ine-.ins whereby the holder containing the bobbin may be easily arrested by the pressure of the hand so that the bobbin may be dotl'cd quickly.
tecting the hand of the operator against injury when he grasps the holder to stop the bobbin.
)in essential feature of this invention is that a cupesliaped member is provided having a whirl adapted to receive a band or belt by which the same is driven. The i11 terior of this cup member is provided with a pluralityr of resilient gripping lingers, the same being surrounded and protected by the broad rim or collar of the cup-member, which serves a double purpose, first, to provide convenient and ample means for grasping the holder with the hand for the purpose of quickly stoi'iping the bobbin, and second, to afford perfect protection to the hand against coming in contact with the resilient gripping lingers or other projections, which are otherwise practically certain, as has been proven in practice, to tear or injure the hand of the operator in attempting to stop the holder.
Another feature of our improved device is that the cup member may be struck up out of sheet stock and drawn up into the desired form and the resilient fingers punched up or raised from the stock thereby forming a holder Which is extremely light in Weight and at the same time reducing the cost of construction to the minimum.
lith these and other objects in vieiv, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as Will be more fully de- Specificaton o1' Letters Patent.
17, 1908. Serial No. 416,183.
The principal objection to l devices of this character now on the market is that no provision has been made for pro- Patented June 15, 1909.
' scribed and particularly pointed ont in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure is a side elevation showing one form of holding device in section, with a bobbin in position thereon. Fig. Q-Ais a plan View showing the cup-shaped member containing a plurality of resilient lingers, said fingers being integral therewith and raised from the bottom portion of said cup. Fig. is a sectional side elevation showing a form of cup which is struck up out of sheet metal having a plurality of fingers formed integral therewith, the same being raised from the bottom portion of the cup member, said cup member also having an elongated neck portion formfing a whirl, the same being prefe ably formed integral with said cup portion. F ig. fIm-is a sectional side elevation showing an other' form of cup-portion struck up out of sheet metal and the whirl portion formed separate therefrom and connected to said cup portion by swaging or any other convenient means.
At l is the cup-shaped member havin a broad upwardly extending flange or colar portion :2. On the inside of this collar portion, sce Fig. I, is located a plurality of resilient fingers 3 .scoured to the. same by means of the rivetsl 4. Connected to the bottom side of this cup-mcmber is a downwardly extending portion 5 forming a pulley or whirl for the purpose of receiving the driving band. A. long piece of tubing I3 is forced tightly into this Whirl portion, the same being adapted to receive the bobbin 7 which is adapted to slide down over the same into position in the cup.
Another featuri` of this invention is that the cup-membcr may be struck up out of sheet stock forming the broad rim or collar Q by which the same may bc grasped by the hand of the operator to quickly stop the bobbin. It is found advantageous in this const ruetion to form the lingers 8 --8 integral with the cup-member by punching the same upward from the bottom thereof into the position shown in Fig. 3 thereby again reducingl the expense of construction. The Whirl or neck portion 9 in this particular con- .struction may also be formed integral with the cupnnembcr, if desired, the bottom end of the same being swaged out as at 10 to form a Hange to retain the lower edge of the belt. The tube may be also forced through this neck portion as in the previously described eonstruetion and extend a short distance below`y to torni an end hearA ing- 011 which the saine may` turn.
The modification illustrated in Fi". l shows the eup-nieniher E) as formed hy being drawn up from sheet .stoehy hut having a separate and independent whirl nieniher l1 eonneeted thereto at 1B, which naryr he done hy 'fort-ing, pinningr` ,swaging or anyY other onitahle means for positively connecting the two members together.
Uur ilnproved deriee Jf'or reeeiving and retaining a hohhin is extremely .simple and praetiral in its construction and etlieient in its operation and lrv its use the hohhin may be stopped almost instantly hy the operator hy a slight pressure of the hand thereon` when by a tluiek motion, the hohhiu is inatantl)t released t'roni the gripping springs and reinoved from the holder and may he as tpiirkly replaced and eonneeted thereto. Then again. owing to the t'aet that all oi' the eorners. ends and edges on the device are on the inside of this eup nlelnher. whieh entirely surrounds, int-loses and protects the Haine. there is no rhanee for the varn to heeonie raught or entangled in dotiing as frequently happens' in operating with the old construetion of hohhin holder. This means ot' fastelling is very inexpensiver in its` eonstruetion. and praetiealtv ilnlestruetihle.
l'laring thus deserihed our invention. what we elaiin as new and desire to seenre hy Letters Patent. is:
1. A bohbin holder eoniprising a enpt ,shaped member. a plurality ot' upwardly extending resilient hohhin engaging lingers within said eup, the lower portion of said lingers heilig eonneeted to said enp, the walls o't Isaid eup being' arranged to inelose and proteet said lingers and the outer surface ot said eup heing arranged to t'orin a tirietion hand or eolla r to he engaged Yfor the purpose, of stopping the hohhin` and a whirl oo nneeted to said eup nieniher by which the hobhin is rotated.
2. A hohhin holder eoniprising a euptneinher strut-lt np out oi" sheet stoek2 the walls ot whirl] torni a broad inelosing collar or hand, a plurality of resilient lingers or elips pnnehed up from the hottoin ot" said wup and t'ornied integral with said eup nienther. .said elipa heing adapted to ret'eive and grip the lohbin.
it, A holihin holder eoinprising a eupineinher sti-urli up out ol'I sheet storli', the walls o't whirh iorln a luoad inelosing collar or hand. a pluralityY ot' resilient tingers or rlips punehed up troni the hottoni ot said rap and formed integral with said rap nientY her` said elips heing adapted to rereive and grip the hohhin` and a whirl ronneeted to i said eup-ineniher through whit-h said hohhin ia rotated.
