PACKING DEVICE FOR PISTONS,

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN JONEs and Jesse Rice, subjects of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and'residents oi Littleborough and Rochdale, respectively, both in the county of Lancaster, England, consulting engineer and engineer and maker, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing Devices for Pistons, Piston-Valves, and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improved means for enabling the pistons of steam or other engines, pumps and the like, to be kept steam or liquirbtight in the cylinders or barrels in which they work, the invention being equally applicable to piston valves and, in fact, to pistons of any kind.
It refers to that class of device chiefly consisting of inner and outer ringsegmentsbearing against each other as a result of pressure the object being to provide an improvedarrangement of spring device for usein conjunction with the inner segments.
In the hereinbel'ore mentioned application for Letters Patent filed by us we described a combination of separated inner segment rings operating in conjunction with outer segment rings or packing ringsha-ving tenon joints, certain spring devices and screws being employed in connection with such to l'orni the complete packing arrangement.
Our invention particularly-relates to this class of device and will be fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which,

In the foregoingdrawings similar letters indicate corresponding parts and from these it will be seen that-our invention consists in providing each end of the inner segment rings a with suitable slideways I). outstanding projection or projections, preferably of a parallel character, though, in end elevation, the sides c of the channel or the projection or projections may converge so as to present a wedge-shaped groove or a wedgeshapedprojection or projections. in conjunction with slide-ways or projections so formed we employ spring pressure devices adapted to be easily slid 'nto and out of posi tion between the ends of the segments, such devices consisting of brackets (1 adapted to iit one within the other with their ends 6 formed to fit in or on the slideways or projections formed in the segments.
The parts of the bracket which slide one within the other preferably consist of two ternal diameter corresponding to the diameter of those on the other bracket. The tubes on the latter may, however, be replaced by solid pins of the same external Mounted on the external or larger tubes, of which there are two pairs in connection with each pressure device and in large pistons sometimesniore' than two, are spiral springs 9 adapted to exert pressure endwise sons to force the brackets d against the segments and thereby put pressure onthe outer ring or packing segments h which come directly in contact with the cylinder wall in which the piston works. By employing two or more sets of springs between each of the inner segment joints, equalpressure is given to the packing ring-silt, transversely oi them, so as to keep them in perfect alinement with the cylinder wall.

In Figs. 6 to 8 a modification of the same idea is illustrated. faces of each pair of segments where they join together are formed flat at 0 and against this flat surface is secured a bracket 1), a stud or bolt 9 being employed for the purpose, such stud being passed through the end of one of the oining segments only. One end of the bracket 1) has a slidable lit in a groove 7* formed in the segment while 'the other end of the bracket has formed in it a groove or slideway b or is provided with a projection of a similar character to those already described. The spring devices employed in connection with this form. of packmg are exactly thesame as those previously place of the plate at shown in Fig. 4.

Further the inner segments in all cases may be of channel in transverse section so that the connecting Web or side which presses against the inner surface of the outer segments or against the cylinder wall may be made thinner, while strength is retained by the webs.

What we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1 The combination, with piston segments provided with sockets on their adjacent end portions, of telescopic guides provided with brackets at their ends which are slidable in which is capable of j the said sockets, and springs encircling the said guides and pressing the said brackets apart. i
2. The combination, with piston segments 1 provided with sockets on their adjacentend i portions, of telescopic guides provided with brackets at their ends which are slidable in the said sockets, plates overlapping the joints of the said segments and bearing against each pair of brackets, and springs encircling the said guides and pressing the said ,I brackets apart.
