To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM STRATHMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore City and State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to preserving cans of the type embodying a removable cap, and has for its objects to provide a simple, inex pensive device of this character in which the cap may be effectually closed and sealed, one wherein the sealing member or strip may be readily applied in the sealing operation or conveniently removed to permit opening of the can, and one wherein the strip, cap and top of the can will, when the parts are asselmbled, present a smooth, unbroken surface p ane.
With these and other objects in view, the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a can equipped with a cap and sealing member embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the sealing member partially removed. Fig. 3 is a detail, sectional view vertically through the upper portion of the can. Fig. 4 is a ottom plan view of the cap. Fig. 5 is a detail section in line with the depressed recess therein.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the body of the can having a head 2 provided with a central opening 3 bounded y a depressed ledge or flange 4 disposed in a plane elow that of the head 2, thus forming a recess for the reception of the cap or closure 5 in turn provided with a depressed, marginal flange 6 adapted to rest upon the flange 4 and to form in conjunction therewith an annular recess 7 for the reception of a sealing member or strip 8 adapted to be secured in place by solder or other metal cement.
The strip 8, which is composed of wire or sheet metal and of annular form to conform to the recess 7, is provided at one end with an integral, transversely projecting, substantially T-shaped portion or hand piece 9 which, when the strip is in applied position, seats within a T-shaped recess or depression 10 formed in the cap 5, it being noted in this connection that the recesses 7 and 10 are of a depth corresponding to the thickness of the strip 8 and hand piece 9, whereby, when the member 8 is fitted for sealing the cap in place, the parts will present a smooth, unbroken surface.
After the can has been filled the cap is applied for closing the opening 3 and secured y means of the strip 8 which is soldered along its marginal edges to the head 2 and cap respectively. To open the can the hand piece 9 is pried out of the recess l0 and thereafter grasped by the operator to be employed for tearing the strip 8 out of the recess 7, it being obvious that as soon as the sealing strip is completely removed the cap can be readily lifted to open the can. The recess 10 is in practice, made larger than the handle 9 to facilitate the raising of said handle out of the recess. Itis to be noted that owing to the provision of the overlapping flanges 4 and upon the can and cap a tight joint will, upon the application of the strip 8, be formed between the arts, thus insuring an effectual sealing of t e can.
From the foregoing it is apparent that I produce a comparatively simple, inexpensive device admirably adapted for the attainment of the ends in view, it being understood that in attaining these ends minor changes in the details herein set forth may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A can having a head provided with an opening and a depressed flange bounding said opening, a cap adapted to close the opening and having a depressed marginal flange to seat upon and overlap the first named flange and presenting a recess extending marginally around the cap, and a sealing strip adapted to be cemented in the recess, said strip being provided with an integral hand piece and the cap having a depression in which the hand piece is contained.
