Description

G. BENSON.
BELT OILING DEVICE APPLIOAIIOLI FILED JUNE 26,1907.
Patented June 8, 1909.
M W S? pr snn CHARLES BENSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BELT-OILING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. June 8, 1909.
Application filed June 26, 1907. Serial No. 380,974.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES BENsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinols, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Belt Oiling Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to belt lubrioators, and its object is to provide a simple, practical and eiiective form of belt lubricator in which the oil or other lubricating medium will be evenly distributed upon the belt without undue waste.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of a belt lubricator embodying my present invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same; Fig. 3 is a detail of construction.
The lubricator shown comprises a case or box 1 formed with an oil chamber 2 in its upper part, into which chamber the oil or other lubricating medium for lubricating the belt is to be placed. A rotary member 3 is extended longitudinally through the lower portion of the case or box 1 and one of its projecting ends 4 is provided with a rotary wheel 5 which is adapted to rest and run upon the belt 6 to be lubricated. The rotary member 3 is conveniently in the form of a cylinder or shaft and is provided with a series of cups 7 7 located at intervals lengthwise of said member.
The box 1 is provided with a series of ducts or passages 8, 8 leading down from the chamber 2 and terminating above the recesses 7, 7 in the member 3. A floor 9 is provided for said chamber 2 and has passages 10, 10 registering with the passages 8, 8, and a cut-off slide 11 is located between the floor 9 and the upper part of the bottom of the box 1. Thus the oil will pass from the chamber 2 downwardly through the passages 10, 10 and 8, 8, and will be controlled to permit more or less of it to flow by the slide 11. The slide 11 is shifted by a spindle 11 having a pinion 11 meshing with a rack 11 on said slide. On reaching the bottom of the passages 8, 8 the oil will drip upon the rotary member 3 and will enter the cups 7, 7 thereof as the member rotates.
The bottom of the case 1 is provided with outlet passages 12, 12 which extend down from the rotary member 3 to the bottom of the case 1 and thereby permit oil received and carried by the rotary member 3 to pass out of the box 1 and drip upon the belt 6. Thus it will be seen that as the wheel 5 rotates, the oil will be carried around by the member 3 and thus it will be evenly distributed so that it'will drip upon the belt evenly and also there will be more or less oil fed from the box according as the belt travels faster or slower, because the rotary member 3 will be turned at greater or less speed, thereby carrying more or less oil.
The lubricator can be suspended in any desired way above the belt, as for example by the strips 14 and 15, and adjustable nut 16 as shown in Fig. 1.
It will be understood that changes and modifications can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim is 1. A belt lubricator, comprising a box or case having an oil chamber, lubricating passages leading down from the bottom of said chamber, a rotary member interposed in said passages for distributing the lubricant, and a wheel at the end of said rotary member arranged to be driven by the belt.
2. A belt lubricator, comprising a box or case having an oil chamber, a rotary member adapted to be driven by the belt to be lubricated and acting to distribute the oil to said belt, said box or chamber having passages leading from said oil chamber to said rotary member, and also passages forming an outlet from said rotary member, and means for regulating the amount of oil fed from the oil chamber to the rotary member.
3. A belt lubricator comprising a box having an oil chamber and also having passages leading'downwardly from said oil chamber, a slide controlling said passages means for moving said slide, a rotary member provided with recesses or cups and located at the lower ends of said passages, said rotary member being provided with a wheel adapted to travel on the belt to be lubricated, and outlet passages leading from said rotary member and and provided with recesses corresponding adapted to distribute the lubricant to the with the same;
belt. In Witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe 4. A lubricating device comprising a box my name this 18th day of June A. D., 1007.
or case having an oil chamber, passages lead- CHARLES BEN SON.
ing from said chamber to the exterior of the Witnesses: case, a slide controlling said passages, and a H. A. MELUM, rotary member interposed in the passages J. R. ADAMS.
