Description

.. J'. GORDON, GREENVILLE, MICHIGAN.
Leers Para: No. 92,440, am July 13, `11569.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLASTER-SOWER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all 'whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, E. J. GORDON, of Greenville, in the county of Montcalm, and `in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ilaster-Sowers; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figurc l is a plan view of the sower;
Figure 2 is a side elevation; and
Figure 3 is a vertical crosssection of the hopper and feeding-devices, on the line a: :1; of fig. 1.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The nature of my invention consists in the general construction and arrangement of the sowing-mechanism, and the devices by which it is actuated, and in the combination therewith of rollers, as is hereinafter fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing` A represents the side-pieces of the frame, connected together by mea-ns of suitable cross-pieces, B B.
Said frame is supported by two rollers, C O, which are pivoted upon a shaft, c, passing laterally through the side-pieces, and through the tongue D, which is extended backward, and is securedl to the front and rear cross-pieces.
Resting upon the rear end of the frame is a hopper, E, containing the plaster, having one-half of its bottom, c, movable, and rendered adjustable, to or from the other half, by means of two diagonal slots, x x', working over pins secured to said box, so that when said bottom is moved laterally, it also receives a motion in aline with the draught, and opens or closes the space for the-escape of plaster from the hopper.
Working in suitable guides immediately above the stationary portion of said bottom, is a bar, F, having a series of teeth, ff, Src., projecting over the opening in said bottom.
One end of said bar extends through the end ofthe hopper, and is pivoted to the end of alever, G, which is, in turn, pivoted, near its centre, to one of the sidepieces A, so as to bring its forward end upon aline with the shaft c.
A corrugated ring, H, is secured to and revolves with thc roller, and communicates a vibratory motion to said lever, (which is pressed against said ring by means of a spring,'g,) and, through said lever, to the bar F, bymeans of which the contents of the hopper are so thoroughly agitated as to prevent the plaster from becoming lodged.
' In order that the false bottom may be opened or closed, and the lever G thrown out of contact with the ring H, when desired, another lever, I, is pivoted, at its front end, to the frame, and, extending to the rear, is pivoted, or otherwise secured, to the adjustable bottom, e, so as to have a lateral movement.
The pin, by means of which the bar f and lever G are connected together, extends downward, so as to come in contact with the lever I, when said lever is pressed inward, by means of which the rear end'of said lever-G is carried inward, so as to remove its outer end from contact with the ring H at the same time that the adjustable-bottom is closed.
' A suitable stop is provided, for locking the lever I when adjusted.
The operation of this device will be easily understood:
The hopper being supplied with plaster, and the machine iii-position for commencing its distribution, the lever I is moved outward, so as to open the bottom of the hopper, and, at the same time, throw the lever G in contact with the ring H, and the machine driven forward. Ihe plaster, being agitated by the vibrating bar and teeth, falls evenly, through the opening, upon the ground, which has been prepared by the passage of the rollers.
This devicevis believed to be the most simple, eiective, and durable of any in use for a like purpose, and can be furnished at a smaller cost.
. Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The withindescribed .combined roller and plastersower, consisting of the rollers C G, supporting the frame A A and B B, the hopper E, with its adjustable bottom, c, the vibrating bar F, levers G and I, and corrugated ring H, all constructed and arranged to' operate substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this day of May, 1869.
' E. J. GORDON.
