SAMUEL B. GOFF, OF CAMDEN, NEW JERSEY.
DEVICE FOR AFFIX ING LABELS T0 BOTTLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 8, 1909.
Application filed March. 1c, 1908. Serial No. 421,4e4.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, SAMUEL B. Grow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Camden, in the county of Camden, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Device for Afiixing Labels to- Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a device for afixing labels to bottles embodying means for coating the bottles with adhesive material, and a label support, whereby the bottle as coated may be presented to the top label as presented causing the latter to adhere to the bottle and admitting of its removal from said support, the means employed and the operation of the same being hereinafter described and the novel features pointed out in the claims.
For the purpose of explaining my invention, the accompanying drawing illustrates a satisfactory reduction of the same to practice, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific arrangement and organization shown and described.
Figure 1 represents a top or plan View of a device for affixing labels to bottles embodying the invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal vertical section on line wr, Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 represents a transverse vertical section on line yy, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 represents a longitudinal vertical section on line zz, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings :A designates a table or stand, on whose top B is supported the funnel C, which is adapted to receive adhesive material and has its lower end communicating with a conduit D, which is connected with said top and has a foraminous cover E, on which is sustained by the frame E the pad or piece F of sponge or other absorbent material, whereby the material supplied to the funnel 0 passes through said conduit and cover, and so saturates said pad that some of the material exudes on the upper side of the same. In the top B at the side of the piece F, is a recess G, which is adapted to receive a bottle to be labeled, it being noticed that there is suspended from said top below said recess the label-receiving casing or box H, in which latter is a follower J, on which labels in a pack are directly supported, said follower being pressed upwardly by the springs K, which are rested on the bottom L of said box, whereby as the labels are successively removed, the follower is caused to rise, and so place the top label above the base of the recess G, the upper labels occupying a downwardly-movable rim M, which is connected with the springs or spring-plates N, whose lower ends are secured to the exterior of said box.
The operation is as follows :A bottle is placed sidewise on the pad F, whereby it is coated with adhesive material therefrom. Then the bottle is inserted, adhesive-side down, into the recess G and rested on the rim M, after which the bottle is depressed, whereby the rim M moves somewhat downwardly, and the top label is engaged by the bottle, causing it to adhere thereto. Then the bottle is lifted, when, owing to the springs N, the rim returns to its normal position, when the operation of coating the bottle and presenting it to said top label may be repeated.
The rim M comprises a frame comparatively of the shape of the labels, it being open at the top and bottom and normally held elevated above the top of the box H by the springs N as its carrier, it being noticed that when said rim is depressed by the bottle thereon, the springs, in the present case, bow or bend outwardly as shown in dotted lines, their upper portions being permitted to have lateral play in openings in the flange P that connects the boX H With the top of the table.
In order to lower or otherwise 0 erate the follower J from the exterior of the ox H, the sides of the latter have openings Q vertically therein, and said follower is lengthened as at J, J so as to extend through said openings so as to have vertical play therein, the extension J 2 serving as a handle and both extensions acting as guides for the follower in its rising and lowering motions.
While I have described the deviceas employed for affixing labels to bottles, it may be em loyed for a similarpurpose on other receptac es or vessels.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device for affixing labels to vessels, a pasting device, a label receptacle, a support common to both, a downwardly movable rim at the top of said receptacle, and a resilient carrier for said rim composed of spring plates adapted to be flexed by the depression of said rim.
2. In a device for affixing labels to vessels, a label-1eceptacle, a follower therein, a resilient bearing for said follower, a spring-supported rim depressible independently of said follower and a support for said receptacle, said support having a bottle-receiving recess therein, the same being in communication with the top of said receptacle.
3. In a device for affixing labels to vessels, a label-receptacle, a downwardly movable rim at the top of said receptacle, spring plates adapted to be flexed by the depression of the rim, and means supporting said receptacle and having openings in which the upper ends of said plates have lateral play.
e. In a device for aliixing' labels to vessels, a label-receptacle, a support therefor, a downwardly-movable rim at the top of said receptacle, and a resilient carrier for said rim composed of spring plates adapted to be flexed by the depression of said rim.
5. In a device for affixing labels to vessels, a label-receptacle, a support therefor, and a follower in said receptacle, said. receptacle having an opening in its side, and said follower being provided with lateral extensions which freely occupy said openings, one of said extensions forming a handle and both extensions serving as guides for said follower.
