Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 8, 1909.
Application filed April 15, 1908, Serial No. 427,196. Renewed November 11, 1908. Serial No. 462,155.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, DWIGHT A. LEFFING- WELL, citizen of the United States, residing at Uhrichsville, in the county of Tuscarawas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Boots and Trousers, of which the following is a specliication.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in nether garments, and the invention has for its object a simple, and efficient construction of trousers and boots combined, arranged to be detachably connected together by peculiar means hereinafter described, so as to afford, when applied a continuous water tight garment eX- tending to the waist line.
With these and other objects in view as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts that I shall hereinafter describe and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof on an enlarged scale; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 1 designates trousers that may be formed of rubber, canvas or other water proof material, and 2 designates a boot of rubber or the like designed to coact with the trousers to provide a continuous water roof nether garment, the trousers being of such length as to reach the upper edge of the boot.
Each of the boots 20f this improved garment is provided at its upper end with a collar 3 which is secured therein in any desired or suitable waterproof manner, the outer edgeof the collar where it is inserted in the upper end of the boot being preferably corrugated, as indicated at 4. A ove the upper end of the boot the collar 3 is prefera ly thickened as at 5 and the collar is provided at its upper edge with an outstanding annular flange 6. Each leg of the trousers has a ring 7 secured therein by water proof cement,
and each ring is formed with an instanding flange 9 designed to be slipped up against the flange 6 of the collar 3 when the trousers are drawn on over the boots.
10 designates a gasket which is preferably tubular as shown, and which is preferably permanently secured to one of the flanges 6 or 9 by some adhesive substance, said gasket being compressed between the flanges when the same are brought together, so as to secure a water tight joint.
In order to secure the collar 3 and the ring 7 together I provide a clamping band 11 which is constructed in hinged sections connected together at one end as indicated at 12 one of said sections being provided at its opposite end with a spring latch 13 riveted thereto and carrying a pin 14 adapted to catch into a socket formed in the adjoining end of the other section.
In the application of the device, after the boots have been drawn on, the trousers which are preferably in the nature of over-alls, are slipped over the boots and drawn upwardly until the flanges 9 of the rings 7 are brought into engagement with the outstanding flanges 6 of the collars 3. The clamping bands 11 are then slipped around the collars 3 and into the annular recesses 15 formed in such collars to receive the bands, the other ends of the bands being locked together to tightly clamp the flanges 9 and 6. It is to be particularly noted that the abutting edges of the band 11 and the flanges 9 are beveled as indicated at 16, so that when the band is applied it will act with a wedge action against the flange 9 when the band is pressed into the recess 19 and tightly clamp the flange 9 against the flange 6 and the interposed gasket 10.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that I have provided a very simple construction of combined trousers and boots that will be particularly useful to plumbers, gas fitters, members of fire companies, hunters and the like, or wherever combined boots and trousers are required because the connection between the trousers legs and the boots is a detachable one so that the boots can be used for ordinary wear and the trousers laid aside except when. needed. Hence it will be seen that the person using my improved nether garment may use the boots by themselves unt1l he arrives at the place Where the complete article of apparel is required, and may then readily draw the trousers or over-ails over the boots and securely clamp the parts together; while with the present hip boot, thesame has to be worn all the time around the body or in a heavy bulky roll at the knee.
As the connecting parts of the device are preferably of aluminium it is clear that the garment will be comparatively light; and
furthermore, a positive saving in weight is effected by reason of the fact that the trousers may be detached and only used when needed as the weight of the collars in the boots will not nearly equal the weight of the ordinary hip boot now commonly used.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. The combination with a trousers leg and boot, of a detachable connection between the two, said connection comprising annuli connected to the respective parts and formed with oppositely extending flanges, and a clamping band adapted to be secured to one of said parts and adapted to clamp the flanges together.
2. The combination with a trousers leg and boot, of a collar secured to one of said parts and formed with an outstanding flange, a ring secured to the other part and formed with an instanding flange, a gasket interposed between said flanges, and a clamping band secured to the collar and clamping the flanges together.
3. The combination with a trousers leg 35 arranged to be connected together to clamp A the instanding flange against the outstanding flange.
4. The combination with a trousers leg or boot, of a collar secured to one of said parts, and formed with an annular recess and an outstanding flange, a ring secured to the other part and formed with an instanding flange adapted to be slipped up against the outstanding flange, and a clamping band arranged to be secured to the collar and for abutting relation with the abutting flange, the surfaces of the band and said flange being beveled as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony WllGlQOf 1 afllx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
