CHARLES E. STEWART, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
BOAT-RELEASING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led November 7, 1908.
Patented June 8, 1909.
Serial N0. 461,495.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. STEWART, a citizen of the United States, residing inthe city and county of San Francisco and State oi California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boat-Releasing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of apparatus in connection with ships boats, which has for its object the release of the boat from its lashings, preparatory to lowering it from the davits.
In practice, the boat when hoisted by the tackles to the davit-heads, is supported and held in place by hangers and grips, the former taking the weight oi'l" the tackles, and the latter holding the boat snugly in against a spar lashed between the davits. When .these hangers and grips are released, the
boat swings out to position ready to be lowered by the tackles. It is the common practice to secure the inner ends of the hangers and grips, to the davits, by means of tackles which have to be separately released and let go, in order to i'ree said ends, thus taking up valuable time which in an emergency may be of the highest importance. This operation also lacks in precision of simultaneous action, which in the case of four ends to be released is a decided disadvantage and may result in disaster in lowering away the boat.
The object of my invention is to remedy these diiliculties by providing for the precise and simultaneous release, by a single operation, of the inner ends of both hangers and both grips, so that the boat may be instantly released to swing out to position to be lowered.
To this end, my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the apparatus, which I shall now fully describe, by reference to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the boat at the davit-heads and lashed in place by the hangers and grips, the inner ends of which are detachably secured to the davits by means of hooks, which are ada ted by a single operation to be simultaneous y tripped. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, enlarged, of one of the trip-hooks.
1 indicates an awning rail, and 2 are the davits.
3 is a spar which is lashed between the davits, and is provided with bulers 4.
5 is the boat.
6 are the hoisting and lowering tackles, which are connected with the boat fore and aft and with the davit-heads in some usual manner. I have, for the sake of clearness, shown the falls of these tackles broken away, it being readily understood that they will lead, as usual, to some belaying cleat or cleats. These tackles form no part of my invention and need n0 further illustration.
7 are the hangers, one fore and one aft.
These are secured at their outer ends to the davit-heads, and they thence pass under the boat, and at their inner ends are also secured to the davits, by the tripping means which I shall presently describe.
8 are the grips. There are two of these. One of them 1s secured at its outer en d to the head of one davit, and it thence passes diagonally outside of and against and under the boat to the other davit, to the body of which it is secured by the tripping means to be presently described. The other grip is simiarly but reversely arranged with respect to the two davits, as is clearly shown. It will now be seen that the hangers.V 7 take the weight of the boat, while the grips S hold it snugly in against the buffers 4 of the spar 8.
Referring now tofFig. 2, I show a trip-hook indicated as a whole by 9. It comprises an open or slotted body portion 10, a trip-arm 11 hinged to the body portion and a slip-link 12, adapted to slide upon both the body portion and the trip-arm, whereby it both holds and releases said trip arm. Referring again to Fig. 1, it will be seen that I use four of these trip-hooks 9. Each is suitably lashed to a davit. One receives upon its trip-arm, the ringed-end of one hanger; a second similarly receives the end of the other hanger; a third receives the end of one grip and a fourth receives the end of the other grip.
13 are two lines, the falls of which are belayed upon a convenient cleat 1/1 on a stanchion 15 of the awning rail 1. These lines pass upwardly and diverge over a small block 16. Each is then branched into two lines as shown, one branch of each passing under a small block 17, one on each davit, and thence up to and over a block 1SonV each davit and thence to the slip link 12 of the hooks 9, which secure the inner ends of the hangers 7 5 and the ends of these branches are secured to the eyes of said slip-links. The other branches pass over the blocks 17 down to and under blocks 19 and thence to and-Willl swing out ready for..lowering.
Having thus :described vmy invention what v Ifelainrlas new and desire teseeure hyLetters Patent is l.
