My improved bottle-labeling machine makes use of the usual instrulnentalities in bottle-labeling machines, but adapts the same to the double function of applying simultaneously a body-label and a necklabel to the bottle.

The )ottZe-rcSt.-About midway of the height of the supporting frame is located the stationary bottle-rest B. The bottle-rest is made of concave shape and adapted to the shape of the` bottle to be labeled. It is capable of adjustment in upward and downward direction accordinfr to th'e various sizes of the bottles to be labeled. 'The bottle-rest is provided at its rear-end with a stop which is capable of adjustment in forward or backward direction by means of a clamping screw and nut. At the front-end of the bottle-rest is va downwardly curved lip for facilitating the placing in position and rernovinsor of the bottles. After the l'iottle-rest and bottle-stop are once adjusted to the roper size and shape of the bottles to be abeled, they remain stationary thriiiughout the labeling operation.

The cushioning spring p" serves to give a certain elasticity to the pickers and their o erating parts when taking up the labels at t e lower parts of the label-receptacles.
At the rear-ends of the sleeves p are arranged spring-actuated knuckles e, the helical springs eX of which are connected to short uprights e1 on the crosshead p5, as shown in Fig. 6. The knuckles e are providedv with outwardly projecting toes e2 and opposite the saine with rollers e3 which move along the sides of a stationary guide-plate e* during the upward motion of the )ickeearms after they i have been turned on t eir axis into vertical position, Aas shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3. `During thc upward motion of the pickers, thetoes c2 of the saine are placed in contact with rollers cat the inner ends of short fulcrunied and spring-actuated levers e7 and thereby turned into vertical position, so that the rollers 6" engage the sides of the stationary guide-plate c* and that the pickers receive during their upward motion thc supplyr of paste from the paste-rollers d". The piles of labels in the receptacles are pressed in downward direction by the curved ends of a horizontal presser-bar h4 which is pivoted to the lower end of a vertical center-bar h5 and extended in forward and backward direction over the labels in both receptacles. The center-bar 71,5 is provided with a rack h at one side and guided vertically in ways of a horizontal bracket-arm k7, which is capable of adjustment in forward and backward direction by a supporting sleeve ha and setscrew 7L. The presser-bar 7a4, together with the label-receptacles, can be lifted by means of a crank-arm lilo so as to interrupt the `label-feed. The shaft of the crank-arm t turns in suitable bearings on the supporting mechanism of the labe -reeeptacles, and is provided with a crank li which is connected by a pivot-linkli12 with. the supporting frame F. To thc front-end of the horizontal bracket-arm k7 is pivoted a weighted pawl 71,13, the lower tapering endof which engages thc teeth of the rack-bai' hi and permits the horizontal presser-bar to slid c with the rackbar in downward direction as the piles of labels in the receptacles are gradually diminished in height. 'lhe presser-bar exerts a downward center-pressure on the piles of labels, so that the lower-labels forin a slight bulgel and facilitate thereby the contact with the paste-co vered faces of the pickers as the saine are moved upwardly into contact with the lowerniost labels. By lifting the weighted paw] lil, the presser-bar can be moved in its uppermost position above the label-receptacles so as to permit the refilling of the saine.

The connecting rod 'i4 between the upper and lower links el' the oscillatingI presser-arm t' is provided at its Iupper end with a head and at its lower/end with a screwnut and jam-nut that are attached at opposite sides of the sleeve of the lower link. The cushioning spring is interposed between the sleeve of the upper link and t'he jam-nut of the lower link so as to permit the yielding of the upper link when the oscillating presserarm 'i forms contact with the bottle so as to prevent sudden blows or shocks that may exert an injurious ini'luence on the bottle and labels placed thereon. The oscillating 'presser-arm t' is operated by an antilriction roller t8 on the oscillating lever i7 and an actuating cam t on the cam-shaft S1, the cam being so shaped as to produce at the proper 4time the required motion oi the presser-arm. The presser-:nun isprovided with two presser-blocks 10Min, a'larger one for the body-label and a smaller one for the neck-label. The presser-block il for thc body-label is guided by a pin t in a recess of the presser-arm and cushioned by a helical .springt13 that is inserted in a socket i, at the rear-part of the presser-arm. The presserblock t for the neck-label is connected by a curved arm t with the upper end of the oscillating presser-arm and attached thereto .by a fastening screw. The presser-block ior the neck-label corresponds in size with the neck-label, and is made of inverted V-shape .so as t0v hold the neck-label with its lower edges on the neck of the bottle, asl shown in Fig. 3. The oscillating presser-armis shown in upright or normal position of rest in full vlines in-Fig. 4 and in position on the body and levers wz, the lower ends of which are ful-- crumed at wX to a vertically guided sleeve w3A which receives a vertically reciprocating motionon an upright guide-rod wy at the top oi which is a stop wz. This motion is produced by an oscillating lever w4`which is iulcruined at its rear-end to the frame F and actuated by a cam w, the cam-groove of which engages an antii'riction roller w attached to the middle part ofthe oscillating lever w4.
The supporting levers for the body-wipers are connected by helical springs w7 with a pair of oscillating levers w8, which are fulcrumed to lugs w0 on the vertically reciprocating sleeve w3, .eoncentrically with the wiper-supporting levers wz, and which serve for moving the wipers in outward direction. The oscillating motion is imparted to the wiper-moving levers w8, and to the wipersupporting levers wz, by a cam w10, the camgroove ci' which operates an oscillating lever w11 which is iulerumed at its rear-end to the frame F. The opposite end of; the lever w11 is connected by a pivot-link w12 with one ol the wiper-moving levers from which the Inotion is imparted to the second wiper-moving rever by a pin w13 at the end of the first lever engaging a slot w14 at the end bf the second lever, as shown in'Figs. 13 and 14. By this mechanism the wipers w are spread apart .during their upward motion so as to clear the bottle. At the beginning of the downward motion,V the wipers are moved inwardly over the ends oi the label which is held in proper position on the bottle by the presser-arm i, al'ter which the downward motion of the wipers takes place so that the gummed under-side of the label is placed inradhesive contact with the bottle. i
The neck-Zabel wipers-The wipers w1 for the neck-labels can be made of the same construction `as the wipers for the body-labels when anordinary short label is placed transversely on' the neck of the bottle. In many cases, however, the neck-label is so long that it goes all around the neck of the bottle,
l A special construction l'or applying such labels is necessary.v This special construction ol` the wipers and theiroperating mechanism is shown in Figs. 7, 8, 9 and l0, and consists of a pair of elbow-shaped knuckles e and thin spring-plates el which are cut into small strips at about two-thirds of their length, bel'ore being bent at their ends. The acting wiper-ends consist of a number of bent-up elastic wiper-strips e? ca able to adapt themselves to the variousshapes oi' the bottlenecks. These elastici wiper-stri s are attached to the elbow-shaped knuc les which are pivoted to short shanks e3 at the u per ends of fulcrumed neck-wiper levers v4, w ich Shanks are supported in sleeveslof the neckwiper levers. The upper ends of the elbiwshaped knuckles are provided with rollers o5 that move over the neck ol' theY bottle, guiding the elastic 'wiper-ends over the label around the bottle-neck, while the upper ends der the lowermost labels in of the fulcrumed wiper-levers ward and inward direction.
The whole neck-wiper device is suspended from pins e which are attached to the upper ends ol' the body-wiper supportinpr leveis so that the neck-wipers make the same eombined motion as the body-wipers. To this Inotion is added a third one by means o'l' a stationary cam-plate vv7 which acts on yielding rollers c at the lower ends ol` the neel(- wiper levers, so that their upper ends are forced to make an inward motion duringr their descending motion and produce the wiping` action on the neck-label by guidinpr the neck-wipers by their rollers around the bottle-neck. The s )rings v10 interposed between the wi er-knudlrles and the wiper-levers serve to n'ng the wiperknuckles back into the former position after the wiping operation is finished, while springs c between the lower ends of the neck-wiper levers and pins on the Shanks of the yielding rollers es impart a certain flexibility to the neck-wiper levers and their rollers.
O cmtion-The improved bottle-labeling mae iine is operated as follows: The handlever by which motion is imparted to the driving-shaft is first set-in proper position. The foot-treadle is then depressed so that motion is transmitted from the driving-shaft to the cam-shaft. From the camshaft the V ditlerent operative parts are actuated. The
attendant places a bottle in position on the bottle-rest. The pickers are then moved in upward direction, turned into vertical position about lnidway of their ascending motion so that they assume a vertical position and are placed in contact with the pastesnpply rollers which are then held in position so as to form contact with the pickers and transfer paste to the same. The pickers are held in vertical position by the stationary guideplate and returned into horizontal osition, as soon -as they .clear the upper en of the saine. They are moved in this position unthe label-receptacles so as to lorni adhesive contact with the same and pull the same in downward direction away from the lower ends et the fingers of thelabel-receptacles as soon as the descending motion of the pickers commences. is soon as the labels taken up by the pickers arrive respei tively on the bodv and neck of the bottle, the oscillating' presser-arm moves in downward direction through an angle of Q00, so as to hold both labels on the body and neck ol the bottle Simultaneously therewith the pirkers are moved upward and the wipers are brought over the ends of the body and nerhP labels and moved in inward and downward direction so as to apply the .ummed ends ol the labels in a reliable inanner to the body and noch ofthe bottle. As soon as the labels are applied to the bottle,
rertion so to clear the body and nerkol the bottle and permit the removal of the latv terv from the bottle-rest. A new bottle is then placed on the bottle-rest and the successive motion of theoperative parts repoated and the labels that are brought down by the pickers are transferred and applied to the bottle. During the descending motion of the pickers, the paste-supply.rollers are moved outwardly so that they take up a new supply ot paste by contact with the take-up rollers. During the ascending motion of the pickers the paste-supply rollers are moved inwardly beyond the inner edges of the pastereeeptacles, so as to form Contact with the pickers, which are turned into vertical position by the rollers and held in vertical position by thev guide-plate until they have passed the paste-supply rollers. This ai rangement secures the positive turning of the pickers int-o vertical position, the taking up of the paste by the faces of the pickers, and the returning of the iclrers into horizontal` position below the laibehreceptacles so that they can take up the lowermo'st labels in the saine and bring them b their 'descending motion onto the body an( neck ofthe bottle.

claim as new and desire to secure by Lett-ers Patent: 1. 5. In a' bottle-labeling machine, the combination of two setsel' paste-supplying devices located at opposite sides of the machine and provided .each with paste-supply rollers, two pairs ot pickers, one lor the body-labels and the other for the neck-labels, inechanisrri for imparting verticali reciprocating motion to the/pickers, mee ianisin for tilting the pickers when in line with the paste-supply rollers, mechanism for returningr the pickers into horizontal position, and two label-receptacles, one for the body-labes and the other for theneck-labels, for delivering the lowere most ,labels to the pickers when they arrive at the lowercnds et the label-receptacles.
6. means for returning the pickers into hori-y apntal position below the label-receptacles,
and means for returning the pickers without being tilted for transferring the labels to the body and neck of the bottle. Y

In a'bottle-labelingmachine, the conibination of two label-receptacles, one for the body and the other lor the neck labels, each receptacle consisting of a pluralit of pairs ol label-supporting iingers, means or adjusting said pairs of fingers for different sizes el' labels, a presser' device for holding the piles ol labels in the label-receptacles, and means for raising the label-receptacles away from the pickers for interrupting the label-feed by the pickers.
8. In a bottle-labeling machine, the combination of a receptacle for the body-labels, a receptacle for the neck-labels, a horizontal presser-bar arranged to bear at its ends on the lpiles of labels in the respective receptacles, and a vertical center-bar p'ivoted to said presser-bar and by which the latter is adjusted.
9. In a bottle-labeling machine; the ceinbiiiation of a bottle-rest, a fulciuined and oscillating presser-arm provided with a pivoted and spring actuated.presser-bloekat its middle portion, and a fixed presser-block at its outer end for holding the body and neck-labels, means for oscillating the presserarm at the proper time for holding the labels in position on the body and neck of the bottle, and means for cushioning the presserarm for giving elasticity to the blows.
10. In a bottle-labeling machine, the coni-v vertical position during their ascending motion, means for guiding the pickers while in vertical position, means yfor returning'the pickers into horizontal position, a cam-shaft, a spring-cusl'i-ioned connecting rod between the cam-shaft and crosshead, and means for imparting reciprocating motion tothe springcushioned'conneeting rod from said camshaft.
12. In a bottle-labeling machine, the combination of a vertically reciprocating crosshead, guideways for the same, picker-arms supported on said erosshead, picker-sleeves turning on said arms, two sets of pickers supported on the picker-sleeves, cam levers Ypivoted at their upper ends to the supporting trarne, a spring connecting the lower ends ot said cam-levers, a stationary guide-plate 1ntermediately of said cam-levers, means for turning the pickers into vertical position during their ascending motion, means for re' turning the pickers into horizontal position when arriving at the upper end of their ascending motion, a yielding spring-cushioned connecting rod pivoted to the crosshead, a cam-shaft, and means for reciprocatingthe spring-cushioned connecting rod from said cam-shaft. v
13. `In a bottleelabeling machine, the combination of label-receptacles, horizontal supporting rods for the same, and a crank-mechanism connected with the supporting rods'to raise both label receptacles simultaneously and interrupt the label feed. l

In a bottle-labeling machine, the combination of Alabel-receptacles composed of a plurality of pairs of fingers, horizontal rods for supporting said label-receptacles, a cross-bar conne'ctingsaid horizontal rods, upright guidebars for guiding the cross-ban, and a crank mechanism between the cross-bar and frame for raising bodily the label-receptacles for interrupting the label-feed to the pickers.
15. In a bottle-labeling machine, the combination of vertically reciprocating pickers,
means for turning the same into vertical p0- sition during their ascending motion, pastereceptacles, take-up rollers 1n said receptacles, oscillating paste-su plyrollers, means for guiding the pickers uring their ascending motion, and means for moving'the pastesupply rollers alternately in' contact with the ta ce-u rollers and the ascending pickers.
16. n a bottle-labeling machine, the combination of a pair of vertically reciprocating pickers, means for turning'the same into vertical position during their ascending motion, means for guidingthe same while ascending, paste-supply receptacles comprising take-up rollers and paste-supply rollers, pivot-links for said paste-supply rollers, oscillating camlevers pivoted at thelr upper ends, and a spring connectinv' the lower ends of said came levers, said camevers being connected with the shafts of the paste-supply rollers for moving the same alternately 1n contact with the take-up rollers and the ascending pickers.

In a bottle-labeling machine, the combination of wipers for the body-label, pivoted levers on which the wipers are su ported, means for raising and lowering sai levers ering said levers, oscillating levers yieldingly connected with said supporting levers and pivoted intermediately of their length, means to actuate one of said oscillating levers, and a connection between the adjacent ends yof said levers by which the movement of one is trans mitted to the other.
19. -In a bottle-labeling machine, the com.- bination, with the bottle-rest, of interme-A diately pivoted levers, neck-labelwipers carried thereby, means -for raising and lowering said levers and a guide-plate below the bot-` tle-rest and between and in engagement with the lower free ends of said neck-wiper levers.
' 20. In a bottle-labeling machine, the necklabel wiper consisting of an elbow-shaped knuckle 'provided with a guide-roller at the upper end, -and slitted wiper-strips havin@ bent-up ends located at the lower end of sal knuckle.
21. In a bottle-labeling machine, the combination with pivoted levers which carry the body-label wipers, and means for actuating said levers, of pivoted levers suspended from said firstnamed levers and movable bodilyy therewith, and neck-label wipers carried by the last-named levers.
22. In a bottle-labeling machine, the combination of ivoted levers carrying the wipers for the bo y-labels, means for raising and` lowering said levers and at the same time oscillating the same, pins carried by said levers at their upper ends, levers pivoted intermediately of-their length and suspended from said pins, said 4 levers carrying neck-label wipers at their upper ends, and a cam-plate by which the lower free ends of the neckwi er levers are guided.
