LAND-ANCHOR.
Beit known that I, FRANK LUCAS, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Sidney, Shelby-county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Land-An- .fchors,` of r'which the following is a specificario tion.
They present invention, Arelating to an improved land anchor of the Stomabugh type,
y(seey `United States Patent No. 501,811) designed for anchoring guy wires and the like, will bejreadily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing in which:-
Figure 1 1s a side elevation of my improved anchor: Fig. 2 1s a similar view of the y* anchor, in connection with the tube wrench employed in sinking the anchor, the tube wrenchk appearing in vertical section: and Flg. 3 aperspective view, part vertical lonn gitudinal section, of the upper portion of the anchor and tube wrench. `f f inthe drawing 1 1, indicates the anchor proper, being a helix adapted to be screwed into the ground: 2, the rectangular upper ,hub thereof adapted to receive a wrench: 3,
- the anchor rod, having its lower end secured in the anchor: 4, an eye fixedly secured to the j. y f upper. end ,of the anchor rod and adapted to receive the wire or other connection with which the anchor is to cooperate: 5, the base y *portion of the eye: 6, the wrench tube, being a tube rectangular in cross-section and havl ing y.an interior` dimension adapting it to freely. ass over the base 5 of the eye and to fit the u per hub -2 of the anchor,
- tance between the upper end of the hub 2 and the under surface of the base 5 of the eye:
a detent, illustrated as a set screw, for securing the sleeve in position of vertical adjustment upon the wrench tube: 9, the opening in the upper end of the sleeve adapted, when properlyadjusted angularly, to pass over the base of the eye: 10, a pm and slot arrangement, of an obvious character, connecting the wrench tube and the sleeve and permitting the sleeve to have a limited degree of sliding motion on the wrench tube: 11, the
wrench handle, being a cross bar adapted to takeselective positions along the length of the wrench tube: and 12, a set screw extending through one arm of the wrench handle i and adapted to impinge against the wrench Specification of Letters Patent.

tube and hold the handle in selected position on the wrench tube.
The eye 4 is permanently secured, as by riveting, to the upper end of the anchor rod and it is so set, angularly, that the rectangle of its base 5 is angular with reference to the rectangle of the hub 2 of the anchor, or, the two rectangles instead of being so set as to register with each other, one is substantially an eighth of a turn in advance of the other.
When the anchor is to be sunk in the ground, the handle is first to be applied and secured to the tube; the sleeve is to be adjusted to downward position; the tube is then to be slipped over the eye until the upper end of the sleeve is below the base of the eye, the tube is then to be given a partial turn so that its lower end may go down over the hub 2 on the anchor; the sleeve is then to be adjusted to upward position with its upper end engaging under the corners of the base of the eye, or to a position so close up to the base of the eye as to prevent the tube accidentally lifting off of the hub 2V of the anchor; the anchor is then to be screwed into the ground the desired distance; after which the sleeve is to be loosened and lowered and lifted from the hub 2 and then turned properly and withdrawn over the eye.
1. A land anchor comprising, a helical anchor proper provided with a rectangular upper hub, an anchorI rod iixedly secured therein, an eye fixedly secured to the upper end of the anchor rod and having side projections at its base, said side projections and the corners of the hub being arranged in angular relationship with each other, combined substantially as set forth, whereby a wrench-tube rectangular in cross-section may be passed down over the eye and rod and then partially turned to engage said rectangular hub and come under said projections.
2. A land anchor comprising, a helical anchor proper provided with a rectangular upper hub, an anchor rod fixedly secured therein, an eye fixedly secured to the upper end of the anchor rod and having side projections at its base arranged angularly with reference to the corners of said hub, a wrench-tube rectangular in cross-section and adapted to fit said hub and having a length less than the distance between the hub and the base of the eye, a wrench handle attached to said tube, and a retaining device mounted upon the upper end of the tube and adapted for adjustment into position to engage under the base of the eye when the lowerend of the tube is in engagement with said hub, combined substantially as set forth, whereby the tube may be passed down over the eye and rod and engage With said rectangular hub and be held against lifting therefrom by said side projections of the eye.
3. A land anchor comprising, a helical anchor proper provided With a rectangular' upper hubJ an anchor rod iXedly secured therein, an eye iixedly secured to the upper end of the anchor rod and having side projections at its base arranged angular-ly vdth reference to the corners of said hub, a Wrench tube reetangular in cross-section and adapted to pass over said eye and iit said hub and having a length less than the distance between the hub and the base of the eye, a wrench handle attached to the tube7 a sleeve slidable on the upper end of the Wrench tube and having an upper opening adapted to pass the base ol: the eye in one condition of angular adjust ment and to catch under the base of the eye when in the angular position corresponding with the engagement of the tube With said hub, and means for securing said sleeve in position of vertical adjustment on the tube, combined substantially as set forth.
