hattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved lva'ter-closet Seat, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

Theobject of the invention is to provide a new and improved water closet seat, built up from a number of pieces of wood, formed and olned in such a manner that the greatest amount of strength is had at the sides,

thatis, at the points most needed.

' The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims. :4 A practical embodiment of the invention 18 represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.

Figure 1 is a plan view of the improvement, parts being 1n section; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of the same on the line 22 of Fig. 1.

fit the corresponding side walls of the groove H. The rib H engaging the groove G in the base of the tongue G holds the united pieces firmly against wiggling in an up and down direction, and by making the sides of the tongues in zigzag shape a large angular bearing surface is provided, to insure a proper hold even if the tongue and the dovetail groove should not have an eX ceedingly snug fit. By forming the tongue and groove connection in the manner described, an exceedingly strong and durable joint is had.

In order to hold the main or principal pieces A, B, C and D in proper relation one to the other and to reinforce the same along their joints, use is made of dowel pins I, extending obliquely through the joints of the pieces A, C, A, D, B, C, and B, D, respec tively, as plainly indicated in Fig. 1. The inner ends of the dowel pins may also pass through the joints between the end pieces C, D, and the filling pieces E, F, but such arrangement is not absolutely necessary. By using the dowel pins I in the manner described the ends of the main pieces A, B, C and D are strongly reinforced, and at the same time the pieces are held against movement one relative to the other.

By reference to Fig. 1 it will be seen that the grains of the wooden main side pieces A, B run at right angles to the grains of the wooden cross pieces 0, D, and by in- V serting the dowels I obliquely, as above de scribed and shown in the drawings, the said dowels I pass at angles through the grains of the sets of pieces A C, A D, B C, and B D, thus preventing splitting of the said main pieces. It will also be noticed that by arranging the main pieces A, B, C and D and the dowels I in the manner described, the dowels radiate from an approximately common cen ter, and hence in the manufacture of the seat the workman is guided when boring the holes for the dowels.

It is understood that the front and rear pieces C, D together with the filling pieces E, F, form the opening in the seat, as plainly indicated in Fig. 1.

By constructing a water closet seat in the manner described, the greatest amount of strength is had at the side pieces A and B, that is, at the points most needed. The said side pieces extending uninterruptedly in a transverse direction are securely joined to the front and rear pieces 0, D, and reinforced by the dowel pins I, as previously explained.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A water closet seat, comprising transversely-extending wooden side pieces, front and rear wooden cross pieces dovetailed at their ends with the inner edges of the said side pieces at the ends thereof, the said transverse pieces having their grains running at right angles to the grains of the said cross pieces, side filling pieces dovetailed at their outer sides with the middle remaining portions of the inner edges of the said side pieces, the ends of the said filling pieces being dovetailed to the inner edges of the said front and rear cross pieces at the ends thereof, and dowels passing obliquely through the grains of and through the said dovetailed joints between the said side pieces and the front and rear cross pieces, the said dowels radiating from an approximately common center.

A water closet seat, comprising transversely extending side pieces, front and rear cross pieces joined at their ends with the inner edges of the said side pieces at the ends thereof, and side filling pieces joined at their outer sides with the middle remaining portions of the inner edges of the said side pieces, the ends of the said filling pieces being joined to the inner edges of the said front and rear cross pieces at the ends there of, the joints of the connected pieces being formed by a dovetail tongue on one of the pieces and having a socket in the base and extending throughout the length of the said tongue, the latter extending throughout the length of the joint and fitting a correspondingly shaped dovetail groove in the other piece having a rib engaging the said base socket, the said tongue having zigzag sides fitting correspondingly shaped walls of the said dovetail groove and dowels passing obliquely through the said dovetailed joints between the said side pieces and the front and rear cross pieces, the said dowels radiating from an approximately common center.
