Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led August 21, 1908.
To all whom it may concern: Y
Be it lrnown that l, Louis DELIA, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of vthe city of New York, borough of Manhattan,
in the county and State oi New York, have in vented a new and Improved Skirtdliarker, oi which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to certain improveine-nts in skirt markers, and more artcu larly to adjustable clamping means or holding the shirt alter gripping the lower portion of said skirt, and to constitute a guide l'or a marlier.
The object of the invention is to provide means for gripping the skirt substantially throughout the entire circumference oi' the lower portion thereof and adjustable so as tor grip it at any desired height, and adjustable to receive skirts of any desired size.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this speciiica tion, in which similar characters of reference indicate corres onding parts in both the iigu uros, and in W rich Figure 1 is a top plan view oi' a device constructed in accordance with my invention;
and Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
ln the specific construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, l provide a stationary platform orbase, having outer and inner portions l and 11, separated by an annular channel or groove 12. The inner lati'orm portion 11 has an outer circume itmay be raised above or below the level ol the main platform or base. Any suitable means'inay be employed for varying the elevatios, but, as shown, the inner platform 13 l y,isprovided with a rack bar 14 on one side l thereoil and in engagement with a worm 15.
The Worm is mounted upon a shaft 16, which may be rotated in either direction at will. The drivingmeans for the shaft 16 may, if
erence substantially equal to the circum' desired, include a shaft 17, having bevel gear connections with the shaft 16 and also'having bevel gear connections with a shafl't` 18 disposed adjacent the outer vertical Wall of the platform. At the upper end oi the shaft 18, there is mounted a handle 19 having bevel gear connections with the shaft 18 for driving the latter.
Within the groove 12, l provide two concentric annular clamping rnembers20 and 21, each adjustable to vary its diameter in respectto the lother clamping member and adjustable to vary its diameter in' respect to the inner platform section i 1 The inner clampmg member 20 is adapted to be dis osed' Within the lower edge oi the skirt, Whi e the outer clamping member 21 is adapted to be disposed outside oi the skirt. Each clamp-4 ing member is formed of a series oi slotted lates 22, connected together by diameters oi the clamping members may be varied at will by slidingr the plates past each other. For supporting and adjusting thev positioiroi" the inner clamping member 20,
each alternate plate 22 thereof is connected" to a radially-movable slide 23, supported by the platform and movable in a corresponding groove or slot 2li in the platilprm, so that theelevation of the slides ann` the clamping member cannot be varied, but by moving inwardly or outwardly the' several slides, the diameter of the inner clamping member may be varied at will, and, further, may be caused 'to assume any irregular shape due to the flexibility of the lates 22. Each alternate 'ila-tc is connecte to its corresponding slide` y a substantially U-shaped bar 25, whereby the slide docs not interfere with the dra ing of the skirt over the innerlamping mempber. Each'alternate plate of the outer clamping member is connected to a corresponding ins orolts extending through the slots, so t at the' slide "26, and each slide 26 is carried by and movable longitudinally in respect to the cor` with a portion of the upper surface 'thereoiI Whereby'the slide 26 is normally held' in' engagement `with the slide'gf2'3, so as to'be moved with ,the latter but whereby said' slide 26 may be moved'inde endently of they l slide 23 when desiied; y inovinvv the slides 23, the adjustment-'of the two clampvided with oppositely-disposed upwardl and damping member.
wardly to bring the outer clamping member. toward the inner clamping member to 'firmly grip the lower portion ol` the skirt between the tWo clamping members, to hold the saine While it is Vbeing; marked. The inner elmuping member is of slightly greater height than the outer clamping member, so that when the skirt is gripped between the two, as illus trated in Fig. 2, pieces ol' elialls: or other iriarliingdnezins may he pressed against the skirtet the upper edge ol'l the outer clampingv member, end the skirt will be sul'iported from tric clampingT members, one ol' sind members the inside by the upper portion oi" the inner Thus, the outer member constitutes a, guide for the chalk, while the inner member constitutes a supportyl'i'ir the cloth'while it is being merken.
By making the central platform 1 3 rnd the markers relatively niovaible 1n e. vertical direction, and preferably by vertically adjusting tile inner platform, the skirt may be marked, so as to ie. eut :my desired. length.
- l" it is desired that the skirt barely touch the ground, the platform 13 is adjusted so thm. its upper surface comes-at substantially the seme elevation :is the upper edge ol' the outer 1 clamping member. The skirt moy be marked lcr i greater or less length by raisingor 'lowering the platform. The extent to Whieh the platform is raised or lowered may' be indicated in any suitable manner, bul, as illustreted, l have provided pointer 2T earried bylthe platform .3 -iind extending out through e vertice-l slot in the outer wall ol' i be base or platform l() and adjacent the crank tion in elevation may be noted.
