To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK J. FLANAGAN, l
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Smoke-Oonsuming Furnace, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved smoke-consuming furnace, which is simple and durable in construction, and arranged to insure a complete burning of the smoke and gases arising from the burning fuel inthe fire box, utilizing the burning fuel to the fullest advantage for heating purposes and providing a complete consumption of the fuel.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claim.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of a boiler furnace provided with the improvement; Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
In the brick-work A of the furnace is set in the usual manner the boiler B, below the front end of which is arranged the fire box O having a grate formed of longitudinally extending tubiform grate bars D, supported at their rear ends on the bridge wall E of the furnace. The front ends of the hollow grate bars D are engaged by apertured nipples F formed on the inner side of a transverselyextending distributing chamber F set in the sides of the brick-work A, as plainly indicated in Fig. 2. One end of the distributing chamber F is connected with a discharge pipe G of a blower G of any approved construction, and having its inlet pipe Gr connected with the smoke box H of the boiler furnace, the smoke box being connected in the usual manner with the stack 1, having a damper or valve J, adapted to be opened or closed by the operator in charge of the furnace.
The top of each grate bar D is provided with perforations D, and the bottom of each grate bar is provided at the rear end with a discharge opening D for the ashes, cinders and the like passing into the hollow grate bars D. The discharge openings D are adapted to be opened and closed by shutters or valves K, secured on a transversely-extending slide K, mounted to slide in suitable bearings K attached to the bridge wall E, one outer end of the slide K being connected with a lever L under the control of the operator, for moving the slide K transversely, with. a view to move the shutters K into an open or a closed position relative to the discharge openings D When the fuel is burning on the grate bars D and smoke and gases arise and pass through the combustion chamber and through the flues in the boiler B into the smoke box H, then the smoke and gases are prevented from passing into the stack I on account of the damper J being closed, the smoke and gases being drawn from the smoke box H by way of the inlet pipe G into the blower G, which forces the smoke and gases through the discharge pipe G into the distributing chamber F, by way of the apertured nipples F into the hollow grate bars D, from which the smoke and gases are forced up through the openings D into the burning fuel, to be consumed in the fire box O. Thus by the arrangement described the smoke and gases arising from the burning fuel on the hollow grate bars D are returned by way of the hollow grate bars back into the com bustion chamber, to be consumed therein, and when the fuel is burning brightly and. the smoke and gases are consumed then the said blower G may be stopped and the damper J opened, to allow running of the furnace with natural draft. Cinders, ashes and like extraneous matter passing through the openings D into the hollow grate bars D are forced rearward therein by the blast of smoke and gases passing from the dis tributing chamber F into the hollow grate bars D, the said cinders and ashes being discharged through the openings D into the ash pit O whenever the operator moves the shutters K into an open position.
The hollow tubular grate bars D may ex tend at their ends through the bridge wall E, and in this case the discharge openings D are at the rear ends of the grate bars, to permit of discharging the cinders to the rear of the bridge wall. The openings D are controlled by shutters or valves K, as above explained. It will also be noticed that the grate bars can be readily repla'rd by new ones in case of being burned out or otherwise injured.
By the arrangement described a complete consumption of the smoke and gases arising from the burning fuel in the fire box takes place, and consequently the heat generated. is utilized to the fullest advantage, and a complete consumption of the fuel takes place.
The smoke-consuming furnace shown and described is very simple and durable in construction and is composed of comparatively few parts, not liable easily to get out of order.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
In a furnace of the class described, a bridge wall a transversely extending air distributing chamber in the brick work of the furnace at the front thereof, and provided with a plurality of hollow nipples on its in ner face, a plurality of hollow grate bars engaging the nipples at their front ends, and supported on the bridge wall at their rear ends, said bars having a plurality of openings in their upper faces and provided with outlet openings at theirrear ends on the under sides thereof, and closures for the openings.
