fIWITNESSES v @MZZ UNITED STATES PATENT ornron GEORGE WESTINGHOUSE, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
GEARING.
Application filed April 29, 1897, Serial No. 634,467. Renewed November 16, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE Wnsrrue- HOUSE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented or discovered a certain new and useful Improvement in Gearing, of which improvement the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide improved means for transmitting motion from one rotating part or member of a ma chine or mechanism to another; and to this end my invention consists of a novel construction and combination of friction gearing for efieoting such transmission of motion.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section illustrating an application of my improvenn-nt; Fig. 2, a view showing the driving shaft and friction device of Fig. 1, on alarger scale; Fig. 3, a section through the casing and shaft at the right of the friction wheels as shown in Fig. 1
on a slightly larger scale than Fig. 1; Figs. 4 i
and 5, detail views, on a larger scale, showing a modification. of the construction shown. in i Figs. 1 and 2, and Fig. 6, a detail view of a l the same scale as Figs. 3
modification on and 4.
Within the casing, 1, is fitted a tapered ring, 2, which is cut or split diagonally so that it may be adjusted by being forced into the tapered bore of the casing. head 3, of the casing, extends a shaft 4, car rying av disk 5, in which pins 6, 7, and S are tightly fitted, at equal distances at equal distances from the center of the disk. Friction wheels rotate on the pins 6, 7, and with and roll on the ring 2. X central shaft, 12, extends into the casing, with itsaxis in line with the axis of the shaft 4, in position 8, and engage to engage with each of the wheels 9, 10, and j When the shaft 12 is rota-ted, it imparts rotary motion to the wheels 9, 10, and 11, on. the pins 6, 7, and S, and the engagement of the wheels 9, 10, and 11, with the ring 2, causes them to roll on the ring, and thus rotate the disk 5 and the shaft 4. This general construction of gearing is substantially similar to one of the forms shown and described in my pending application, Serial No. 501,140, filed February 23, 1.894, and I do not, therefore, claim it herein otherwise than as combined with the improved friction device herein described.
In the above recited pending application Specification of Letters Patent.
Through the apart, and 7 i), l(), and 11-. are mounted to Patented May 25, 1909,
Serial No. 462,91
the end of a driving shaft forms the central pinion or driving wheel by which the planet wheels of the friction gearing are rotated. In my present improvement, the portions 13 gage the wheels, 9, I0, and 11;] are the proper diameter to secure ity ratio between the shaft and the wheels, and, in the drawings, they are shown as having the same diameter as the shaft, but they may have a greater or less diameter. than the shaft, and may be formed either integral with the shaft or as a separate part, or parts, and secured to the shaft in any suitable manner.
is reduced in diameter and wound with one or more coils of wire, 16, 16*; the thickness of the wire being such thatthe outside diameter of the coils when wound on the shaft will be substantially equal to the diameter of the port-ions13 and 14 and will there fore engage with the rims of the wheels It, to. and 11. Each coil of wire is lixed at 01h: end and free at the other end; the fixed. end 18 being tightly fitted in a hole 1f) drilled in the shaft.
hen the shaft 12'is rotated in the same direction that the coil is wound from the fixed end, the friction between the coil and the rims of the wheels .tends to uncoil the wire and enlarge. or expand the diameter of i the coil, thereby pressing the wiro out away g from the shaft and against the l'llilstif' the wheels and increasing the friction and the driving power which may be transmitted from the shaft to the wheels.
The construction illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, which has but a single coil of wire, may be ieinployed when the rotation of the shaft 12- is always in the same direction, and it is not desired that it should be reversed.
In Figs. 4, and 6, I havesbown two coils of wire, wound in the same direction ontho and 14, of the driving shaft, 12, which enthe desired veloc- Between the portions 13 and 14, the shaft l 16 when the shaft is rotated in the opposite direction. \Yhen both coils of wireare wound in the same direction on the shaft, as shown in Figs. 4 and 6, either the adjacent or the opposite ends of the wire maybe 1 l r-fixed. If the two coils of wire are wound in construction shown, as the form of the metallic coil or wrapping may be further varied,
I and, if preferred, a number of super-imposed colls may be employed, or a wrapping 9r" winding of metal having a different. cross sectional form may be employed; for instance, a sheet or layerof metal may be secured at one edge and wrapped about the shaft or pulley so thatits'other edge abuts against or overlaps the fixed edge. A pulley or shaft provided with my improvement may be @employed in connection with one or more friction pulleys, and its application is, therefore, not limited to the particular arrangement of wheels shown in the drawing.
The characteristic features of the coil, winding, or wrapping employed in the present case, are these: that the' material of -which it is composed shall beelastic'and resilient, and sufhciently rigid to preserve a substantially circular or cylindrical shape,
even though attached to the shaft at but one point in any one convolution. -These features being present, the best results will be secured if a slight degree of play, or the capacity of a slight radial movement, be provided in the application of the coil, winding, or
wrapping, elsewhere than at a point, or poin ts, of attachment, whereby it may have a slight degree of expansibility or com )ressibility,
pulley, of two metallic coils or wrappings that is, radially from and towarr the shaft. Further, the best results will ordinarily be secured if the convolutions be sufficient in number, that is, counting from the point of attachment, to provide for a slight circumferential motion of the coil, winding, or Wrapping, in the direction of its length, as it may become expanded or be com pressed.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent: v
1 The combination with a shaft, wheel, or
each fixed at one end to the shaft, wheel, or pulley and wound in such a direction relatively to its fixed end that either coil may operate under the action of the tangential force as a friction device according to the direction in which the shaft is rotated, substantially as set forth.
2.- In a mechanism for transm tting motion, a rotatable member, two resilient friction agents fixed at one end to said memberand so arranged that either agent may operate under the agency of a tangential force to transmit power according to the direction in which the shaft is rotated.
