invented certain new and useful Im rovernents in Passenger-Cars, of which the iollowmg is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like characters refer to like parts, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of nearly one-half of the under-frame of a car embodying the elements of said invention; Fig. 2 is a longi tudinal section of the same on the line -'2-2 of Fig. 1 Fig. 3 isa half transverse section of same on, the line 33, Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a l ke view on the line'4-4, Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a like yiew on the line 5--5, Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is a vertlc'al transverse section through the side of the car superstructure; Fig. 7 is an enlarged detail inside face view of the window sill portion of the structure shown in Fig. 6,

An'object ofthe present invention is to 'provide improvements in car vunderframes and superstructure, cspeciall adaptable to that ty e of car which is rovlded with a central 1110 used portion wit steps at each end thereof and an open portion at each end of the car beyond the car steps.
More specifically stated, an object of the resent lnvention is to provide a car underrammg in which the side sill construction may be made shallow, proportionately to its width, to give sufiicient clearance for the trucks and to permit of the location of 'car side ste s between the ear bolsters and sub,- stanti y within the outside line of the side sill; to provide an im roved shock-resisting end construction of t e underframe; and to provide, an improved supgrstructure and interior furnishings in w 'ch the parts are greatly'reduccd in number while preserving a neatap earance of the car.

The car bolsters consist each of a pair of cross-bearers 7 (Figs. 1 and 4) on each side of the center sills a top member 8 extending from one side of the car to the other across and above the center sillsand bent'downwardly at the side sills and outwardly beneath said side sills; a bottom member 9 extending from side sill to side sill beneath the center sills of the car and secured at its ends to member 8; a filler casting 10 located between the bottom member 9 and the center sills 1; and a pair of strut-s 7' between center sills 1 and out of alinement with cross-bearers 7: these parts are suitably connected together. 12 (Fig. 3) is a truss member of channel-shape and downwardly extending flanges extending from side sill to side sill beneath the center sills and secured thereto by angles 13. Truss 12 is secured to side sills 6 by triangular flanged gussets 14 so shaped and mounted on the side sills that their upper edges are inclined downwardly toward the center sills to accommodate the direction of the ends of truss 12. There are preferably two trusses 12 in the car underframe, one on each side of the transverse center of the car. The side sills 6 (Figs. 1, 3, 4 and 5) are built up of a plurality of members and for portions of their lengths are substantially box-shape in cross-section. These side sills comprise Z-sections 6 alon their inner sides extending substantially t e entire length of the car, or from end sill to end sill; outer angular plates 6 two or more in number depending upon the number and location of stairways on the side of the car;-
