FIRE APPARATUS.

Be it known that l, LLOYD ll. OVERLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greensburg, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fire Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in fire apparatus of the emergency type, wherein a length of iire hose is at all times in connection with a water supply pipe, the control of the water supply providing for instant use of the apparatus.
The main object of the present invention is the provision of means whereby the water supply controlling valve is automatically opened as the hose is withdrawn from its su port, whereby as the hose is extended tl ie valve will be 0 erated to establish direct communication between said. hose and the main supply pipe.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an open support or basket for the main length of hose when not in use, and the utilization of the weight of this basket as a means for automatically controlling the valve.
The invention in the preferred details of construction will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly therein to the accompanying drawing, in which:

Referring particularly to the drawing, my improved fire apparatus includes a main sup- 1, secured to the structure in any appropriate manner and in open communication with any appropriate source of water supply under pressure. At an appropriate omt in this pipe there is provided aT-coupling, to which 18 secured a valve casing 3 including a cylindrical body having heads 4 in open communication with the pipe 1. VVithin the body 3 is arranged a valve cylinder 5, said cylinder slidably and snugly fitting with' in the body 3 and normally spring pressed to its forward limit through the medium of a coiled spring 6. The wall of the valve cylinder is formed with an opening 7 designed to register with the inlet 8 to the valve casing when said valve is in a determinate position, the wall of the valve effectually closing the inlet 8 when said valve is in any other position.
Secured to the lower end of the valve casing and in open communication therewith is a length of hose pipe 9, any preferred type of coupling forming the connection. As is usual in this type of apparatus practically the full length of the hose beyond the connection with the valve casing is, when not in use, coiled or arranged in layers in a suitable support. For this purpose 1 provide an open support or basket 10, which is interiorly formed to receive the hose and is open at the top to permit the convenient withdrawal of the hose without delay. The basket 10 is supported by brackets 11 which in turn are secured to an appropriate part of the fixture above and adjacent the valve casing 3. These brackets are provided with ring heads 12 in which is secured a guide rod 18, the latter forming the direct support for the basket. The basket is mounted upon the guide rod 13 through the medium of upper and lower sleeves 14 and 15, the former of which encircles the rod between the brackets 11, while the latter encircles the rod below the lowermost bracket 1 1. From the sleeves 14 and 15 project radially disposed supporting bars 16 longitudinally slotted and engaging bolts 17 secured to the basket, whereby said basket may be adjusted laterally to and from the sleeves as desired. The guide rod 13 depends below the lower edge of the sleeve 15, and the wall of the rod is formed with an aperture 18 to receive a key 19, which key is preferably formedwith a triangular projection 20 to fit within the aperture 18 of the pipe and secures the key in applied position, the triangular form of the projection materially facilitating the removal of the key, as will be obvious. From the key 19 a flexible connection 21, preferably in the form of a chain, extends within the basket 10, being there connected to a ring 22 designed to encircle the hose, referably the lowermost layer thereof, as 0 early shown in Fig. 1.
The valve 5 is provided with a stem 23 which extends upwardly through the valve casing and is terminally provided with a disk head 24 designed when the valve is in full elevated or closed position to abut'the lowermost end of the guide rod 13. In this position with the sleeve 15 su ported by the key 19, it will be apparent that the lowermost edge of the sleeve is spaced from the disk head 24 of the valve stem, and furthermore,
that as the sleeves 14 and 15 are slidably mounted on the guide rod 13, the entire weight of the basket and contained hose is supported by the key 19.
With the parts constructed and in the positions described, the operation of my improved fire apparatus is as follows: The operator on desiring to utilize the apparatus will remove the hose from the basket 10 as the initial operation, this being accomplished preferably by grasping the nozzle of the .hose and drawing the same from the basket, the coiled lengths of hose following in succession. As the last coil is withdrawn from the basket, a pull is exerted upon the chain 21 with the effect to remove the key 19 from the guide rod. This releases the sleeves from their normal position on the guide rod, permitting the weight of the basket to force said sleeves downward causing the sleeve 15 to engage and depress the disk head 24 of the valve stem. This operation of the valve stem arranges the valve so as to cause its opening 7 to register with the inlet 8 of the service pipe, whereby water is admitted directly to the hose 9, as will be understood.
Having fully described and illustrated my invention, what I claim is:
1. A fire apparatus including a service pipe, a hose connected therewith, a normally the basket when released for movement to open the valve.
3. A fire apparatus including a service pipe, a hose, a normally closed valve arranged between the hose and pipe, a basket for containing the hose slidably supported above the valve, a key connected with the hose and arranged to support the basket in elevated position, and means carried by the valve to be engaged by the basket in the descending movement of the latter.
