HOISTING APPARATUS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HEINRIOH AUMUND, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Ohnistrasse 2, Cologne, lihenish Prussia,
Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoisting Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
This invention relates to hoisting apparatus of the general type known as loading bridge hoists, in which the load is supported and moved by ropes W iich extend from the winding-drums over suitable fixed guide pulleys and over guide pulleys upon a traveling block mounted upon a suitable boom or track, whereby the load may receive not only a vertical movement but also a movement of translation in a lateral direction.
The object of the invention is to provide suitable devices whereby not only shall the position of the load be exactly shown by an indicator in proximity to the hoisting machine, but the movement of the load shall, in part at least, be automatically controlled, so
that the change from the vertical movement to the movement of translation shall take place at the proper time without requiring the attention of the operator. At the same time the load is always under the control of the operator and the reversal of the movement, either in raising and lowering or in the forward and backward movement is deter mined by the operator.
The invention will be more fully explained hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings in which, for purposes of illustration and explanation of the nature of the invention, it is illustrated as embodied in a convenient and practical form.
In the drawings, Figure 1. is a view, partly in elevation and partly in outline representing enough of a hoisting apparatus to enable the invention to be understood, the traveling 5 block or boom truck, the track therefor, the guide pulleys and hoisting ropes being omitted; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a diagram illustrating an arrangement of electrical connections and circuits which may be employed. Fig. 4 is a detail view in front elevation of the dial indicator and contacts. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section thereof.

apparatus of the character referred to herein and need not be shown or further described. The two drums a and b may be mounted as usual upon the driving shaft 0, which may be driven from any suitable motor, as c. As usual in hoisting mechanism of this character the hoisting ropes are Wound upon the respective drums in opposite directions and the drum a is fast upon the shaft 0, to rotate therewith, while the drum 1) is loose upon the shaft and may be rotated independently of the drum at, either in the same direction or in the opposite direction, so that the one hoisting rope may be paid out as the other is wound upon its drum, or that both hoisting ropes may be wound up or paid out together. The speed of rotation of the drum 1) may also be varied as usual. As a convenient means for driving the drum Z) in a direction opposite to that of drum a, and at the same or a different speed, a differential gear (1 ma be pro vided, the same comprising a disk or frame d mounted loosely upon the shaft 0 between the drums at and l) and provided with a brake rim (Z and one or more bevel gears (Z mounted upon radial axes in the disk or frame cl and each engaging with bevel gears a and I) carried by the drums a and b respectively. A brake e is provided to control the rotation of the disk or frame d and may be actuated by any suitable means, such as a solenoid E. The drum 1) may also be provided with a brake rim b to receive a brakef which, likewise, may be controlled by any suitable means, such as a solenoid F. A friction clutch 9 may be provided for the purpose of coupling the drum 1) direct to the shaft 0 when it is desired to drive the drum 5 in the same direction as the drum a. One member of such clutch may be formed in the end of the drum 1) while the other member may be secured to the shaft 0 to rotate therewith but free to be moved longitudinally upon the shaft into and out of engagement with the drum 1). Any convenient means for operating the clutch 9 may be employed. As rep resented in the drawing, the hub g of the movable member of the clutch is grooved circumferentially to be engaged by a fork g which is connected by a bell-crank lever g with the core 9 of a solenoid G.
The hoisting mechanism, as thus far described, is arranged to operate in the usual manner. The hoisting ropes being wound on the drums a and l) in opposite directions, as
stated, the brake is applied to the differential gear (1 to hold the same stationary and the friction clutch g is released, whereby the drums at and b are rotated in opposite directions either to raise or to lower the load as the case may be, suitable provisions being made for the reversal of the direction of rotation for lowering. For the translation of the load in a lateral direction, the brake e is released, permitting the differential gear to turn freely, and the clutch g is closed so that the drum 1) is driven from the shaft 0 in the same direction as the drum a. Suitable reversing mechanism permits the load to be moved outward or inward as may be desired.
The present invention is more particularly concerned with the means for indicating the position of the load at any time and for effooting, automatically, the change of movement of the load from the vertical to the lateral, or vice versa, without requiring the at tention of the operator, as well as for stopping the movement of the load at a predetermined point. To accomplish these results the movements of the drums are caused to effect a change in position of an indicator, the movement of the drums to raise the load being made to indicate the height to which the load is raised, and the movement of the drums to effect lateral movement of the load being made to indicate the extent of such movement. The movements of the indi cating devices is made to effect, through suitable intermediate mechanism, the shifting of the drum-controlling means in such manner as to cause the desired change from vertical movement of the load to lateral movement, or vice versa, 01' to stop the movement of the, load, at all points predetermined by the operator. In the construction and arrangement of the devices for this purpose chosen for illustration in the drawings, the drum a is provided with a gear a which engages a pinion a held from axial displacement in suitable bearings. The hub of the pinion a is threaded interiorly to form a nut for engagement with a screw-threaded rod a movable longitudinally in suitable bearings provided therefor. Similarly the drum 1) is provided with a gear 19 which engages a pinion 6 also held from axial dis placement in suitable bearings, the hub of the gear forming a nut for engagement with the longitudinally movable rod 6 In conven ient proximity to the hoisting mechanism is provided a suitable frame or standard h, upon the face of which may be marked a scale. An indicator frame it is movably supported upon the frame or standard it and is provided with suitable pointers for cooperation with the scale. Mounted in the indicator frame h is a loose drum i which is connected, through suitable gearing, with a revolving pointer i arranged to cooperate with a suitable dial i A cord or wire 7c, having its ends connected respectively with the longitudinally movable rods a and b is passed from the rod a about a guide pulley 7c, suitably located, a guide pulley 76 at the bottom of the frame or standard h, a guide pulley k at the top of the frame or standard 71, thence with one or more turns around the loose drum or wheel 2', about a guide pulley 7:: at the top of the frame h and a guide pulley 7C5 at the bottom of the frame, to the longitudinally movable rod b.
It will now be obvious that when the two drums a and b are rotated in opposite directions for the raising or lowering of the load, the one rod 01/ is displaced longitudinally in one direction while the rod 6 is displaced longitudinally in the opposite direction, the one therefore drawing in at one end the cord or wire k as much as it is paid out at the other end. Such movement of the cord or wire causes a rotation of the loose drum or wheel 'i and, through the suitable intermediate gearing, a movement of the pointer 2" about its axis to an extent corresponding to the vertical movement of the load. This movement of the wire, of course, occasions no vertical movement of the indicator frame h in either direction. On the other hand, when the two drums at and b are rotated in the same direction, the rods a and b will be displaced longitudinally in the same direction, thereby taking up or paying out the cord or wire is at both ends. This movement of the cord or wire occasions no rotation of the wheel or drum i and therefore no movement of the pointer i with respect to the dial 2' but does occasion a vertical movement of the indicator frame h, up or down, as the case may be, in the frame it. Accordingly the movement of revolution of the pointer i with respect to the dial 11 indicates the extent of vertical movement of the load. and the movement of the indicator frame h with respect to the frame or standard 72, indicates the extent of lateral movement of the load.
The movement of the indicating devices, whether effected by the means described or by some other means suitable for the pur pose, is taken advantage of to control, through suitable intermediate mechanism, the movement of the drums, especially for the purpose of changing the movement of the load from vertical to lateral, or vice versa, and for stopping the movement of the load. As already explained, the drums may be controlled through the brake and clutch mechanism referred to, such brake and clutch mechanism being controlled, in turn, in the present instance by electro-magnetic devices, such as the solenoids E, F and G. The electrical connections for the control of the solenoids are arranged in a manner which is well understood and need not, it is thought, be explained in detail herein. The several connections to the solenoids are indicated at e, f and q respectively, the connections between the same and the source of electromotivc force, (not shown), being controlled by suitable contact devices governed by the movement of the indicating devices. Thus, on an adjustable block mounted upon the dial "L are a circuit closer 6, arranged to be opened or closed, as the case may be, by the pointer i, to open or close the circuit of the solenoid E, and a circuit closer (y also arranged to be closed or opened by the pointer i, to close or open the circuit of the solenoid G. Thus, when the load has reached the predetermined height for which the ad 'ustable contact i has been set upon the dial i the pointer i, acting upon the circuit closer, will cause the brake e of the differential gear d to be released and the clutch g to be closed, thereby changing the movement of the load from the vertical to the lateral. For the purpose of stopping the further movement of the load, as at the proper points in its lateral move ment, suitable circuit closers or contact de vices Z and. or may be secured adjustably upon the frame or standard h to be actuated respectively by the moving indicator frame 72/ as it reaches the predetermined limit of its movement in either direction. The opening and closing of the main motor circuit or of the branch circuits to the several solenoids by the operation of such contact devices will be understood without further explanation or illustration herein.
In Fig. 3, there is illustrated in diagram an arrangement of electrical connections and circuits which may be employed in connection with the indicating devices for actuating the solenoidsE and G. These two solenoids are here shown as being in circuit upon a single line, being arranged. in series with each other so that both are energized at the same time by the closing of the circuit in said line. In this arrangement the brake e is spring actuated so that the brake is constantly applied and is only released when the solenoid E is energized which acts in opposition to the spring power to release this brake. The solenoid G when it receives current, is adapted to couple the loose drum 1) directly to the shaft 0. Thus when the current is on, both drums will rotate in the same direction and when the circuit is open the two drums are run in opposite directions, as already 6X- plained. To open and. close this circuit a relay 1 may be provided in circuit upon a secondary line the current for which may be supplied. from a battery as illustrated. In this secondary line the devices m and Z are switches which are arranged to be opened and. closed by the indicator frame 77/. Moreover, the pointer i and circuit closer c are also represented in this circuit as a switch upon the indicating frame it; and besides this latter switch &
another switch 3 is provided which has two positions, being adapted to close the secondary circuit in one position when the switch m is open and to close the secondary circuit in its other position when the switch Z is open. The operation of these electrical connections is as follows. The position of the parts in Fig. 3 indicates the position in whicl'i they have been brought by the last movement of the motor and drums. The position of the contact or switch Z is now adjusted in accordance with the lateral movement of the load desired, and the position of the contact 71 is adjusted in accordance with the extent of vertical movement desired. The motor is then started and as the relay is open and no current is flowing through the magnets E and G the motors are run in opposite directions and will therefore cause the indicator i to turn. The operator now moves the switch 8 so that when the indicator t" is electrically connected with the contact i current will flow in the secondary circuit notwithstanding the open switch m as follows; from the battery through the indicator t and contact i to the switch 8 to the relay r and back to the battery. As soon as this circuit is closed, and this will occur as soon as the indicator it reaches the contact i the relay 1" will erate to close the circuit through the so enoids E and Gr which will have the effect, as already explained, of causing the drums to rotate together which, as will be obvious, will cause the indicator frame it to move downwardly until it opens the switch Z in which case the secondary circuit will be broken and the relay again opened. This, of course, will open the circuit through the solenoids E and G.
It will be understood, also, that the particular devices shown and described herein exhibit but one embodiment of the invention, and that other devices and arrangements of parts may be employed as convenience or the necessities of different application of the invention may suggest.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a hoisting apparatus, the combination of hoisting drums, means for controlling the operation of the drums, and devices actuated by the movement of the drums to govern the operation of the controlling means, substantially as described.
2. In a hoisting apparatus, the combination of hoisting drums, means for contro ling the operation of the drums, a moving part driven by the movements of the drums, and devices actuated by said moving part to govern the operation of the controlling means, substantially as described.
3. In a hoisting apparatus, the combination of hoisting drums, means for controlling the operation of the drums, an indicator actuated by the movements of the drums,
and the switches m and Z l and devices actuated by the indicator to govern the operation of the controlling means, substantially as described.
4. In a hoisting apparatus, the combination of hoisting drums, electro-magnetic devices to control the operation of the drums, an indicator actuated by the movements of the drums, and contact devices actuated by the indicator to govern the operation of the electro-magnetic devices, substantially as described.
5. In a hoisting apparatus, the combina tion of hoisting drums, a revolving indicator, a wheel or drum connected to the indicator, a cord or wire having a turn about the wheel or drum, and devices intermediate the ends of the cord or wire and the hoisting drums respectively whereby the cord or wire is drawn in and paid out by the movements of the hoisting drums, substantially as described.
6. In a hoisting apparatus, the combination of hoisting drums, an indicator to show the extent of movement of the drums when rotating in opposite directions, and actuating means intermediate the indicators and the drums, substantially as described.
7. In a hoisting apparatus, the combination of hoisting drums, an indicator to show the extent of movement of the drums when rotating together, an indicator to show the extent of movement of the drums when rotating in opposite directions, a cord or wire in operative engagement with the indicator, and means intermediate the ends of the cord or wire and the hoisting drums, whereby the cord or wire is drawn in and paid out as the drums rotate, substantially as described.
8. In a hoisting apparatus, the combina tion of hoisting drums, a frame or standard, a movable indicator frame, a revolving indicator on said indicator frame, a wheel or drum connected to the revolving indicator, guide pulleys, a cord or wire having a turn about the wheel or drum, and means intermediate the ends of the cord or wire and the hoisting drums, whereby the cord or wire is drawn in and paid out as the drums rotate, substantially as described.
