sirE'PnnN A. BELL, O BNEW 'ltolW N, on 1.o.
Letters Patent No. 92,252, dated July 6, 1869.
IlllIPROV-'EMENT IN TURBIN WATER-WHEBS. A
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of thename.
To all whom it may concern.- n
Be it known that I, STEPHEN A. BELL, of Newtown, Hamilton county, Stute of Ohio, have invented certain new nudy useful Improvements in Wolter- Wheels; und I do hereby declare thefollowing to be n. sutliciently t'nll, clean', :tud exnct description, to ennble one skilled in the nrt to which my invention appertains, to multe and use it, reference being had to :illy [under :ill conditions ot' size ot'wheel, head of walterfdvc.
Second, in o. peculiar construction of the rim and buckets ot' the revolving wheel, particularly 'designed -und adopted to be used in connection with the cover :alluded to in the foregoing chiuse.
' In the accompanying drnwings- Figure l is nn oxiul section of cover, wheel, and attachments. I
Figure 2 is a. perspective view ofthe cover detached.
Figure 3 is at perspective view of the wheel.v
Figure 4 is :t view ot' n. portion of the wheel, showing the shnpe of bucket.
The shutt A, to`whic tnehed, is supported by the custonnuy spider B,l and revolves-on the nigger-head or inverted step, O,- which is provided with 'n set-screw, I), for the requisite udjustinent of the wheel;
The rim E of the wheel is connected to the hub F by the buckets G.
lhut portion of the buckets G,'which'is below the foce ofthe 'hub F, is of the customm'yform, but in addition to this, I project n. portion of each blade uplh`l the revolving wheel is ztty of the preceding clause, the bucket-extensionl and ward, and join this extension (whichis designated in the drawing by letter H) to a."ho`rizontal flange, I, of the saine widthns the 'extension H. vThis extension is devised to receive the direct impact of the water before it is permitted to act upon the bucket proper, G.
The cover of the wheel l(see tig. 2)v has o onge, J, against the under side of which the flange I cornes in contact, and u pit, K, is formed within the cover,
whose bottom is in close contact with theV upper face Around the sides of the pit'K, conduits, L, are
formed, lwhose outer sides, which project above the face of the cover, ore concentlic with the cover, and the inner sides, which extend vboth above and below thc foce of the cover, eccentric. The top plates of the conduits incline from' the mouth to the face of' the eover.
The mouth o f'- each conduit is'gover'ned by a sliding gute, M, which, under all conditions, is capable of governing the ow of wetter to the wheel. The customary penstock is built round the wheel above the cover.
The provision of the pit K and connecting-conduits L,\ gives al free central entry for the water, and a direction ot' current toward the buckets horizontally.-
The extension H, and flange I,in connection'with rim E, form a. pocket, in which the direct force ofthe 1. The provision ofthe pit K,` and connecting-conduits L, in the stationary cover, constructed and operatingsubstantinlly inthe manner and for thel purpose specified.
2. .1n the described combination with the elements hengel, for the purpose described... n' K l In testimony of which invention, I hereunto set my hand.
