CLOSURE-FITTING.
Patented May a5, 1909. j
Appicaton led December 28, 1907. Serial No. 408,434. Y
To all whom/it may concern:
Beit known that "I, CHARLES C. PFFER, o*Rochester, ini'the county oi Monroe and State of`New York, have invented'certain new an'duseful- Improvements in Closure- Fittings and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,l and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and to the reference-characters marked thereon.
My present invention relates to closures of the general type' employed for instance to control the ports of'A vessels, inspection or other' openings in containers oi dierent kinds and V'in -many kindred Ways, and it has for its object to rovide a iitting of this nature that may e used to advantage in any ofthese connections, but which will embody a construction particularly suited to such requirements as are exacted through its use as aclosure for the openings in brew ing tanks for the purposeoi aliording a means of obtaining ready access to the interior, or for observing conditions therein. As the internal pressure oi these tanks is often considerable", my' improvements are directed particularly toward 4providing a ntting easily attached' to the tank and a lidv or cover that willb'eA both strong and tight though capable of being urn'flastened- Awith comparative ease.
To these and other ends theinvention conl sists in certain improvements and combinationsy of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification. j
lln the drawings: Figure 1 is a top plan view oi/a fitting constructed in accordance withfny invention and illustrating bnc embodiment thereof. Fig. 2 is a central section on the. line 2-`2 oi Fig. 1 showing the manner in which it is secured to the tank.
Similar reference characters in the severa ngures indicate similar parts.
Tanks of the character indicated are usually constructed of sheet or plate metal and the portions thereof illustrated and indicated by the numeral 1 are adjacent the aperture 2 therein which is of a size suitable for the purposes intended. lnserted in the aperture is a preferably annular frame 3 of substantiallythe same diameter as the said opening, and provided with a iiange 4` en-f gaging upon one side of the plate, a gasket or any' suitable packing 5 being lnsertedl between the two. Y The frame is threaded eX- teriorly as at 5a and may be screwedv into the tank, if convenient, though this -is not altogether necessary as I provide a securing ring or member 6 threaded thereon above the flange `to move relatively thereto and en-l gaging the plate 1 upon the oppositeside therefrom through the medium of the gasket or packingA memberl 7: The frame and securing ring are turned relatively to tightly clamp the former Within the lopening by IIneans of suitable Spanner wrenches engaging within the notches 8 and 9 respectively. The portion'of the frame rejecting eXteriorly of the tank is provi ed with an outwardly extending lug 10 while projecting inwardly from the inner sides of the frame is a i shoulder 11 forming a seat for the closure 12.
rlllhe latter is in the present instance hinged to the frame through a pivotal connection 13 joining a lug 1t thereon with the lug 1U and comprises `an annular bodyportion iitted ywith a transparent panel 15 vheld against a shoulder 16 by a ring 17. A downwardly projecting annular iiange 18 on the closure narrower than the seat engages and rests upon the latter-at its extreme inner edgeV only, the portions oi the body adjacent said gange being reduced and rounded as at 19. The object of this construction is two told: First, the lugs 10 and 14; remove the pivotal center to a point at which the radius or' Inovement is made gre'aterand the closure yapproaches the opening in the trame more.J squarely, and-secondly z-The vflange bearing only at the edgesoi the seat Lexerts its pressure u on a smaller area of a gasket 20 arrange on thel latter and compresses 1t with greater intensity to prevent the escape ofA gases un er pressure. v
As a means of fastening the closure inplace l employ a plurality of devices fastened to the securing ringo and having both a pivotal .and rectilinear movement relatively to the closure sothat they may be quickly swung into position and then easily. tightened into engagement with great mechanical power but a short range of movement. To these ends l provide the closure with a plurality of j equidistantly disposed extensions 21 having countersunk jsoclrets 22 therein and open slots 23 leading therefrom. Pivoted at 24m slots 25 in the securing member 6 are a plus essary at any rality of corresponding and equidistan'tly arrangedbolts 26 adapted to swing'within' the slots 23 and carrying, threaded thereon, wing nuts 27 having lower faces seating within the 5 sockets 22. ,It will be seen that the closure `10 ets and thebolts then quickly, swing out- Wardly, as shown at B, and the closure freed for raising. If the fastening devices are equidistantly disposed, as herein described, only a partial rotation of the securing ring is nectime to bring them all into osition for register withv the portions ofp the closure to be engaged and the compressibil- ,ity of the packings 5 and 7 will always permit of this slight movement.
I claim as my invention: 1.` The combination with a frame having an inwardly extending seat on its inner sides andan outwardly extending lug on its outer side, of a closure hinged to the lug to swing within the frame and haying a flange on its under side narrower than the seat and engaging upon the inner edge thereof.
2. Thecombination with a frame provided with a flange, a securing member arranged 30 above the flange and movable relatively thereto, and a closure fitting Within the frame, of a fastening device lcarried bythe securing member and engaging the closure.
3. vThe combination With a frame'provided with a flange, a securing member arranged above the flange, and movable relatively thereto and a closure tting within the frame, of a fastening device carried bythe securing member and engaging' the closure and 40 having both a pivotal and rectilinear movement Arelativel thereto., l 4. The com ination Wit'ha frame provided with a flange, a securing member arranged *abovel the flange and movable relatively thereto and a closure fitting Within theframe and provided with an open slot., of a bolt pivoted to the securing member and movable withiny the slot in the closure and a nut threaded thereon and engaging :they latter.
5. The combination with a frame provided with a flange, a securing member arranged above the flange and ,movable relatively and provided with a socket and an open slot leadlng therefrom, of a bolt ivoted to thesecuring member and movab e within ,the slot and' seating within the socket in this latter.
6. The combination with an annular frame provided with a flange and a securing ring able relatively to the latter when rotated; of a closure'pivoted to and fitting within the frame and rovided .with a pluralit Vof open slots and a astening device carried y the securing ring and movable selectively within the slots. j 7. The combination with an annular frame provided with a flange and a securing ring carried thereon above the flangeV and movable relatively to the latter, when rotated, of a closure pivoted to and fitting Within the frame and provided `with a plurality of .open slots equidistantly placed and a lurality of equidistantly disposed fastening evices carthe slots...
in the closure and a nut threaded thereoncarried thereon above the flange and mov-'- ried by the securing ring and movable withinthereto and a closure fitting Within the frame 8.' The combination with an annular frame I' provided with `a flangeand a securing ring threaded on the frame above the flange, o'f a closure pivoted to land fitting within the frame and having a plurality of equidistantly disposed sockets on its periphery ando en slots leading thereto, a plurality of equiistantlydisposed bolts ivoted to the securing ring and movable within'the slots inthe closure and nuts threaded on the bolts andlseating Within the sockets. r
