VEHICLE-SPRING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
rammed May 25, 1909 Application filed Septemberll, 1908. Serial No. 452,627.
To all 10720771 it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lewis G. BL'RNET, a citizen of the l nited States, and a resident of the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle- Springs, of which the following is a specification, reference, being had to the accompany ing drawing, forming a part hereof.
This invention relates to improvements in springs intended particularly for use in motor driven vehicles such as automobiles, although, of course, the improvements may be applied in other vehicles than those-Which are power driven. improvements are'to be incorporated have been illustrated and described by me in an application for U. S. Letters Patent, filed August 24, 1907, and bearing the Serial No.
389.945. In that application, I have shown what I refer tov as inner leaves for the pur- I pose of checking the undue expansion of the spring, and I have also shown clamps to secure the inner leaves to each side ofthe spring in embers against which they lie.
The ob ect of the present invention is to provide a simple and, inexpensive means for other on either side of the center of the spring.
In the drawings to which reference will now be had, I have illustrated a convenient and practical embodiment of my invention,
showing it applied to the spring.
In said drawings, Figure l is aview in elevation of the s )ring. Fig. 2 is a detail view showing the clamps farther apart than in Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is a detail plan view, showing the improvements on a. :u'gerscale.
The spring shown is substantially double elliptic in shape, .havingexternal members a and l) and internal members c and (Z; For a more detailed descriptionof the spring-referones should be had to the application above The s rin 's in which the' applied re of which is arranged on one side of the center and the other upon the other side 'of the center and both of which are adapted to embrace the inner leaves and the members c and (1'. These clamps may of course be of any suitable construction. --\.s illustrated in the drawing, each clamp comprises a U-shaped member a with a cap piece 0 fastened theret by nuts. It will be obvious at once that by changing the position of the clamps, the st illness of the spring may be varied.
'The cap pieces 0 are threaded to engage right and left-handedthreads respectively. formed upon an adjusting member 7) having an enlarged head 1, the latter being provided with flat faces in order that it may be conveniently turned by a Wrench. The head is embraced by a y'oke's so that the adjusting member p may be held fronrmovmg longitmlinally and yet bcpermittcd to I'Otillc under the action of a wrench or other tool engaging the head I. g
The operation of adjusting the clamps will be readily understood from the foregoing. although it may be briefly summarized as follows: The nuts holding the cap pieces 0 to the U-shaped pieces 11- are first loosened sufficiently to permit the clamps to he slid longitu'dimilly of the leaves. Then with a wrench or other suitable tool applied to the head 1' the adjusting member is. turned in one direction or the other, according as the clamps are to be separated farther apart or drawn in toward the center. When the proper adjustment of, the clamps has been made, the nuts are again tightened to retain them fast about the leaves and the members 6 and d.
I claim as my in ention:
In a vehicle spring having two external members and two internal mvnbers. the combination of leaves upon the internal members, a clamp on each side ofth'e center of said members, and means to move the clamps longitudinally of the leaves to the desired position.
and means to move the clamps longitudinal! of the leaves to the desired position.
3'. In a vehicle spring having two external members and twointernal members, the combination of leaves upon the sides of the internal members facing the external members, a clamp on each side of the center embracing the internal members and leaves, and means to move each clamp toward or from the center by an equal distance.
4; In a vehicle spring having two external members and two internal members, the
combination of leaves upon the internal members, a clamp upon each side of the center of said members, and a member embodying a right handed and a left handed thread to move the clam s longitudinally of the leaves to the desire position.
' 5. In a vehicle spring having two external right and left handed thread, a head for turning the same and a yoke embracing the head and secured at the center of the internal members.
This specification signed and witnessed this 5th day of September, A. D. 1908.
