To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, SToTEN A. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hub-Boring Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the-annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, in whichy Figure 1 is a partial longitudinal vertical section of the machine showing the hub of a Wheel properly connected and in position to be reamed. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2--2, Fig. 4. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3 3, Fig. 4. Fig. 4 is a top view. Fig. 5 is an end view looking toward the left hand end of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the mandrel casing, its clamp also showing the mandrel receded, also showing the mandrel moving clamp. Fig. 7 is a view showing the mandrel moving clamp open and the mandrel moved forward. Fig. 8 is a view showing the sliding collar and the clamp holding head in proper relation with reference to the mandrel showing the clamp removed. Fig. 9 is a detached view of the clamp showing the same open and in position to release the mandrel. Fig. 10 is a vertical section showing a portion of the housing also showing the sliding collar and the clamp properly located on the mandrel and the mandrel in proper relationshi with reference to the housing collar and c amp.
The present invention has relation to hub boring machines and it consists in the different arts and combination of parts hereinafter escribed and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
In the accompanying drawing, 1 represents the bed-plate which is formed of any desired size and is sup orted in proper elevation by means of the egs 2, which legs may be formed integral with the bed-plate or attached by the lug bolts 3 as shown in Fig. 1.
Upon the bed-plate 1 is located the sliding table 4, which sliding table is rovided with the downward extending I ange 5, which downward extending flange is located through the slot 6. For the purpose of reducing the friction as between the bed-plate 1 and the sliding table 4 the top or upper face of the bed-plate is provided with the ribs 7 and the flange 8, upon which ribs and flange the sliding table rests. At one side of the bed-plate is located the downward extending flange 9 in which fiange is j ournaled the screw 10, said screw being provided with the hand wheel 1 1, the screw is located through a screw threaded aperture formed in the flange 5, and by rotating the screw 10 the table 4 Will be moved u on the bed plate, the movement of the ta le being in opposite directions When the screw threaded shaft is rotated in opposite directions; that is to say by rotating the screw 10 in one direction the table 4 will be moved, say to the right, reference being had to Fig. 5 and when moved in the opposite direction will move to the left, reference being had to Fig. 5, by which arrangement the table 4 can be brought into proper adjustment for the purpose hereinafter described.
Upon the table 4 is pivotally mounted the mandrel housing 12, by means of the pin 13, which pin is located in the aperture 14. The mandrel housing 12 is provided with the flanges 15, which flanges are provided with the slots 16, through which slots the clamping bolts 17 are passed, said clamping bolts extending through the flanges, and into screw threaded apertures formed in the iable 4, this feature being best illustrated in For the purpose of holding the housing 12 together with the different parts carried thereby in fixed position upon the table 4, after said housing together with the different parts carried thereby has been brought into vproper adjustment, the clamp 18 is provided, whichA clamp is provided with the screw 19, said screw being for the purpose of properly binding by means of the clamp 18, the housing 12, the table 4 and the bed plate 1 together, so there can be no relative movement as between said parts, after the housing 12 together with the different parts carried thereby has been placed in proper adjustment.
To the bed-plate 1 are attached the arms 20, which arms support and carry the ring 21, which ring is for the purpose of holding the relatively rotatable and intermediate ring 22, which ring 22 is .provided with the ilange 23, which flange abuts against the ring 21. To the ring 21 is attached the ring 24, which ring abuts against the ring 22, by which arrangement the ring 22 is held in proper position with reference to the ring 21. 1t will thus be seen that the rings 22 and 24 are iixed with relation to each other but independent of the ring 21 and the ring 25 now to be described, fin their movements. Upon the ring 22 is rotatablyT mounted the ring 25, which ring is provided with screw threads upon one of its faces, which screw threads vmesh with the hub clamping bars 26, said hub clamping bars being slidably mounted in the brackets 27, which brackets are connected to the ring 22, by means of the clamping bolts 28 or their equivalents. When it is desired to clamp the hub the ring 25 is rotated independent of the ring 22 which rotation moves the clamping bars 26 endwise and when the ring 25 is moved in one direction it moves the bars 26 toward a common center, by which arrangement the hub 29 is properly centered and clamped.
It will be understood that the bars 26 l must be provided with curved or segmental ian'ges 30, upon one 'of their faces so that said lcurved or segmental flanges will mesh with the screw threads formed upon the face of the ring 25.
For the purpose of providing means for snugly clamping the hub 29 the ring 25 may be provided with the apertures 31 in which apertures may be inserted the end of a bar to 'rovide a suitable lever.
` pon the spokes of a wheel is seated the ring 32, and said ring snugly clamped to the spokes by means of the clamping screws 33. The outer ends of the brackets 27 are provided with the integral heads 34, which headsv receive the screw threaded bars 35, receiving the adjusting nuts 36 and the binding nuts'37. The screw threaded bars 35 are for the purpose `of adjusting the ring 21 together with all the parts carried by said ring into true parallel position with reference to the ring 32.
It will be understood that the boxings that are seated inthe hub Vvary as to their taper, and the aperture or bore of the hub must necessarily taper, so that the boxing will snugly rit in the hub and'in order to provid-e for the various degrees of taper to =correspond with the various degrees of taper vof the boxes to be seated in the hub, it is necessary to provide a means for adjusting the angularity of the mandrel 38, whichl adjustment is made by pivotally attaching the housing 12, to the table 4.
To the mandrel 38 is attached the boring Y t'ool 39 which of course may be of any -desire'd construction reterence being had to the particular kind `of work ldesigned to be ac c'omplished. In this particular instance the tool shown is. what f. might be termed a reamer, butfor other purposes different tools may be attached.

The mandrel clamp consisting of the pivoted jaws 40'is placed in the position illustrated in Fig. 6, said jaws being provided with the semi-circular grooves 41, which semi-circular grooves receive the flange 42 as best illustrated in Fig. 10. The iiange 42 being` formed at the end of the housing 12. clamp jaws 40 are provided with the'lateral se1ni-circular flanges 43 over which iianges the sliding collar 44 is placed when it is desired to hold the clamp in position to move the mandrel endwise as hereinafter described. ln some instances it is desirable to open the clamp jaws so as to release the mandrel and permit the same to be moved endwise independent of any reaming or boring action, and in order to provide for this partial opening of the jaws the anges 43 are provided with the reduced portions 45 by which arrangement the jaws can be partially opened when the sliding collar 44 is moved a distance suicientV to allow said -collar to cover only the reduced portions 45 of the flanges 43. For the purpose of provid# ing a means forV entirely-'removmg the clamp jaws 40 for any purpose the sliding collar 44 is provided with the notch 46 and when said notchis brought into alinement with the screw 47 or its equivalent the collar caribe slid a suiiicien't distance upon the housing 12 to clear the reduced portions 45 ofthe flan-ges 43. 1t will be understood that the collar 44 must be rotatablyV and sli-dably mounted upon the housing 12. Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a hub boring machine, the combination of a bed plate, a sliding table mounted upon the bed plate, a mandrel housing carried by said table and pivotally mounted thereon, a fixed ring carried by said bed plate, a rotatable ring carried by said fixed ring, said ring having screw threads upon one of' its faces, a ring provided With brackets, sliding bars carried by said ring said sliding bars provided with curved flanges, said curved flanges adapted to mesh with the screw threads upon the screw threaded ring, a ring adapted to be connected to the spokes of' a vehicle Wheel, and means for connecting said ring with the rotatable ring carried by the bed plate, a mandrel carried by the mandrel housing, and means for imparting longitudinal movement to the mandrel by the rotation of the ring carried by the fixed ring secured to the bed plate, substantially as and ior the purpose speciiied.
