UNITED STATES PATEN T OFFICE.
EDWARD L. SMITH AND OLIVER M. DAVIS, OF MARION, INDIANA.
DOOR-FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWARD L. SMITH and OLIVER M. DAVIS, citizens of the United States, residing at Marion, in the county of Grant and State of Indiana, have invented certaln new and useful Improvements in Door-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification. Our invention relates to an improvement in a door fastener, and the object is to apply our invention particularly to sliding doors, which will stop and hold each door as they come together and prevent the two doors from jamming into each other.
A further object is to provide means for releasing the fastening means from the door whereby the door can be opened.
The invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a view showing the invention applied to the upper casing of a door and the unlocking mechanism applied to one of the doors Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the locking means; Fig. 3 is a view of the plate in which the locking mechanism engages for locking the door; Fig. 4 is a sectional view through the rod for unlocking the mechanism and the plates for securing the rod to the door; and Fig. 5 is a detail.
A represents the doors, which are of the usual form of sliding doors, and B is the door casing in which the doors A slide in grooves 1, 1 in the top rail of the casing. At or about the center of the top rail a recess 2 is formed. A bar 3, having flanges formed at its ends as at 4 is adapted to be received within the recess 2 and held therein by the flanges 4, which are secured to the top rail by means of screws. Secured transversely to the bar is a spring plate 5, which is also received in the recess, the ends of the plate having lugs or projections 6 formed thereon. The lugs are beveled at their outer edges and form an abrupt shoulder at their inner edges. The lugs on the ends of the plate are formed on opposite edges of the plate. The spring plate is cut away at both ends as at 7 and extends out over one edge of each door as at 8, one side of the plate extending over one door on one side and over the other door on the opposite side. Secured on top of each door is a lock plate 9 in which an opening 10 is formed, and recesses are formed in the doors as at 11 Specification of Letters Patent.

in alinement with the openings in the plates. Mounted upon the doors are rods 12, one rod being placed on one side of one of the doors and the other rod being placed upon the opposite side of the other door. Similar plates 13 are secured to the door at intervals, upon which the rods are mounted and received over the rod and upon the plates 13 are cap plates 14, which are provided with a groove 15 through which the rod slides, both the cap plates 14 and the plates 13 being secured to the door by screws. Stops 15 are formed on the rods which limit the upward and downward movement of the rods as they come in contact with the upper and lower surfaces of one of the cap plates 14.
The 0 eration of the device is as follows: As the dhor or doors are drawn for closing, and when the door reaches the closed position it will be engaged by the lug 6 on the spring plate 5, the lug entering the opening 10 in the plate 9 on the door. The door is thereby locked from moving in either direction, and can only move outwardly until it reaches the lug when it is prevented from moving. The other door when closed is locked in the same manner. When it is desired to release the doors, the rods 12 are forced upwardly until the ends of the rods engage the protruding portions 8 of the spring plate 5, which forces the plate upward, releasing the lugs from engagement with the lock plates 9, which permits of the door or doors being opened. The object in having one rod on one side of one door and on the opposite side of the other permits of the doors being opened from either side, that is, one door can be opened from one room and the other door opened from the other room, so that access between two rooms can be obtained by the operation of one of the rods when the doors are locked.
It is evident that more orless slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of our invention, and hence we do not wish to limit ourselves to the exact construction herein set forth but:
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a door fastener, the combination with a door casing, of a spring plate connected thereto, doors, means on the plate and engaging the doors for holding them in locked position, and means adapted to engage the plates for releasing the doors.
2. In a door fastener, the combination with a door casing, doors, of a spring plate mounted on the casing, locking plates on the doors and means on the spring plate engaging the locking plates for holding the doors, and means engaging the spring plate for releasing the doors.
3. In a door fastener, the combination With a door casing, doors slidably received in the casing, a bar connected to the casing and received in a recess therein, a spring plate received in the recess and connected I to the bar, locking plates on the doors,
means on the s ring plate adapted to engage the locking p ates for holdlng the doors and means for operating the spring plate for means on the spring plate engaging the locking plates'for' holding the doors, and rods on the doors for engaging the spring plate for releasing the doors. 7 In testimony whereof We aflix our signatures in the presence of two Witnesses.
