REAR AxLn non nuromonnans- Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed July 16, 1908. Serial No. 443,872.
Patented May 18, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK C. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rear Axles for Au-,
tomobiles, of which the following is a specification-Q v My invention relates to an improvement in rear axle construction. for automobiles employing shaft drive.
The objectof the inventionis to provide a one-piece axle of great strength and rigidity, having simple and convenient provision for receiving and supporting the gear casing.
Another object of the invention is that this gear casing supporting section of the axle, being the intermediate portion thereof, shall be of superior rigidity, so as to constitute an element of increased strength'at this point, rather than of weakness.
' Another object of the invention is that the gear case supporting section of the axle shall permit of the ready insertion and removal of the case, so that standard axles and cases may be readily interchangeable in case of .gear casing arc substantially as The axle is complosed of a one-piece solid I port. The ends or horizontal portions of the axle are horizontally hollow to provide for the reception of the shaft ends. The ends of the axle are exteriorly turned'to provide bearings 3 for the spring seats.
4 represents the gear casing of spherical form, preferably, and consisting of the sec-- tion 5 with a removable cap 6. The section 5 is provided With a flange 7 through which pass the bolts 8 for securing the casing to the.
solid arch 2. In' this way, the gear case is suspendedfrom and protected by the arch, WlllCll is the solidest portion This construction also provides for the greatest possible space between theroad and-the bottom of the casing.
9 represents the tubular front end of the casing for receiving the transmission shaft from the front ofv the vehicle. Having described my invention, I cla1m 1. A one-piece axle consisting of a solld of the structure. I
forging, havlng its ends longitudinally hollow, and having a solid intermediate arch, a rovided' with a flange-bolted to the arch, w ereby the casing is accessibly sus ended from and su escribed.
one-p eceaxle consisting of a sohd forging having its ends longitudinally'hollow, and having a solid'intermediate arch, and a gear casing secured within said arch, substantially as described.
