BAIL-EAR AND COVER-HOLDER FOR FAILS.
Application filed September 28, 1908.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrn Dis'rnn, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing in the city of Hamilton, in the county of State of Ohio have invented a new and useful Improvement in Baihljars and Cover- Holders for Pails, of whicn the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in bail ears for slip cover pails or vessels.
The object of my invention is to produce an improved construction of bail ear for sheet metal pails or vessels which will serve the double function of a bail ear and also as a means for sealing or holding the cover on the vessel.
My invention consists in a sheet metal pail or vessel, the body of which is provided with bail ears having outer shells furnished ith radial ribs to strengthen the shells and to afford means for ready attachment of a cover fastener, in connection with a slip cover having its flange provided with cover-fastener attaching devices, preferably integral slitted loops, and cover fasteners and seal therefor, passing through the attaching devices on the cover flange and bail cars, so that the cover cannot be surreptitiously removed without detection.
The invention also consists in the novel devices and in the novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown and described and more particularly set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a sheet metal pail embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a plan view, partly in horizontal section. Fig. 3 is a de tail vertical section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
In the drawing 1 represents a sheet metal pail or vessel having its body 2 provided with bail ears 3 secured to the body by double or other folded. seams 4. Each of the bail ears 3 is provided with an outer shell 5, having a flange 6 embraced by the seam 4, and provided with a series of radially extending ribs 7 Specification of Letters Patent.

and intermediate depressions 8, to strengthen this outer shell and afford openings 9 under the ribs through which a cover holding device The outer shell 5 of the bail ear has the customary eye or opening 10 to receive the hook 11 of the bail 12.
The slip cover 13 has a flange 14 which surrounds and embraces the upper end 15 of the body 2. The cover flange 14 is provided at diametrically opposite points with cover holder or fastener attaching devices 16, preferably consisting of outwardly bent integral loops formed by parallel slits 17 in the cover fiange.
The cover fasteners or holders 18 preferably consist of seal wires 19 passed through the attaching devices 16 on the cover flange, and through the corresponding attaching devices on the bail ears formed by the radial ribs 7 on the outer shell 5 of the bail ears. The cover holder or fastener wires 19 have their ends intertwisted at 20 and embedded in a suitable seal 21, preferably consisting of a soft metal rivet 22 and Washers 23, the seal also serving to attach the shipping card 24 to the vessel.
1 claim:
1. The combination with a vessel body, of a cover therefor having its flange furnished with integral fastener attaching loops, and bail ears provided with integral ribs and openings under the ribs for the cover fasteners to pass through, and cover fasteners, substantially as specified.
2. The combination with a vessel body, of a cover therefor having its flange furnished with integral fastener attaching loops, bail ears provided with integral ribs and openings under the ribs for the cover fasteners to pass through, cover fasteners, and a seal for the cover fasteners, substantially as specified.
