Description

D. N. MYERS. RILWAY TIE AND RAIL FASTENEB..
APPLIUAT'ION FILED FEB. 23. 1909.
921 ,871 Patent-ea May 18, 1909.
Acitizen of the United States, residing atv UNITED STATES PATEN DANIEL N. MYERS, oF"ToLEDo, onio.
RAILWAY-TIE AND RAILFASTENEIL at. oanevif Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 18, 1909.
Application sied February 2s, 190e. semi No. 479,656.
l'ocll whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DANiEL N. MYERS, a
Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Ties and Rail l Fasteners; and Ido hereby declare the following t be a. full, clear', and exact descri tion of the inyention, such as will enab e others skilled in the art to which it appertains to inake and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved tie and rail fastener and it embodies the novel combination, arrangement and` details of constructionl hereinafter shown, described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings illustra- .tive of my invention Fi re 1 is ai side eleva,-
` ,tion of one endy of a tie with a T-rail seythe same, close one cured in position thereon by means of my limproved fastener; Fig. 2 is a plan View of the rail being broken away to dishooked lend of the fastener bar by Whichit is h eld in lace; Fig. 3j is a bottom plan view of one o the laterally extending u upon the tie.
to the details 1 indicates a cast aving the raisedabutment .2
eferrin metal. tie
i against which the rail rests and is held from spreading toward the end of the tie, the inner -face of the abutment conforming in shape to that of the rail side. liliitendingr through the abutment is a set screw 3 the end of'l which engages the base flange 4 of the rail 5 the ra-il being capable ofslight adjustment vertically should it become necessary to shim up the rail. 0n opposite sides of the tie immediately below the rail when in position thereon are laterally ex- 'tending lugs or projections` 6 and 7, the
lower faces of which are grooved at 8 and the forward portions of the grooves are inclined at 9 as shown.
10 is a U-shapcd fastener -bar having hooked ends 11 and 12 to engage the base liiaiige of the rail, and the side portions 13 of this bar are bent to assume an inclined position in contact with the inclined portion t) of the grooves in the lower ,face of the`projections 6 and 7. By this constructionas the fastener bai' is drawn toward the end of the tie the hooked"eiids thereof having been preif'iously hooked to the ruil base, as`sliown,
. the rail will be firmly held to the abutment by means` of a suitable socket. wrench which engages the head of the same.
What l claim. is-
l. cast inetiiltie-liaving :i raised abutnieiitfor a rail and provided with lateral projections positioned below the rail when in place u on the tie, a U-shaped fastener bar having liooked ends to engage the base flange of a ruil. the fastener bal' being! guided by the lateral projections, and a strainingr means for the fastener bar. substantially as dc- Q. A cast iiietal t-ie liiivinr :i raised abutuieiit for iiv rail and provi ed with lateral projections bcneatli the rail when iii position upon the tic. the iiiidei" faces of thc projecbai' having hooked ends to engage the buse flange of a rail and having inclined portions (wo-acting with tlie'iiicliiied under faces of the lateral projections. :iiid a strainingr means for thc fastener bar. substantially as described.
2l. cust iiictiil tic haring' :i raised :ibutnicnt for u rail and provided with lateral projections beneath tlic rail wlicu iii position upon thc tic. thc uiidci' fui-c.` of thc projections provided with 2grooves which are iiiclincd. ii Usliiiped fastener bar having hooked ends to ciigagc the base tiaiige of a iiiil and haringl inclined bent portions co-act- .ing with the inclined grooves of the projec- 'tions being inclined, and a U-sliaped fastener tions. and a "sci-ew directed :it an inclinationv through thc cud face of t'lic tie to engage thc fastener bai'. substantially as described. iii tcstin'ioiiy whereof` l lici'ciiiito affix my signature; in prcscncc of two witnesses.
l NIEL MYERS. W tiiesses:
