To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,Fnnnnr.1o1; A. HUMME, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Elizabeth, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Ties, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to metallic tie and rail fasteners, and the object of the invention is to provide a novel metallic support for rails and a fastener in connection with said support that will positively retain rails thereon.
My invention aims to eliminate wooden ties as a rail supporting medium, and to substitute strong and durable metallic ties having novel rail fasteners for preventing lateral and vertical displacement of rails mounted upon said ties.
To this end, my ties are constructed from sheet metal, cut, sheared and bent to the desired shape, and in connection with each tie, means are provided for retaining the same in the ballast or road bed of a steam or street railway.
The ties are of such a simple construction also the fasteners used in connection with the same, that they can be easily and quickly laid with unskilled labor, and it will be impossible for the ordinary traffic of a road bed to dislodge the ties or cause the fasteners to become loose to that extent as to cause wrecks.
The invention will be hereinafter considered in detail, and then specifically claimed, and now reference will be had to the drawings forming part of this applicatiom-Wherein there is illustrated the preferred embodiments of my invention, but it is to be understood that the structural details thereof can be varied or changed without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a tie constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is a plan of the same, Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of a portion of the tie, Fig. l is a view of one end of the tie, Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view of the tie, Fig. 6 is a view of the opposite end of the tie, Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a wedge forming part of the rail fastener, and Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a wedge lock.
My tie is constructed of sheet metal, cut, sheared and bent to form an oblong structure having a base plate 1 and side walls 2, and inwardly projecting top flanges 3, the confronting edges of said flanges forming a longitudinal slot extending from one end of the tie to the opposite end thereof. The base plate 1, has the end thereof bent downwardly, as at 1, to engage in the ballast of the road bed and prevent displacement of said tie. The end walls 2 at one end are bent inwardly, as at 5, to support the flanges 8, while adjacent to the opposite end of the side walls 2, said side walls are provided with openings 6. The top flanges 3 adjacent to one end are cut and sheared, and the material bent upwardly to form outer rail fasteners 7, while the top flanges 3 contiguous to the opposite ends of said flanges are cut to form inner fasteners S.
In connection with the structure just described, fastener bar 9 is used, said bar being of a width to fit in the structure and approximately the same length. One end of the bar 9 is bent downwardly, as at 10, to engage the base plate 1, while the opposite end thereof is cut and bent to provide a hook-shaped tongue 11. The bar 9, intermediate the ends thereof is cut and bent to provide an outer fastener 12 and an inner fastener 13, these fasteneres longitudinally alining so as to extend upwardly between the confronting edges of the top flanges 3 and cooperate with the inner and outer fasteners 7 and 8, for embracing the base flanges 1 1 of rails 15.
To secure the fastener bar 9 in position, wedges 1G and 17 are used, together with locks 18. A- lock is placed in the openings 6 against the downwardly bent end of the fastener bar 9 and then the wedge 16 is driven into the opening 6, one end of the lock bent to engage the wedge, as at 19, while the opposite end is bent, as at 20, to engage the outer side of the tie. Another lock is placed in the hook shaped tongue 11 of the fastener bar, and the wedge 17 driven through said tongue, said wedge bearing against the inwardly bent end 5 of the walls 2. One end of the lock is then bent as at 21 to engage the wedge 17, while the opposite end is bent as at 22 to engage a tie, said locks 16 firmly locking the wedges in position, while the wedges retain the fastener plate in position to cooperate with the inner and outer fasteners for the rails 15 upon the tie.
It is apparent from the inner construction of the tie that provision is made for expansion and contraction and that the tie can be tamped just as easily as an ordinary wooden tie.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, is
1. The combination with rails, of a metallic tie adapted to support said rails, said tie comprising a base plate having depend ing ends, side walls said side walls having retaining vthe upper edges thereof bent inwardly to provide top flanges, and the top flanges cut to provide inner and outer fasteners for engaging the base fianges of said rails, a fastener bar adapted to fit in said tie and having one end thereof bent downwardly to engage said base plate, while the opposite end is bent to provide a hook-shaped tongue, said bar being cutto provide inner and outer fasteners to cooperate with the first mentioned fasteners in holding said rails, locks arranged at the ends of said tie, a wedge arranged in the side walls of said tie for engaging the downwardly bent end of said l I l bar and adapted to beretained therein by the bent ends of said lock, and a wedge extending through the hook-shaped tongue of said bar and adapted to be held therein by the bent ends of the other of said locks, substantially as described.
2. The combination with rails, of a me tallic tie adapted to support rails, said tie comprising a base plate, side walls, said side walls having the upper edges thereof bent inwardly to provide top flanges, said flanges being cut to provide inner and outer fasteners for engaging the base flanges of said rails, a fastener bar arranged within said tie and having fasteners adapted to cooperate with the first mentioned fasteners for holding said rails, wedges arranged at the ends of said tie for engaging the ends of said fastener bar, and means for locking said wedges in position.
