To all, whom it may concern: I
Be it known that l, CHARLES W. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Haverhill, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Trolleys, of which the following is a speciiication.
rlhis invention relates, particularly, to poletiolleys of electric railways an d it consists in i the combination with the head of the trolleypole and the trolley-wheel or sheave of a bearing-block for each journal of said wheel, both of which are detachably held on said head and each of which has an oil-chamber or reservoir with provision for opening and closing it and with a passage leading from it to the wheel-journal and its bearing in the block for the purpose of securing lubrication of said journals and bearings, all substantially as hereinafter described.
The invention is illustrated in the acconianying drawings forming part of this specication.
Figure l is an elevation at one side of the pole, in part; the pole-head and wheel. Fig. 2 is a plan view of one half of the wheel and the pole-head and of a bearing-block and a horizontal section of the other half thereof, dotted line 2 2, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a vertical edge view of a bearing-block and a similar view of the wheel, in part, and of the portion of the pole-head holding said block. Fig. is a vertical edge view of the pole-head and the upper adjacent part of the pole. Fig. 5 is a vertical edge of a bearing-block detached and in detail. Fig. (i is a vertical section of a bearing-block detached and in detail, dotted line 6 6, Fig. 1.
In the drawings, A is the upper portion of a trolley-pole having a head B in upward extension thereof.
C is the grooved trolley-wheel or sheave, having, on its opposite sides, similar axial journals D, D.
E, E are the opposite bearing-blocks for the wheel-journals D, D.
The upward extending portion of the polehead B is of forlr shape, Fig. 4, and its opposite and parallel tines or sides F are of a corresponding forli-shape and the inner edges Cr of its tines H are in parallel vertical planes at right angles to the inner and outer faces J, K of the tines or sides F. block E has a similar groove L along its outer parallel and opposite upright edges M and these several grooves L are of suitable width and depth for the blocks to be entered between the inner edges G of the tines H and so entered to iit said edges and to overlap the portions of the inner and outer faces J, K of the tines F, which are adjacent thereto, Fig. 2. Again each bearing-block at its 2 lower edge has parallel downward projecting g ear-pieces N to embrace the sides F of the l pole-head B at the inner and outer faces J K thereof, w ien the blcclrs are on the pole-head B as has been explained and thus by means of pins, bolts or other such like fastenings as at C entered therethrough the blocks can and will be secured in position against accidental displacement, while they are free to be detached at pleasure.
