To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH F. MAnsoLArs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Making Nire Coils, of which the following is a specification accompanied by drawings, forming a part of the same, in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a wire coiling machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a detached view. of the rotating arbor.

My present invention relates to a machine for coiling wire to be used in making wire fabrics, and especially to that class of wire coiling machines which employ a rotating mandrel and a stationary wire guide inclosing the mand'el, and having a spiral slot which controls the pitch of the coil while the coil is bein wound on the mandrel. in ma chines of this class the shape and diameter of the coil is determined by the mandrel, a fiat coil being produced by winning the wire upon a flat mandrel; a round coil upon a.
round mandrel, and a triangular coil upon a triangular mandrel; any desired change in the size and shape of the coil being accomplished by employing a mandrel of the desired size and shape in cross section.
The object of my invention is to increase the efiiciency of this class of machines which I accomplish by means of the construction and arrangement of arts as hereinafter described and pointer out in the annexed claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings 1 denotes a bed or table upon which the operative parts of the wire coiling mechanism are mounted, 2 is a head in which a rotating spindle 3 is mounted, said spindle being rotated by means of a gear 1 and pinion 5 on a shaft 6, to which rotary motion is imparted by a belt pulley 7.
Adjustably mounted upon the table 1 is a stand 8 cut apart on one side and clamped together by a clamping bolt 9, and firmly held in the stand 8 is a spiral wire guide 10 consisting of a tube provided with a spiral slot 11 formed in the guide 10 of the desired pitch of the coil of wire. spiral slot 11 is solid and is inclosed in the stand 8 and firmly clamped in position by the clamping bolt 9.
Inclosed within the spiral wire guide 10 is a mandrel 13 which in the present instance is -flat for the purpose of coiling a flat coil. The mandrel. 13 is detacha ly held in a cylindrical head 14 which is journaled within the solid portion of the wire guide 10 and is provided with a shank 15 adapted to fit a concentric hole in the end of the spindle 3 and be held in place by a set screw 16 or other suitable means. 'ihe mandrel 13 is inserted in a slot 17 in the cylindrical head 14, and is held in place by a couple of pins 18, 18, which may be driven out and the mandrel eX- changed for other mandrels of different size or shape. The end of the cylindrical head 14 next the mandrel 13 is convex, as shown at 19, Fig. 3, and when the mandrel and wire guide are in place the latter is adjusted longitudinally in the stand 8 to cause the con vex end 19 of the mandrel head to project into the end of the spiral slot 1 1, as shown at 19 1, so that the wire as it is being coiled around the revolving mandrel in this portion of the spiral slot will be crowded away from the edge 20 of the slot and prevent the binding of the wire against the edge of the slot. The solid portion of the wire guide 10 which is clamped in the stand 8 furnishes a bearing for the cylindrical head and receives any lateral strain due to the pull of the wire upon the mandrel. The entire mandrel and head can be withdrawn through the open end of the vire guide and the mandrel replaced by other mandrels in order to vary the size and shape of the coil by simply driving out the pins 18. All the mandrels to be used in the heat 1%, however, are provided with flattened shanks ada ted to enter the groove 17 and they are a so rovided with holes in alinement with the ho es in the mandrel head 14 to admit the pins 18.
I do not wish to confine myself to the specific construction of the driving mechanism as shown, as any convenient means of rotating the mandrel may be employed.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. in a machine of the class described, the combination with a supporting framework, and means for rotating a mandrel, of a stand adjustably held on said framework, a wire guide adj ustably held in said stand and comprising a tube, provided throughout a portion of its length With a spiral slot, a mandrel inolosed in said guide, and a rotating head carrying said mandrel and j ournaled in said Wire guide.
2. In a machine of the classdescribed, the combination with a stand for a Wire guide, of a Wire guide, said wire guide consisting of a tube having one end adjustably held in said stand With its opposite end projecting from the stand, and provided With a spiral slot, a mandrel head j ournaled in said Wire guide, means for rotating said head, and a mandrel carried by said head and inclosed in the Wire guide.
3. A Wire coiling machine, having a stationary tubular guide, a mandrel head j ournaled in said guide, a mandrel detachably held in said mandrel head, and means for rotating said mandrel head, with said mandrel head detachably attached to. said means of rotation. 1

The combination With a tubular Wire guide provided With a spiral groove, of a mandrel head journaled in said guide, and a l mandrel carried by said head and inclosed in the Wire guide, With the end of said mandrel head convex and extending into the ath of the Wire as it is fed through said spiral slot.
5. The combination With a tubular Wire guide, provided With a spiral slot, of a mandrel head journaled in said Wire guide and provided With a convex end rojecting into the path of the Wire, a mandrel carried by said head, and means for adjusting said Wire guide relatively to said mandrel head.
6. A Wire coiling machine, having a stationary tubular guide With a portion of its interior surface cylindrical, a mandrel head journaled Within said cylindrical portion, a mandrel detachably attached to said mandrel head and held central Within said guide, a rotating shaft, and means for detachably attaching said mandrel head to said rotating shaft.
