Specification of Letters Patent.

Mum-IN W. HILL, citizens of the United 3 States, residing at Jacksonville, in the county of Cherokee, State of Texas. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Engines; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in steam engines and it has more particular reference to. rotary engines employing a sliding abutment.
In connection with an engine of the above general type the invention aims as one object, to provide novel reversing valve mechanism.
The invention aims as a further object to provide a rotatable body carrying a piston of novel construction comprehending means for taking up wear.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel device of this character wherein the sliding abutment is operated from the shaft rotated by the cylinder.
It is furthermore an object of the invention to provide a novel device of this character that will be simple in construction, ellicient in practice and economical to manufacture.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the novel arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views and in which Figure 1 is a side elevationof an engine constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail view illustrating the reversing valve controlling mechanism.

6 is a sectional view illustrating a detail of the invention. Fig. 7 is a section on the line 7-7 of Fig. 5, illustrating the construction of the engine cylinders. Fig. 8 is a view in elevation illustrating certain details of the invention.
In the drawings 1, denotes the engine bed which supports the cylinder 2. Mounted in the bearing 3 and projecting through the cylinder 2 is a shaft 4t, having mounted thereon the pulley 5. \Vithin the cylinder the shaft has fixed thereon the piston 6 as is well known. Projecting from the periphery of the piston at opposed points are the wings T, each comprising outer sections 8 and intermediate section 9. These wings contact *ith the side of the cylinder 2 and the con- 3 tact is made steam tight by the packing 10 carried by the intermediate sections 9.
Positioned on the cylinder 2 is a steam chest 11. having in its lower portion the casting 12. This casting is provi led with two ports 13 and Li communicating with the in terior of the cylinder The steam chest 11 has in communication therewith the supply pipe 15 leading from any suitable fluid source. testing on the casting 12 is a sliding valve 16 having a port 16. At its limit of movement in one direction this valve has the port 16 in register with the port 13 and closing port 14; and when in its opposite limit opens port 14 and closes the port 13. This valve is the reversing valve and has secured thereto a stem 17 projecting to the exterior of the chest. The exterior end of the stem has suitably pivoted thereto an end of a lever 18. The opposite end of the lever 18 is pivoted to an arm 19 projecting from the strap 20 embracing the eccentric 21 fixed to the shaft 4. As the shaft 4 rotates it will cause the valve 16 to reciprocate for the purpose to be hereinafter referred to. Piv0t ally secured to the lever 18 intermediate its length is the end of a rod 22, the opposite end of the rod being pivoted to an ordinary hand lever 23. In order to hold the rod 22 against undue lateral movement, the guide 2 1 is provided said guide being secured to the cylinder 2. This structure provides a manually operated means for reversing the movement of piston, as will, it is thought, be apparent from the drawings. t may be well to state that in order to pass any obstruction, the various levers and rods are suitably curved to overcome the same.
Movable transversely of the cylinder and positioned between the parts 13 and 14 is a sliding abutment 25. In its movement this abutment 25 passes into a chamber 26 arranged to one side of the cylinder. The chamber 26 is of such size as to allow the abutment 25 to be entirely removed from within the cylinder when the abutment is at the limit of its outward movement. The abutment 25 is provided with a stem 27 projecting to the exterior of the chamber 26. The outer end of this stem is suitably pivoted to a rod 28. The lower end of this red 28 is fixed between two levers 29 pivoted to the engine bed 1. Each of these levers 29, intermediate its length is provided with an outward segmental bend 30 to embrace a trip pulley 31 fixed to the shaft 4:. This pulley 31 is provided with an annular groove 32 having an abrupt turn 33 at opposite points of the pulley. Traveling within this groove 32 are the pins 3%. By this arrangement at every half rotation of the shaft 4 or the pulley 31, the sliding abutment 25 will be withdrawn from the cylinder to permit the passage of the wings 7 of the pulley 6.
The relation of the offsets or turns 38 in the pulley 31 with the eccentric 21, is such that when the abutment 25 is withdrawn the sliding valve 16 will close the steam supply port in the casting 12 thereby relieving the wings 7 of any steam pressure until the abutment has returned. As the abutment re turns the valve 16 is returned to its proper position.
The cylinder is provided at a point opposite the steam chest 11, with an exhaust port 35.
We claim In an engine of the type set forth, the combination with aslidablereversing valve its stem and the engine shaft, of a reversing valve operating mechanism, comprising an eccentric carried by said shaft an eccentric strap surrounding said eccentric, an arm carried by said eccentric strap, a lever pivoted to said arm and to said stem, a pivoted hand lever and a link pivoted to said hand lever and to said first. named lever.
