To all whomit may concern:
Be it known that I, CHESTER H. THORDAR- SON, a citizen of the United States, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinors, have invented certain new and useful.
Improvements in Alternating-Current Regulators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of ref erence marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
s invention relates to improvements in electric current regulators and refers more particularly to such regulators as are adapted by inductive impedance to regulate the current ofan alternating current circuit.
Among the objects provide an exceedingly simple compact and efficient regulating device for this purpose and the invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
I have shown my regulating device as aplied to an apparatus for generating X-ray lights, it being introduced into the generating circuit in a manner to act by impedance to vary the amount of current passed through the circuit and o crates in such manner that the value of t e current may be graduall raised or lowered and the intensity of t e X-ray light generatedthereby correspondingly varied. vice, being shown in connection with X- ray light apparatus Willb'? hereinafter'dd scribed in this connection and relation but it will be understood that my improvements may be employed for other regulating purposes to which it may be adapted.

The impedance regulating mechanism herein shown comprises a coil H in series with the primary side of the high potential transformer, a core I which, as herein shown, is movable into and out of the coil, and a suitable frame, designated as a Whole in Fig. las J. The frame, designated by J in Fig. 1, com prises, as shown in the other figures, two side lates J J, and an intermediate laminated ody 5 consisting of plates 9' of magnetic material (shown in detzu in Fig. 5) confined be tween said side plates by means of traverse bolts j y (Figs. 2 and 4). The said side the intermediate plates J of the'body are cut away to provide upwardly opening recesses, the recesses of the interme- -d1ate plates being designated as j in Fig. 5, to receive the coil'l-l which is confined between flanges 9' extending laterally and oppo'sitely from the side plates of said frame.
The core I slides on the upper surface of the laminated body J into and out of the coil H, as indicated by full and dotted lines in Fig. 1. Said core is also of laminated con struction, it comprising a plurality of thin plates or lamina t oi magnetic material (Figs. 3, 4 and 6), confined together between side plates 1 I fixed together by means of bolts i 7? extending transversely between and through said plates. Said plates tare shown as tapered at both ends from their lower bearing surfaces to their top surfaces to provide the variable area of the cart of the core which moves into and out oft e coil and also to provide at the other end of'the core an extension adapted to be engaged by an operating part to give movement to the core.

The tapered arrangement of the core and metal to metal'contacts of the core with the frame enables the current to be gradually varied within close limit, thus avoiding objectionable fluctuation or abrupt variation in the regulated current. Means may be provided for locking the core in any position, of adjustment. Means for this purpose is herein shown and consists of a locking screw M having screw-threaded engagement with a bracket J on one of the side platesof. the frameand bearing at its lower end against the adjacent guide bar K,
the latter for this purpose having a slight vertical movement so as to be pinched downwardly against the bottom of the rabbet occupied thereby in the plate I ofthe core.

An important advantage of the regulating mechanism herein described arises from the fact that the quantity of the current may be gradually'varied within close limits, thereby producing uniform variations .of the X ray efiectsin the tube, and free from abrupt Said regulating apparatus pro duces particularly good results when employed in alternating currentjcircuits, inasmuch as both the character of the current and the manner of its regulation conduce to a regular and uniform X ray effect in the tube, thereby producing a ray not only well adapted to a given or predetermined use, but also one that is free from fluctuations and de-. viations from a standard or desired eflect.
I claim as my invention 1. A regulating device for alternatlng current apparatus comprising a coil, a frame upon which said coil is su ported, and a core, the core and coil being re atively movable so said core being of variable cross-sectional area in the part thereof which moves into and out of the coil.

the core and coil being rellitively movable so as to move'the core into and out of the coil, said core being of variable cross-sectional area in the part thereof which moves into and out of the coil, and the core being so arranged relatively to the frame that throughout a large part its range of adjustment it completes with the frame a continuous iron path for the magnetic lines emanating therefrom.
