STEPHEN JAROSS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
DEVICE FOR DELIVERING AND RECEIVING MAIL-BAGS FROM TRAINS AND THE LIKE.
Application filed February 13, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be, it known that I, STEPHEN JAROSS, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Device for Delivering and Receiving Mail-Bags from Trains and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful mail bag receiver and deliverer embodying my invention, showing a portion of a car and showing, in dotted lines, the position of the receiver in the act of receiving a mail bag. Fig. 2 represents a plan view of a portion of the device for swinging in the receiver and deliverer, in detached position. Fig. 3 represents a partial plan view and partial sectional view of a portion of the car showing the receiver and deliverer in position. Fig. 4 represents a plan view of the means for receiving the mail bag from the car and for delivering another thereto. Fig. 5 represents an end elevation of the device showing the operation of the catch. Fig. 6 represents a perspective view of the mail bag clamp. Fig. 7 re resents a portion of the device showing t e catch in a different position from that shown in Fig. 5. Fig. 8 represents a sectional view of a portion of the receiving means and a portion of the clamp. Fig. 9 represents in elevation, a portion of the car showing a different means for pivoting the receiving and delivering apparatus.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings. I have found in practice that in mail delivering and re ceiving apparatus, it is necessary to suitably support the mail bag from the car and to provide means for receiving the same there from and in constructions now in use where the mail bag itself is grasped, owing to the Specification of Letters Patent.

speed in which a train is running, that the impact will often injure the mail bag and in some instances entirely destroy the same, thus injuring the mail itself, in many in stances. In the present instance I have shown a construction for overcoming these difficulties and for carrying out my invention, but it will be evident that the arrangement of the parts may be varied and other instrumentalities may be employed which will come within the scope of my invention.
1 designates a portion of a car having the usual opening comprising the door. Pivotally supported upon the car at a suitable point with respect to the door thereof, is a frame or support 2 which may be of any desired construction and which carries a pin or hook Pivotally supported upon the support 2 is a catch or look 4 against which bears a spring 5 adapted to normally hold said catch crloch at a suitable point or position above the hook 3. Connected with or forming part of the look i is an arm 6 for purposes to be hereinafter explained. Projecting forwardly from the support 2 and at a suitable point thereon is a pin 7 which is preferably slightly depressed at 8 to form a seat for the mail bag clamp.
9 designates a latch suitably carried by an arm 10 and so placed with respect to the pin 7 that when the clamp which carries the mail bag strikes the same, the said latch permits the passage of the clamp after which said latch falls to the position seen in 1, and prevents the escape of the clamp, and mail bag carried thereby, from being released from the seat 8, said latch 9 being provided with a suitable stop to prevent improper outward movement thereof.
Suitably supported at the station or other place, at which it is desired to deliver and receive mail, are the tracks or guides 11, which, in the present instance, are supported on the uprights 12 and which are inclined as best seen in Fig. 1 and the ends of said tracks, at which the mail bag and clamp will first pass are inclined outwardly as at 13, as seen in Fig. i, in order to provide that the mail bag supporting clamp will be positively directed to the proper position with respect to the tracks or guides 11. Leading downwardly from the other' end of said tracks or guides, if desired, 1 provide the inclined or curved tracks 14. suitably supported and having cut-away portions as at 15 for the ease of removal of the clamp as will be hereinafter described. guides 11 are the bars 16 upon which is adapted to be supported, a mail bag clamp carrying the mail bag which is to be delivered to the car.
17 designates the mail bag clamp which is provided with the lugs 13 forming seats 19 on opposite sides of the body of the clamp and secured to or integral with the body, is the eye 20. Carried by the lower portion of the clamp is a bar 21 having a recess 2 therein, while hinged or otherwise secured to the said bar 21 is the bar 23 which can be connected and disconnected from the bar 21 by any suitable means, in the present instance, by the screws 24 carrying thumb nuts 25.
26 designates an opening in the body of the clamp which. is adapted to receive the pin 7.
The operation of the device is as follows The bar 23 is released from engagement with the bar 21 and the end of the mail bag 27 is placed therebetween and the bars are suitably reconnected, by manipulation of the thumb nuts 25. The support 2 on the car having been swung inwardly, the operator places the hook or pin 3 in the eye 20 of the support, it being understood that in order to place the pin or hook 3 within the eye 20 that it is necessary to move over the lock or catch 4 against the tension of the spring 5 and that after the eye 20 is in proper position, and the catch 1 released, it will be situated directly over the eye 20, as seen in Fig. 1 and will prevent the accidental escape of the clamp from the support. The support is now swung outwardly into the position seen in Figs. 1 and 3, and in order to properly hold the same in this position, I may desire to provide the pivot arms 28 and 29, one end of which is connected or supported and the other end of which is suitably supported so that when the arms are in the'position seen in Fig. 3, the support will be suitably held as the car advances forwardly in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 3. It will be seen that the said clamps are substantially in line to pass between the guides 11. As the car continues moving forwardly, the clamp and its support will pass between the guides and the arm 6 on the lock 4 will contact with one of the guides 11, which will actuate the catch 4 and move the same into the position seen in Fig. 5, so that the catch 4 is removed from a position above the eye 20. In the meantime, as the car continues its forward movement, the lugs 18 will be situated upon the outer side oi the guides 11, so that the latter will finally be situated in the seats 19. As the guides 11 are upon an incline, they will grad ually raise the clamp 17, remove the eye 20 from engagement with the hook or pin 3 and p the clamp 17 carrying the mail bag 27, will be released from the support 2 and will remain upon the guides 11, or by reason ofthe mo- In line with the bag as 30 with a suitable clamp 17 and has hung the same upon the bars 16. As the train continues to advance the pin 7 will be in a suitable plane to enter the opening 26 in this clamp 17, this position being understood from Figs. 1 and 7, and the upper portion of the clamp forces back the latch 9 into the position seen in dotted lines, Fig. 1, until the clamp has passed the latch which will then be lowered into the position seen in full lines, Fig. 1, will be seated in the seat 8 and carried along with the train, after which the support 2 can be swung in, carrying with it the bag 30 which is thus delivered to the car. Inorder to swing in the support 2, I may provide any suitable means and in Fig. 2, I have shown one form which consists of the links 31 and 32 connected with a lever 33 which by suitable manipulation will swing the support 2. I may connect the support 2 in any suitable manner with the car and in Fig. 9, I have shown another form from that shown in the other figures, which consists in providing journals 34 and 35 on the car, the operation of the parts being the same as hereinbefore described.
From the above it will be seen that the mail bag itself does not come in contact with any ortion of the device, that the clamp 17 can e quickly and expeditiously connected with the bag and that the delivering device can be'easily hung upon the bar 16 for the receiver.
It is to be noted that means are employed to maintain the frame or support 2 in its opened or closed position and in Fig. 2, I have shown one mechanical construction which will accomplish this result. Referring to said Fig. 2, it will be seen that a spring 36 is employed, which is provided with the lugs or equivalent devices 37 and 38, which are adapted to co-act' with the lever 31 to: lock the same in either its opened or closed position, so that the device cannot be accidentally moved due to the vibration of the caror other causes after it is once set in the desired position. 7
