ILIPROVEI BOTTLE-WASHING MACHINE.
Tho Schedule referred 4to in theme Letten Patent and making part of the lama.
To all whom it fmay concern Beit known that L'NrcHoLAs H. SmnnLLn, of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore, and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvemeuts in Bottle-Washing Machines; and I do hereby declare the following is a full and exact descriptiou thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part ofthis specification.
First, ot' a hollowmandreh connecting at one cud with a water-pipe; while the other end is provided with is withdrawn, thereby again shutting oli' the escape of the liquid.
I n the drawings above referred to l Figure I is a vertical transverse section of my improved machine, in line of the mandrel.
Figure II is a similar section through the rinsingbox.
Figure III is a plan.
Like letters of reference designate like parts in each of the figures,
A A is the flame of themachinc, of any suitable construction, forsupportiug the parts.
B is a rectangular tub or sink, elevated at a.' convenient height for receiving t-he waste water from the washing and rinsing-apparatus.
C is a hollow mandrel, to which motion may conveniently be imparted bymeans of a hel t,-D, connecting a pulley, f, ou the mandrel with a dlivingwheel, G, 'on
'a clank-shaft, H, operated by a treadle, 1,'and connecting-'rod j.
Otheupower and drivingmeohanism, however, may be employed, it' preferred.
The rearend of the lmandrel is'provided with a stuf ling-box and gland, k, whiclrreceives the end of a sta.- tiouary pipe, L, to which attac-hes the, hose m or other pipe, provided with a stop-cock, and connecting with a hydrant, orreservoir containing the washingliquid, elevated a. few feetabove the mandrel, to form a `sniicient head to force the water through the mandrel.
To the other end of thev mandrel attaches, in any 'suitable manner, a nozzle o r injectionpipe,.N, of dill ferent sizes, in the end of' which is inserted the'cleaning-brushes o, constructed ot' hair, or other suitable material.
The end of the nozzle-pipe is formed with a number of jet-oriices, s s, over which lits, so as to slide, n thimble, p, provided with aliange, q.'
' Back of this thimble, and surrounding the pipe N, is a spirall spring, t, which presses against t-hc former, and causes it to cover the j ets, except when overcome b the pressure of the bottle at, as will presently be explained.
The rinsing-device, before alluded to, consists of a series ot vertical jets, r, supplied with water by means of a main pipe, u, and suitable branches u' u', from which they extend. upward..-
Over t-hese jets is arranged a board, V, perforated to correspond with and receive the jets.
\V is a box occase, resting on-the board V, and divided into cells w, up through the bottom ofeach of which opens or extends one of the jets r, as clearly shown in Figs. II and III.
The operation of my improvements, thus constructed, is as follows:
The bottleto be washed is passed over the brush o, the mouth pressing against'the flange q ot' the valve, which slides it hack, so as to uncover the jets, and permit the water which ilow's through the mandrel to escape into the'hottle. This, in connection with the action ot' the rotating brush, cleans thevessel in the sh'ortestperiod of time, which is then placed inverted in one of the cells in the box W, with its mouth over the jet.
When this box "or case is filled, water is let 6u by turning a. stop-cock, when the jets, playing upward into the bottles, thoroughly rinse the same, when the case is removed, and an empty one' substituted, while the bottles in the former are left 'to dry.
What I claimfas my invention, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is
l. 'lhecombination of the hollow mandrel O, sta- '.tionary pipe L, nozzle-N, and brush o, arranged and operating as set'forth.
2. The arrangement of thc thimblewalve pand spiral spring t, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The apparatus as a whole, constructed aud-rranged as described.
