To all whom it mayconcern:
Be it known that I, JOHN C. Srunenon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certainnew and useful. Improvements in Overhead Trolleys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters ofreference marked thereon, forming part :of this specification. 7
My invention relates to overhead trolleys, and has for its objects: First. The construction of a trolley-wheel and harp therefor in such a manner that theniinimum of weight consistent with adequate strength is secured therein. Second. The combination with the trolley-wheel hub of a removable graphite lubricated sleeve, and a hollow, perforated, non-rotatable shaft bearing, upon which said sleeve rotates, having removable screw-plugs in the ends thereof the heads of which open.

In these drawings A is a trolley-harp, having arms A and A with their upper ends A and A turned inward toward the sidesof the trolley-wheel to be mounted therein, far enough to prevent the trolley-wire from passing down between the said upper ends of the harp arms and the wheel. This trolley-harp, I preferably construct of steel or other sultable metal plate, formed into shapein suitable dies. I can, however, make the harp of cast metal, but as this materially increases its weight I do not deemit so desirable. The

The trolley-wheel forming part of my invention, I make of duplicate disks D pressed out of thin sheet metal, each of said disks I) being so shaped in suitable dies as to form an outwardly projecting central sleeve d, and a peripheralfiange dt thereon, and in the bottom of the groove formed between these peripheral flanges d d, when the disks D D are placed together, I place a contact- .ring 0 made preferably of copper, secured in place therein. by means of rivets c, or by other suitable means, which operate to secure the disks D D and the contact-ring C firmly together. The hub of this wheel ispreferably made of a section of ordinary brass tubing out to the proper length and is secured in place by being firmly pressed into the outwardly projecting central sleeves d d of the disks D removable sleeve-bearing F, preferably made In this hub E, I secure a of a section of phosphor-bronze, or other suitable tubing, in w ich staggered holes f are made, and which holes are filled with a suitable graphite composition f. These holes f being preferably so located. in the sleeve F that'the end rows f of one set of said holes f, are cut at one'end of the sleeve F, and the rowsf of the op osite set of holes between the arms A and A of the trolleyharp A, I provide screw-plugs I I- adapted to be screwed into the threaded portions h h in the ends of the shaft-bearing H; these lugs I I are provided with. squared heads at adapted to engage the outsides of the trolley-harp arms A A the harp-arm A being provided with an opening a large enough to allow the shaft-bearing H to pass through it, and the harp-ar1n A with an opening only large enough to permit the screw-plug I to pass through it, so that When the shaft-bearing H is in place one end thereof is closed by the screw-plug I, which abuts against the end thereof and against the outer face of the harp-ar1n A, which is provided with a lug a which engages the head'i of the plug I and prevents its unscrewing. In lieu, however, of making the shaft-bearing H with the screw-plug I closing one end thereof, it can be bored out of solid metal, and the head i formed thereon integral therewith if desired, and for the purpose of conveniently filling the tubular chamber II in the shaft-bearing H, I preferably make an opening through the closure I and head i thereof, which I close by a small removable screw 77, whereby the chamber II can be readily filled with suitable lubricant. The opposite end of the shaft-bearing II, at the same time engages the inside face of the harp-arm A and the screw-plug I is then secured in place, closing the central opening in the shaft-bearing H, and firmly clamping the end thereof against the inner face of the harp-arm A On the shaft-bearing II between the ends of the wheel-hub E and of the removable sleeve F therein, and the inner faces of the harp arms A A I place contact washers J J which contact with both the ends of the hub E and sleeve F, The outside of the washer J contacting with the inner face of the bar -arm A, and the outside of the washer contacting with the shoulders a" a on the inner face of the harp-arm A and to the inside of the bar arm A I securea spring contact arm which extends upward into the recess between the shoulders a a on the said harp-arm and has an opening g therein embraclng the shaft-bearing H and engaging the outer face of the contact washer J with a s ring pressure, so that at all times, the wasfiers J and J, the wheelhub E, the bushing F and the inner faces of the harp-arms A A are maintained in close contact.
In view of the foregoing description of my invention, it is believed that its construction and operation will be clearly understood, without further description thereof.
Therefore having described my invention 7 so as to enable others to construct and use 1. The combination in an over-head trolley wheel, of two sheet metal disks, an outwardly )rojecting hub collar and an outwardly inofined peripheral flange on each of said disks, a peripherally eoncayed contact ring secured between said flanges and sup ported thereon, rivets through said disl-Ls under said flanges, a tube pressed into the hub collars on said disks so as to form a continuous Wheel-hub securing the centers of the disks together, and a bushing remoyably inserted in said hub, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination in an overhead trolley-wheel, of two metal disks, central collars thereon, inclined flanges on the peripheries of said disks, a contact-ring secured between the bases of said flanges, a tuli ular hub secured in said central collars, a removable graphite lubricated bushing in said tubular hub, and a non-rotatable hollow perforated shaft-bearing upon which said bushing rotates, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination in an overhead trolley, of a trolley harp, and a trolley-wheel consist ing substantially of two sheet metal disks having outwardly projecting central collars and peripheral flanges thereon, a contact ring secured between said flanges, a tubular hub secured in the central collars on said disks, and a removable bushing in the tubular hub, with a non-rotatable hollow perforated shaft-bearing on which. said bushing rotates, and means for closing the ends thereof adapted to secure said slia'ft-lwaring be tween the trolley-harp arms, substantially as set forth.

The combination of a tmlley-harp, a trolley-wheel consisting substantially of two metal disks, central collars thereon, inclined flanges on the peripheries of said disks, a peripherally concaved copper contact-ring secured between said flanges, a tubular hub pressed into the central collars on said disks, and a bushing rcniovtbly inserted in said. hub, a hollow perforated shaft bearing secured between the arms of the trolley harp, loose washers thereon contacting with the ends of the wheel-hub and with the inner faces of the trolley-harp arms, and a contactspring secured to one of the arms of the trolley-harp and extending along a recess therein so as to contact with the outside of one of said washers, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination in an overhead trolley, of a trolley-harp, and a trolley-wheel consisting substantially of two metal disks haying outwardly projecting central collars, and outwardly inclined peripheral flanges thereon, a contact ring riveted between the bases of said flanges, a tubular hub secured in the central collars on said disks, and a remoy able bushing in the tubular hub, with a non-rotatable hollow perforated shaft-bearing on which said bushing rotates, contact collars l (it) llO on said shaft-bearing at the ends of the wheel-hub and bushing therein, a contact spring secured to one of the arms of the trolley-harp and engaging the contact washer at one end of the Wheel-hub, and means'for closing the ends of the shaft-bearing adapted to secure it in place between the trolley-harp arms, substantially as set forth;
6. The combination in a trolley harp of one arm having a hole therethrough to receive a shaft-bearing, and another arm provided with inwardly projecting shoulders to engage the end of a wheel-hub on the inner face thereof having a recess there-between and having an opening in said recess through said arm to receive a screw for supporting one end of the shaft-bearing, and a contact springtsecured to the inside of said arm and extending into the recess between the shoulders on the inner face of said arm, substantially as set forth.
