barren-smiths SURN JACKSON, OF STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA MEANS FOR ADMINIS'IERING AIR 0R GAS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 11, 1909.
Application filed August 17, 1908. Serial No. 448,808.
To all whom it may concern: j
Be it known that 1, Scan JAoKsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stockton, in the county of San Joaquin, State of make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application. T
This invention relates to improvements in medical apparatus and particularly to a means for administering medicated gas orv air to the stomach for treatment of dyspepsia, sour stomach, bowel troubles'andisimilar complaints, the main medicament used being natural or water gas which contains salt, soda, iron, sulfur and magnesia, all of which elements are helpful for the disorders enumerated.
The object of the invention is to produce a means for administering the gas or air in such a manner as to permit it to be taken into the stomach in such quantities as may be desired in such a manneras to admit it easily and without distress to the patient. Also to produce a simple and inexpensive device for the purpose. These objects I accomplish by means of a tube having a mouth piece, a cock regulated gas or air inlet thereto, a liquid inlet into said tube havingjalift valve therein, and an air pump for drawing liquid and gas into said tube and discharging it through said mouth piece whereby the liquid will be gasified or aerated as it is taken into the stomach; also by such other and further construction and relative arrangement of parts as will more fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claim. I
In the drawings similar characters of ref erence indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete device. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the device. Fig. 3 is aside elevation of a gas storage tank.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings 1 designates a standard having a projecting support 2 maintaining a tube 3 having a removable mouth piece 4, said tube being connected with a gas or air inlet tube 5 having a regulating cock 6. If gas is to be used a flexible tube 7 may be connected with a jet 8 or with'a storage tank 9 (Fig. 8). The lower end of the tube 3 is provided with a liftfvalve 10 while 11 is an air suction pump connected with said tube 3 intermediate said valve 10 and tube 5.
To use the appliance the operator immerses the valve 10 in any desired liquid such as water, coffee, tea, milk or other desired drink and then inserts the mouth piece 4 into the mouth and operates the pump 11. With the u ward motion of the pump 11 it draws into t e tube 3 a quantity of this liquid through. the valve 10 and a quantity of the gas or'air through the tube 5. Then with the downward motion of such pump '11 it mixes the liquid and gas or air together and they are discharged through the mouth piece 4 into the mouth of the operator and thence swallowed into the stomach.
The mouth piece may be removable as shown by 4 hence one appliance may be used for several peoplewithout fear of contagion.
For sterilizing the appliance I have provided a funnel 12 which may be screwed into the bottom of the valve 10 and then the appliance would be inverted and filled through said funnel with any desired sterilizing element such as hot water or similar sterilizer.
- The tank 9 may be portable for supplying the air or gas to any person or persons desiring it.
The cock 6 is used to control the amount of gas or air admitted to the tube 3.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have produced such an appliance as substantially fulfils the objects of the invention as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and referred construction of my invention stil in practice, such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and useful and desire to se- T In testimony whereof I afiix my signature cure by Letters Patent 1s:
