Description

Fay 7 i N PETERS. FHOTO-LTIHOGMPHER. WASH NGTDN D C 1321.112111 ctililrr.
tnitmi Staten Lette/rs Patent No. 92,087, dated .Tune 29, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT -IN TURBINE WATER-WHEELS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the salme.
V.To whom' tt may concern:
Be it known that I, J nains N EWMAN, of Portland, in the county of Ionia, and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Turbine \Vater-Wlieels; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective view, with gate `closed.
Figure 2 is the'same, with the gate open.
Figure 3 is a perspective of the cylinder, with buckets. f Figure 4 is a plan view of the wheel, without gate, and one-half Yof cap removed.
Figure 5 is a horizontal section of bearing.
Figure 6 is a verticaly section of the same.
Figure 7 is the lever and sleeve for operating the gate.
Likeletters indicate like parts in each figure.
lhe nature ofthisinvention relates to au improvement in the construction of turbine water-wheels, with central discharge; and consists iu a new construction of buckets in connection with a cylindrical hub; also,
in a new and peculiar-gate, by which the feed ot' water f the sleeve S, which works upon the shoulder T of the to the wheel is regulated, and in the pec'ular arrangement of its various parts, the. whole forming a wheel which uses the water lirst by direct 'action and reaction on the same bucket, thereby obtaining greater power from the same amount ot' water than can be had otherwise.
A, in the drawings, are the guides which conduct thewater fromthe iiume on tothe buckets, in the direction of the line of motion, and are rigidly Vsecured at top tothe ring B, and at bottom to the projecting liange C, of the case D.
E are the buckets, each cast in one piece, of the form shown iu iig. 3, so that the water has a direct action upon the perpendicular portion thereof, and a reaction upon the curved incline of the lower part of said bucket. i
F is a cylindrical hub, provided with flange G,to extend over the top of-the. buckets, which should be ot' the same width of said flange.
The buckets are .secured to this cylindrical hub, which is closed at the bottom, and secured to the vertical shaft H.
I is a cap, made in two or moreV sections, fitting closely together, and secured in place by being bolted to the ring B. lhe centre of this cap rises in the shape of a hollow tube, surrounding the vertical shaft, as shown in tig. 4, and is provided with a shoulder, J, upon which sets the prolongation K, of the skeletonbox L, which surrounds the vertical shaft H.
When repairs to the hub or buckets are necessary,
any section of the cap may be removed, by which position against the shaft H, to retain it in a vertical position. Lhe skeleton boxes are cast in' one piece, of the form shown in the drawings.
O'is a circular metallic bami, of suflicient width to cover the openings tothe guides, its bottom edge-resting upon the ange G. v
Standards P are secured to and rise from the cap I; to the upper ends of these standards arefulcrumed the arms or levers Q.v
The outer ends of these arms enter slots in liftingbraces It, the lower ends of which are secured to the band O. v
The inner ends of these arms enter proper slots in cap.'
A lever, U, secured to this sleeve, andfulcrumed toy a similarstandard, furnishes the means of raising or lowering the band O, the whole forming a new, novel, and very etiicient gate for the exclusion or admission ,ofwater to the wheel; one .very easily' operated, be-
cause' the pressure is equal all around it.
V shows the bottom of a Hume, in section, showing .the manner of setting this wheel, the case D projecting through said bottom, the under side of the 4ilange C resting upon said bottom.
The lower end of the shaft H, is secured in thev usuallmanner. v
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-. y
The bucket E, above described, in combination with the cylindrical hub F, andthe tlange G, when constructedand operating as above set forth.
Also, the band-gate O,`standards P, arms Q, sleeve l S, lifting-braces R,'and level' U, when arranged and operating substantially as set forth, shown, and de- ALMnnoN NEWMAN, J. E. NEWMAN.
