To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VALLACE VILLIARD PARSONS, a citizen of the United States, residingat Washington, in the District of Oolumbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanism for Locking Split Bolts and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The objects of my invention are: 1. To provide eiiicient mechanism, connected up to a screw-jack, adapted to engage the ends of a splitor two-membered bolt and to spread said ends in a preferably threadless nut, and to insert a retaining-key between said ends. 2. To provide means, forming part of the aforesaid mechanism, for closing the ends of the bolt on the key to hold the nut. 3. To provide means for adjusting the rear portion of the screw-jack to suit the position of the head of the bolt. 4. To provide means for adjusting, supporting and steadying the forward part of the screwejack to suit the requirements of the nut-end of the bolt.
With these objects in view, and others appearing as the specification proceeds, the invention comprehends the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts of a device characterized by my invention, as will be fully hereinafter set forth in the specification, summed up in the claims, and illustrated in the drawings, in which latter:
Figure 1 is an elevation of the screw-jack, together with the mechanism for spreading the ends of the bolt, for inserting a retaining key therebetween, and for closing the ends, and showing, also, in section, a railway-rail and ordinary fish-plates, and a bolt, carrying a collar, passing therethrough; Fig. 2 is a central, vertical, longitudinal section through the mechanism for spreading the ends of the bolt, for inserting a retaining-ley therebetween, and for closing the ends of the bolt; Fig. 3 is an end view of the key-inserting block Fig. 4 is a perspective detail view of the slidable member removed from its carrief-sleeve, Fig. 5 is a detached, detail View of the supporting-legs of my device; Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view of the ends of the bolt, the collar, and the retaining-key 5 and Fig. 7 is a detail view of the retaining-key.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates a railway-rail, B the ordinary side fish-plates, and C a bolt passing therethrough. This bolt is dcsirably two-membered, i. c., has a shank in two separate members, with a solid head c, the ends of the bolt being provided with a V-shaped inout c2` The bolt carries a collar c, which is preferably threadless, and desirably has a cone-shaped opening ci therethrough.
A retaining-key c5 is adapted to be forced through the ends of the bolt and into the collar c3 by mechanism hereinafter described, and said key comprises a truncated coneshaped body or head c6 and a coneor wedgeshaped wing c7 extending from the base of the cone-shaped body-portion c6.
The mechanism for spreading the ends of the bolt, for forcing the retaining-key c5 therein, and for closing the said ends over the retaining-lrey comprises the following elements:
A hollow sleeve D is eXteriorly threaded, as at d and interiorly threaded, as at cl2, and is provided with a head at one end, as at cl3, and carries a screw-collar' d* at the opposite end tightly 'fitting said end. If desired, a set-screw may be used in addition to retain the collar on the sleeve; but this is unnecessary if the collar is made so as tightly to fit the sleeve.
Adapted to be screwed into one end of the sleeve D is a screw-member E, provided with a head c.
Adapted to reciprocate in the other end of the sleeve D is the shank 7 of a member F provided with an oblong-shaped solid head f2 formed with a (lished-out, V-shaped endportionf3.
The head]l2 of the member F is ada ted to project into a key-inserting block G, t irough a substantially oblong channel g formed therethrough. This block may comprise a substantially circular casting of metal, provided with a circumferential beveled portion g? at one end and a xl-shaped incut g3 also at the end and intersecting the channel g at rightangles.
Adapted to support the sleeve D is a hollow interiorly threaded, horizontal arm 7L, of a jack I-I, and through this arm the threaded sleeve D is screwed. The jack is provided with an arched portion 7L terminating in a down-turned arm h4, provided with a concavity l on its inner surface. The arm 7L" terminates in oppositely-extending feet rrx adapted to bear upon the lower flanges of the fish-plate B, set-screws 7L passing throuOh the feet, whereby the leg or arm lz may e raised or lowered to adjust the concavity h5 so as to bear upon and 'receive the head c of the bolt C.
Adapted to steady the jack toward the forward portion thereof, or that portion near the arm h, are legs hl which are disposed transversely of the arched portion h3, and are preferably provided with outwardly extending or flaring feet as. Bolts, or analogous devices, hg carrying tightening nuts pass through the legs k7. lt will be noted that these supporting means are adjustable, and may be shifted to suit the eXigencies of a particular situation.
To position the jack and to assemblerthe parts of my mechanism, the operation may be described substantially as follows: rl"he jack is positioned so that the arch h3 extends over the top of the rail A, and the set-screws h6 screwed down or up until the ccncavity 711" is flush with the bolt-head c, which con cavity receives and cradles the bolt-head and bears thereagainst. The legs 7N are also adiusted so that they support the arm 7L of the jacli in the proper position, e., so that the opening through the hollow arm 7L is in the same plane as the bolt C. The sleeve l) carrying the screw member E is then, or previously, screwed through the hollow arm 7L of the jaclz, and thereupon the collar d4 is screwed on the end of the sleeve. The member F is then slipped into the end of the sleeve D, and the key-inserting blocl G is placed on the head f2, the head f2 telescoping into opening or channel g extending through the heyzinserting. block. The head CG of retaining-hey c5 is then placed in the V-shaped inout g3 of the hey-inserting blocl G. A strong wrench is then applied to the head d3 and, being turned, moves the sleeve D forward on the threads of the horizontal arm h, causing the key-inserting blool, against which collar di on the sleeve D bears, to bring the ley c5 against the ends ofthe bolt C; the sharp edge of wing c7 of the retaining-hey c5 engagingin the if-shaped guiding inout c2 at the end of the bolt C and forcing the two n1 einbers of the bolt apart; whereupon contini movement of the sleeve D forces the retaining-key between the two members of the bolt until the wing c7 of the retaining-hey has entered far enough to s read the two members of the bolt against tie cone-shaped walls of the opening c* of the collar c3. The head cf' of the retaining-key is then entirely .vithin the two members of the bolt.
To lock the retaining-key in place, after having thus been positioned between the two members of the bolt, a strong wrench is applied to the head e of screw-member E, which moves the screw-member forward in the sleeve D, the inner end of the screwmember abutting against the inner end of shank f of member F, causing the same to slide forward, bringing the {lished-out, V-
eaose shaped end f3 of the head f2 of member F forcibly against the ends of the bolt C,'and causing the ends of the two-membered bolt to be closed, or brought together, over the head of the retaining-key.
lt will be no ted that, during the operation of closing the ends of the bolt over the retaining-key, key-inserting block G remains in its position of forcible pressure against the retaining-key, which key has been forced against the collar c3. Thus, there is no possible danger of the collar having any movement whatever laterally on the bolt C. And, when the ends of the bolt C have been closed against or over the retaining-key, the bolt and collar c3 are 'firmly locked, and will never worl loose. lt will also be noted that in my mechanism for inserting the retaining-key c5 and for closing the ends of the bolt C thereover, l do away with all hammering, which l have found to be injurious in securing` a permanent locl; of the bolt and collar c3; and that, instead of such violent hammering, causing jar and strain, l apply a gradual pressure to force open the ends of the bolt C, w iereby to insert the retaining-key, and also a gradual pressure to cause closing of the ends of the bolt over such retaining-key, rllhus l secure a permanent loclr, with no danger of the bolt Gand collar c3 working loose in use, and with no weakening of the parts by hammering.
From the above description, taken in con'- nection with the drawings, it will be seen that my mechanismv is adapte-d for use in structural iron work generally, but especially in locking bolts and collars on ish-plates of' railway-rails, where its use is eminently advantageous.
Having thus fully described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is: l. ln a device for locking two-membered or split-bolts, a hollow sleeve carrying operating means, longitudinally-movable means disposed within and cooperatively engaging with the sleeve and projecting beyond vthe ends thereof, and a key-inserting member carried by one projecting end of said longitudinally-movable means.
2. ln a device for locking two-membered or split-bolts, a hollow sleeve carrying operating means, longitudinally-movable means disposed within and cooperatively engaging with the operating means of the sleeve and projecting beyond the ends of the latter, and a het -inserting member carried by one projecting end of said longitudinally-movable means. v
3. ln a device for locking twc-membered or split-bolts, a hollow sleeve carrying operating means, longitudinally-movable means disposed within and cooperatively engaging with the sleeve and projecting beyond the ends thereof, a key-inserting member carried by one projecting end ol said longitudinallyniovable means, and supporting means lor the sleeve.

In a device for locking two-membered or ksplit-bolts, a hollow sleeve carrying` operatingl means, loneitudinally-movable means disposed within and cooperatively eiigagiiu; with the sleeve and projecting; beyond the ends thereof, a key-inserting member carried by one projecting end ol said longitudinallymovable means, and supporting; means for Vmember within which the sleeve is disposed and provided with an arched extension.

In a device for lockingl two-membered or split-bolts, a hollow sleeve. carrying operatirw' means, longitudinally movable means disposed within and cooperatively engagingi with the sleeve and projecting` beyond the ends thereof, a key-inserting member carried by one projecting,` end of said longitudinallymovable means, supporting means for the sleeve, and a supplemental supporting-device carried by the supporting means.

In afdevice for locking two-membered or split-bolts,a hollow sleeve carrying operating means, longitudinally movable means disposed within and cooperatively engaging; With the sleeve and projecting,l beyond the ends thereof, a key-inserting' member carried by one projecting end ol' said longitudinallymovable means, supporting means for the sleeve, formed with an arched extension, and a supplemental depending supporting-device carried by the arch.

In a device for locking` two-membered or split-bolts, a hollow sleeve carrying operating means, longitudinally movable means disposed within and cooperatively engaing with the sleeve and projectingl beyond the ends thereof, a key-inserting, member carried by one projecting end of said longitinlinallymovable means, and supporting means iior the sleeve; said supporting means comprisingy a tubular member within which the sleeve is disposed and provided with an arched extension, and depending supporting'- legs carried by the arch.

In a device for locking two-inembered or split-bolts, a hollow, iiiteriorly-threatled sleeve, a scie'-,v-ineinl er screwed into the sleeve and projecting beyond one end thereof, a member reciprot-.atingl in the sleeve and extendingI beyond the other end thereof and adapted to be actuated by the screw-member, and a key-inserting member carried by the projecting ond oi' the reciprocatingl member.

In a device for locking tvv'o-membered or split-bolts, a hollow, interiorly-tln'eaded sleeve, a screw-.member screwed into the sleeve and projertiiu;l beyond one end thereol", a member reciprocntiiig in the sleeve and exteniling;I beyond the other end thereof and adapted to be actuated by the screw-inember, said reciprocai-ting` member being,I provided with a head its projecting end, and a keyinserting member provided with an opening therethrough engaged by the head ol the reciprocating member.

In a device for locking two-ineinbered or split-bolts, a hollow, inleriorly-lhreaded sleeve, a screw-member screwed into the sleeve and prelim/ting` beyond one end thereol", a member reciprocaliin; in the sleeve and extendingl beyond tno other end thereoi and adapted lobe actuated by the screw-nieml'mr, and a. key-inserting member carried by the projecting' end ol the reciprocartiiu;l member and provided at one end with a ii-shaped incnt.

In a device 'l'or locking` two-membered or split-bolts, a hollow, interiorly-threaded sleeve, a screw-member screwed into the sleeve and projecting beyond one end thereof, amember reciprocating in the sleeve and extending beyond the other end thereof and adapted to be actuated by the screw-member, said reciprocating member being provided with a head at its projecting end, said head being provided at its end with a V-shaped incut, and a key-inserting member provided with an opening therethrough engaged by the head of the reciprocating member.
16. ln a device for locking two-membered or split-bolts, a hollow, interiorly-threaded sleeve, a screw-member screwed into the sleeve and projecting beyond one end thereof, a member reciprocating in the sleeve and extending beyond the other end thereof and adapted to be actuated by the screw-member, said reciprocating member being provided with a head at its projecting end, said head being provided at its end with a V-sh'aped, dished-out incut, and a key-inserting member provided with an opening therethrough engaged by the head of the reciprocating member.

In a device for locking two-membered or split-bolts, a hollow, interiorly-threaded sleeve carrying a collar at one end, a screwmember screwed into the sleeve and projecting beyond one end thereof, a member reciprocating in the sleeve and extending beyond the other end thereof and adapted to be actuated by the screw-member, said reciprocating member being provided with a head at its projecting end, and a key-inserting member provided with an opening therethrough engaged by the head of the reciprocating member.

In a device for locking two membered or split-bolts, a hollow, interiorly-threaded sleeve carrying a collar at one end, a screwmember screwed into the sleeve and projecting beyond one end thereof, said projecting end being provided with a head, a member reciprocating in the sleeve and extending beyond the other end thereof and adapted to be actuated by the screw-member, said reciprocating member being provided with a head at its projecting end, and a key-inserting member provided with an opening therethrough engaged by the head of the reciprocating member.
19. ln a`device for locking two-membered or split-bolts, a hollow, interiorlyand exteriorly-threaded sleeve carrying a collar at one end, a screw-member screwed into the sleeve and projecting beyond one end thereof, said projecting end being provided with a head, a member reciprocating in the sleeve and extending beyond the other end thereof and adapted to be actuated by the screwmember, said reciprocating member being provided with a head at its projecting end, and a key-inserting member provided with an opening therethrough engaged by the head of the reciprocating member.

In a device for locking two membered or split-bolts, a hollow, interiorlyand exteriorly threaded sleeve, a screw member screwed into the sleeve and projecting beyond one end thereof, a member reciprocating in the sleeve and extending beyond the other end thereof and adapted to be actuated by the screw-member, said reciprocating member being provided with a head at its projecting end, a key-inserting member provided with an opening therethrough engaged by the head of the reciprocating member, and supporting means for the sleeve.

In a device for locking two-membered or split-bolts, a hollow, interiorlyand exteriorly-threaded sleeve, a screw member screwed into the sleeve and projecting beyond one end thereof, a member reciprocating in the sleeve and extending beyond the other end thereof and adapted to be actuated by the screw-member, said reciprocating member being provided with a head at its projecting end, a key-inserting member provided with an opening therethrough engaged by the head of the reciprocating member, and supporting-means for the sleeve, said supporting means comprising in part a horizontal, hollow, interiorly threaded arm through which the sleeve is screwed.

In a device for locking two-membered or split-bolts, a hollow, interiorlyand exteriorly threaded sleeve, a screw member screwed into the sleeve and projecting beyond one end thereof, a member reciprocating in the sleeve and extending beyond the other end thereof and adapted to be actuated by the screw-member, said reciprocating member being provided with a head at its projecting end, a key-inserting member provided with an opening therethrough engaged by the head of the reciprocating member, and supporting means for the sleeve,'said supporting means comprising, in part, a hori- Zontal, hollow, interiorly threaded arm through which the sleeve is screwed and a substantially perpendicular arm adapted to bear against the head of the two membered bolt.

In a device for locking two-membered or split-bolts, a hollow, interiorlyand exteriorly-threaded sleeve, a screw-member screwed into the sleeve and projecting beyond one end thereof, a member reciprocating in the sleeve and extending beyond' the other end thereof and adapted to be actuated by the screw-member, said reciprocating member being provided with a head at its projecting end, a key-inserting member provided with an opening therethrough engaged by the head of the reciprocating member, and supporting means for the'sleeve, said supporting means comprising, in part, a hori- Zontal, hollow, interiorly-threaded arm through Which the sleeve is screwed and a substantially perpendicular arm adapted to bear against the head of the two-membered bolt and provided with a coneavity adapted to cradle the bolt-head.
24. In a device for locking two member-ed or split-bolts, a hollow, interiorlyand exteriorly-threaded sleeve, a

In a device for locking tWo-membered or split-bolts, a holloiv, interiorlyand exteriorly-tln'eaded sleeve, a screw-nsomber screwed .into the sleeve and projecting beyond. one end thereof, a mei'nbcr reciprocating in the sleeve and extending beyond the other end thereof and adapted to be actuated by the screw-member, said reciprocating member being provided with a head at its projecting end, a key-inserting member provided With an opening therethrough engaged by the head of the reciprocating member 5 and supporting means for the sleeve, comprising, in part, a horizontal, hollow, interiorly-threaded arm through which the sleeve is screwed, a substantially perpendicular arm adapted to bear against the bolt-head and provided with a concavity adapted to cradle the bolt-head and, at its end, with oppositely-extending feet, and set-screws passing through said feet.

In a device Vfor locking tWo-membered or split-bolts, a hollow, interiorlyand exteriorly-threaded sleeve, a screW-memlnn screvved into the sleeve and projecting beyond one end thereof, a member reciprocating in the sleeve and extending beyond the other end thereof and adapted to be actuated by the screw-member, said reciprocating member being provided with a head at its projecting end, a key-inserting member provided With an opening therethrough engaged by the head of the reciprocating member; and supporting means 'for the sleeve, comprisinfr a' horizontal, hollou, interiorlythreaded arm through which the sleeve is screwed, an arched portion made integral with and merging into one end of said arm, said arched portion terminating, at the other end, in a substantially perpendicular arm screw-member screwed into the sleeve and projecting beadapted to bear against the bolt-head and provided with a concavity adapted to cradle the bolt-head and, at its end, with oppositely- (-xtending feet, set-saeivs passing through said feet, and supporting-legs carried by the arched portion and disposed transversely thereof.
