To all whom it may concern.' I Be it known that I, HENRY L. SLAGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at j Springfield, in the county of Clark and State o Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Abrasive heels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to abrasive wheels, and more particularly to grinding and polishing Wheels, the body portion of which is formed of a plastic composition.
The object of the invention is to provide a Wheel of this character which will contain a minimum amount of material and will utilize that material to the fullest extent, leaving but a small amount of the same to be thrown away when the wheel is discarded g and further, to provide such a wheel with strengthening means to overcome the tendency of the wheel to break or fly to pieces from centrifugal force.
With these objects in view my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in certain parts and combinations hereinafter to bc described, and then more i particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a radial sectional view of an abrasive wheel embodying my invention 5 Fig. 2 is a similar view of a wheel embodying a modified form of the invention; Fig. 3 is a detail view of the annular strengthening plate; and Fig. -l is a side elevation of one of the side plates.
In carrying out my invention I cast the bodyportion 1 of the wheel from a suitable plastic composition and in the form of an annulus having a large interior diameter and I provide this annulus or body portion along its inner edge with a dovetailed portion 2, which is preferably formed by cutting away the side portions of the annulus near the inner edges thereof to form annular recesses 3 having" shoulders 4 extending at substantially right angles to the diameter of the Wheel. In order to strengthen this plate and overcome the tendency of the same to break With a strengthening plate, which, in the present instance, consists of an annular core ring 5 cast into the annulus and having an Letters Patent Serial No. 426,029.

interior diameter substantially equal to the interior diameter of the annulus, whereby its inner edge lies substantially flush with the inner edge of the annulus. This strengthening plate is provided with a series of op ositely extending lugs 6 which are preferably arranged at intervals about the periphery of the strengthening )late and extend at substantially right ang es thereto. This plate is also provided with a series of recesses 7 formed in the body portion thereof and preferably alternating with the projections 6. Thus, when the strengthening plate is cast in the annulus, the plastic material of which the annulus is formed will enter the recesses 7 and will surround the projections 6, thereby firmly securing the strengthening plate within the annulus and offering sufficient resistance to the centrifugal force of the wheel to overcome the tendency of the same to break.
The annulus is referably )rovided about its inner edge witi a base plate 8 which is rigidly secured thereto, preferably by securing the same to the inner edge of the strengthening plate 5, and, in the )resent instance, the base )late and strengt lening plate are shown as `lormed integral and thc base plate is here shown as of a width substantially equal to the width of the dovetailed portion 2 of the annulus and having its outer edges beveled in such a manner that these edges correspond to the inclined edges of the dovetailed portion and form a continuation of the same. If desired, this base plate may also be provided with a circumferential radially arranged strengthening ribY 9, extending inwardly therefrom, which adds materially to the strength of the Wheel. I prefer to support this annulus from the mandrel by means of suitable side plates 10 having hub portions 11 adapted to iit over the mandrel and having near their outer edges laterally extending portions 12 provided with radially arranged flanges 13 having their inner faces inclined to correspond to the inclination of the sides of the dovetailed portion 2 of the annulus and adapted to lit within the annular recesses 3 formed in the sides of the annulus. These flanges 13 are of a radial width substantially equal to the width of the recesses 3 plus the thickness of the base plate 8, which, as
stated, forms a continuation of the dovetailed portion of the annulus. Thus, when the fianges have been placed in engagement with the dovetailed portion of the annulus and the plates clamped'in position upon the mandrel, the base plate is clamped rmly in engagement with the shoulder formed by the laterally extending portions 12 of the side plates, which have been turned down to render the same true, and the outer'ends of the flanges 13 will lie close to the shoulders 4 of the recesses 3, thus forming a strong, compact connection between the annulus and the supporting plate which locks the annulus immovably within the plates and tends to resist any outward movement thereof which might result from the great velocity at which the wheel is rotated. The side plates 1() may, if desired, be provided with radial ribs 17 which greatly strengthen the same without adding materially to the weight thereof.
The strengthening plate which 1 have above described as applied to the annulus 1 is equally applicable to the old form of solid Wheel 14, as shown in Fig. 2, in which form the central o )ening of the wheel is of a diameter only su cient to receive the bushing 15 which fits over the mandrel and the strength- V ening plate 16 has its interior diameter substantially equal to the interior diameter of this opening so that the inner edge of the plate ies substantially flush with the inner edge of the wheel. The construction ofthe strengthening plate in other respects and its operation aresimilar to that above described.
Thus, it will be seen that l have provided an abrasive wheel requiring in its make-up but a minimum amount of material and so constructed that the body portion thereof may be utilized to the fullest extent without danger of the wheel breaking, and, when the wheel is finally discarded, there will remain but a very small amount' of the abrasive material to be thrown away. Further, inasmuch as these wheels usually break first at the center, it will be seen that these strengthening plates are so placed and are of such a character as to render a maximum resistance to the tendency of the wheel to break; and further, that the strengthening plate is provided with lugs so arranged as to offer a maximum resistance to the centrifugal force of the wheel, and further, thatV the wheel is so supported on the mandrel, by means of the side plates, as to prevent all movement of the annulus and form a practically solid wheel which is well balanced and of a strength greater than the strength of the solid Wheels.
I Wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.
Having thus fully described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. An abrasive wheel comprising a body portion formed of plastic material and having a central opening, and a strengthening plate cast within said body portion and having an opening of a diameter substantially equal to the interior diameter of said body portion and having an exterior diameter less than the exterior diameter of said body portion.
2. An abrasive wheel comprising a body portion formed of plastic material, and a strengthening plate cast within said body portion and comprising an annular plate having a series of oppositely extending projections arranged at intervals about the periphery thereof and having a series of apertures formed therein at points removed from the periphery thereof and alternating with said projections. 3. An abrasive wheel comprising an annulus having its sides cut away near the inner edges thereof to form a dovetailed portion on the inner edge thereof and removable side plates having flanges adapted to engage said dovetailed portion and to lie within the recesses formed by cutting away ther sides of said annulus.
Ll. ln an abrasive wheel, the combination, with an annulus, and side plates adapted to grip the sides thereof, said side lates having annular shoulders on the inner faces thereof, of a base plate rigidly secured to the inner edge of said annulus and adapted to engage the shoulders on said side plates.
5. 1n an abrasive wheel, the combination, with an annulus, and side plates adapted to grip the sides thereof, said side lates having annular shoulders on the inner' faces thereof, of a strengthening plate cast within said annulus, and a base plate secured to the inner edge of said strengthening plate and adapted to engage the shoulders on said side plates.
6. In an abrasive wheel, the combination, with an annulus having a dovetailed portion at the inner edge thereof and side plates having annular flanges adapted to engage said dovetailed portion, of a strengthening plate cast within said annulus, and a base plate rigidly secured to the inner edge of said strengthening plate and adapted to form a continuation of said dovetailed portion.
