' Application filed 31111624 Too-ll wfzmn i1. concern: i Be it known that}, Hon-non P. Bnown, ail citizen of the United States, residing at l Emeryville, in the county of r-ilameda and State of @al-iforni-a, have invented new and l l useful Improvements in Manifold-Books, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to wliatarekmmn as manifold books, wherein duolieat-e-or triplicate entries are made of sales for shi ping and other receipts, and generally for al pur poses for which such books can e employed.
My invention. consists in the novel construction of such a book, and details which will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanyin drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a p an of a blank sheet slitted before being folded into book form. Fig.2 shows an unfolded sheet embodying the invention. Fig. 3 is a perspective of a pad embodying the invention.
In the manufacture of manifolding salesbooks which are made up of separate or in I dependent leaves, and which leaves are usually numbered consecutively, it frel some of the numbered 1 leaves are lost, or accidentallyleft out, or that in the binding two pages of these-me number are inserted. This gives rise to frequent uestions and misunderstandings between t 1e managers and clerks and other employees, as to what has become of the missing numbers; and in cases where the number is duplicated it enables a dishonest clerk to K embezzle his employers funds. These books with their independent leaves, in spite of the disadvantages, are the only form heretofore used for certain classes of work, particularly l where a clerks or other voucher was to remain after the sheets had been detached. l
in salesbooks of a continuous form, in which a single strip of paper is folded lengt-lc i wise upon itself to form the several leaves, it is impossible to have a \'oi.lchcr remaining in the book; besides, it is difficult to bind a book of this sort satisl'ucloriiy'.
The chief advantage of the form of book that since all lhc loaves are attached together they can be consecutively numbered and thcrc is no possibility of any of the leaves being lost or misiuinibcrcd, or the llUll'lbOl'S duplicated.
The object of my invention is to provide I an improved snlcsbook which will combine all the advantages of both the single loaf form of book and the continuous form. That I Z l l I continuous I l l l I i I v non-Ace p. BROWN, 0r; LMERYVILLIC. OALIFORNLA.

1908. Serial No. 440,151.
s to say, my object is lo furnish a book in which all theleavcs shall be made from at single strip of bound together, but in which each individual leaf shall be connected to the other leaves only at the stub end, and which leaves may be consecutively numbered; which books may be printed and bound up with vouchers attac 16d, and in which book the original and duplicating leaves are easily detachable, leaving the remaining portions of the book with their consecutive numbering, and also the voucher, if desired, for future reference.
In constructing this improved book, a continucus sheet of pa er A is em loyed, this sheet having a widt equal to t e required length of the leaves and their stubs. The sheet is folded in zigzag or other suitable form, on lines indicated at 2, with the folded lines extending across its width; and each folded section may be numbered, lettered, or characterized in any suitable manner. The sheet is then slitted or cut, as at 3, along the folded lines to a certain distance from one edge, leavin the stub portion 4 which connects integral y all the leaves thus formed each fold of the original strip corresponding to a leaf, as in Fig. .1, or series of leaf sections, Fig. 2. The strip A may be of any suitable length, and the number of folds may correspond to the number of pages to be in the book, including original and duplicate, and voucher, if desired. The pad thus formed by folding and cutting a sheet may be bound up into book form in any suitable manner, or inserted into cli s or holders of any appropriate and well l1OWIl description. I have shown thcpad as being bound through the stub 4 by suitable means, as the staples 5.
The leaves, or leaf sections, where they attech to the stub or to each other, may be scored or perforated, as shown at 6, to enable them to be readily detached. When a book is thus bound up, it has every appearance of a bound individual leaf book, ca )able of every use that such a book is capable of; but in addition to that it has a continuous si uh; and since the numbering is put on the original sheet A by a numbering machine before slitting or folding sheet A, it provides all the safeguards against error in numbering of the finished book, that are furnished by the ordinary continuous book. With this construction it is possible to secure the carbonpa'pcr integrally connected and sheet directly to the book; and a book thus I or not,'can be readily held in any tag-board,
or any ordinary standard salesbook cover or cli ' 'lhe separated sections of the original sheet A may be of any appropriate length, depending on the size of the book, and on the character of the book. These leaf sections may be of any length and ma be in single or duplicate form; as shown in Fig. 2, 7 represents the original leaf portion, and 8 the ,duplitate leaf; and if a voucher is desired the strip is again perforated along the line 9, leaving the voucher portion 10 permanently attached to the stub 4.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim and desire to secureby Letters Patent is 1. A'manifolding book comprising a plurality of leaves formed from a single sheet of paper, said leaves each having a stub portion to which the leaf is con ected along weakened lines, the stubs of al the leaves being permanentl connected successivel to each other and al the stubs bound to etliei all their stubs carrying an individual cal.
2. A m'anifolding book comprising a plurality of eaves, each leaf having a stub portion to w ich itis connected along weakened lines, the stubs being in one continuous strip and folded zig-zzRg transversely of the leaves, with a leaf for every stub and all the stubs bound together.
In testlmony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HORACE P. BROWN.
