-To"'a Z '11:71pmv 'it mayconcern:
Be 1tknown thatJ, Joux Zanon, a. citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul 1n the county of Washington and State Park, of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in VCorrugated Metallic Culverts, of which thefollowlng is a specification.-
My invention relates to improvements in metal culverts vof the class generally con- Among the principal difficulties connected iththeuse of corrugated pipe for this purlose'is the formation inthe field of a strong, durablejiointor coupling between the culvert sections'y without undue expense. To accomv plish .this eliciently, economically and simply is the object of my invention.
' '.In the drawings, Figure 1 is a. plan of two sections of my culvert 4coupled together. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of Fig. 1 showing the joint or coupling. Fig. 3
is' a detail showino' the ends of two sections of my culvert ready to be fitted together.
The culvert sections A, which vmay be of any suitable length and dialneter, are formed of corrugated metal, preferably galvanized lsheet iron, the end'corrugations of whichare flattened to form smooth sleeves, 1 and2.
The sections A are slightly greater in diameter at one end than at therotherg the dltference being justsuffici'ent to .permltthe smaller end 2 toslip into the larger sleeve l ofthe next section, and thus form a stove pipe `joint. l and 2 are provided with bolt holes 3, whlch register with corresponding holes in the connectingsection when they are tted together.
For the purpose of reinforcing the joint formed by two connecting section'sand'thus secure greaterstrength and durability in the coupling I use a collar 4 adapted to surround the tclescoped portions of the sleeves. This collar is preferably formed of channel iron with the flanges 5 projecting outwardly, theintermediate rib being -perforatedby bolt holes, corresponding in position wlth those Vnrt'lie 'telescoped ends of the culvert sections.
The culvert sections A and collars 4 may These uncorrugated ends or sleevesy only be finished at the factory and when taken into the field to be placed in position, it is necessary to adjust the collar around lhesleeve 1 on one of the secti0ns"andslip the smaller lsleeve. 2 of the adjoining section into place, when the bolts 6 will pass into the perforatlons 3 and etiicient culvert 1s secured.
liaving described my invention, what I 'claim as new and desire to protect by Letters latent, is:
oFF-Ion.
.55.V and through the collar'and'-r. conneeting ends of the culvert. lVhen thus 'connected and properly adjusted a j, simple 1. A culvert comprising a plurality` of sections, aeh having a corrugated vcentral portlon and smooth ends adapted to form a stove. p1pe joint, an outwardly flanged collar formed in one piece to surround said ends when fitted together, said ends and collar being perforated .to receive bolts, and bolts adapted to connect the collar with the 'adlave been littedt-ogether.A
' Q. A culvertcomprising corrugated sec. tions each having smooth ends, one of which 'is slightly greater in (lianietel'tllan the other,
whereby-the adjacent As ectlons may be' fitted together', 1n combmation wlth flanged collar to surrpund 'and reinforce the jointv formed by thus fitting the ends together and adjustable only atthe time of forming ysaid joint. y.
3. A culvert comprising .aplurality of sections, having ay corrugated gentral portion and smooth lends, one Aof greater diameter than the otl 1er, the smaller end. of a section' N. H. lViLLIAMs,
