. OBVILLE PHILLIPS, OF BRAYMER, MISSOURI.
Specification of Letters Patent.
. Patented April 27, 1909.
Application filed. November 3, 1908. Serial No. 460,903.
To all whom it may concern:
it known that LORVILLE Pnnmrrsi a citizen of the United States. residing at Braymer, in the county of Caldwell and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Tire-Stretchers and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates tonew and. useful improvements in wire stretchers and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel device of this character of the lever type which will effectually stretch the wires of the fence from a stationar point or at the se arated i advantageous in practice and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the details of construction and in the novel arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter referred to.
In describing the invention in detail referones will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which,
Figure 1 is a view in top plan illustrating the invention applied to the separated or meeting ends of the wires. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 illustrating the invention acting in conjunction with a stationary ele ment.
In the drawings 1 denotes a lever which may be of any desired length and having one end portion so formed in cross section as to afford efficient and convenient hand grasp to operate the same. To the opposite end portion is suitably secured the anchor hook 2 while to one edge face of the lever intermediate its ends, is a second hook 3 facing oppositely to the hook 2. The shank 4 of the book 2 is provided with the wire clamps 5 which may be of any ordinary or preferred structure.
W hen the device is to be employed as shown in Fig. l. the separatedor meeting ends of the wires or strands 6 are held by the clamps 5 and the lever 1 moved in the direc* tion indicated by the arrow. It is thought to be apparent that this movement will cause thewires or strands 6 to tighten. When the wires or strands 6 have become taut as desired the separated or meeting ends are wrapped as ordinarily one about the other.
In Fig. 2 the invention is shown as acting in conjunction with the post or stationary member 7. In this form of invention the anchor chain 8 is employed. The anchor hook 2 is passed through one of the links of the chain 8 and said chain is passed around the anchor or post 7 and a link thereof is provided with a hook 9 which engages another of the links as is thought to be obvious. This chain 8 is provided with the branch chain 10 which is adapted to engage the hook 3 on the lever after said lever has been moved totighten the wire or strand 11 held by one of the clamps 5.
I claim:
A. device of the character described, comprising a lever having a hook ended member applied laterally to said lever and with its hook projecting beyond one end of said lever, said hook ended member being provided with lateral clamps spaced apart one from theother and adapted for the retention. of oppositely extending wires, said lever also is provided upon one edge thereof at right angles to the edge of said lever to which said hook member is applied with an additional hook facing oppositely to the direction in which the aforesaid hook faces.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ORVILLE PHILLIPS.
Witnesses W M. DEsPAR, FRED WIGHTMAN.
