T o all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB P. HoL'r'b HoUsER, a citizen of the'United States, and a resident of New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
lThe obj ect of the invention is to produce a device of the class specified having features of novelty and advantage and more espe cially to produce a device of this character in which substantially all the parts are formed up from sheet metal, producing a light, strong, construction which can be manufactured at a comparatively low cost.
Figure 1 is a front view with part broken away to show construction. Fig. 2 is a central side elevation. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
A iiat ieee of sheet metal is shaped upto form a tu ular casing a/ having the attaching iianges a2 a2. In the front of this casing an aperture is formed having side flanges a" c standing out 'from the casing. A tripping lever l) is pivotally supported between these 'langes a3 a having a toe-piece t extending outside ofthe casing, the other end t2 extending inside of the casing and adapted to disengage the hereinafter described interlocking parts. The casing is also provided with one or more inwardljT projecting shoulders which, as illustrated, are in the form of serrations c2 formed in a plate c which is fixedly secured in the opening in the casing just above the tripping lever.
d is the bolt formed from sheet metal into tubular form, the edges of the plate lrom which the bolt is formed being separated to produce a slot d on the front side of the bolt. At the lower front side of the bolt arms d? are formed which, as shown, are bent around into circular form to produce a ltoot-piece frame e. A cap f 'fits down over this frame, being slotted at one side as at flo to embrace said arms, and is fixedly secured to said frame as by swaging over its lower end to interlock with the lower edge thereof. A studjIl is secured to the cap and projects from the under side thereof, being recessed and threaded to receive a screwjl2 by means of which the shoe h is secured to the bolt. A serrated bar g is located inside of said bolt, pivotally supported at the lower end thereof, and has its serrated face presented to the slot in the front side ol' said bolt. A spring g presses this bar toward said slot. The engaging shoulders t2 on the casing are adapted in size to Iit and slide in the slot in the lront side of the bolt to engage with the sei-rations on the bar g. This bar is provided with a stop g2 at its top to limit the downward movement in the casing.
A shoe h is mounted in the foot-piece and is adapted for relative movement with respect to said foot-piece and bolt, being normally pressed out by a spring t in order that when the bolt is forced down to bring this foot-piece into engagement with the loor the spring will be compressed slightly and so exert a continual pressure ol the shoe against the floor. A spring t' connects the bolt with the casing so that when the serrated bar g is disengaged from the interlocking shoulder on the casing the bolt will he returned to its normal position.
I claim as my invention:
1. ln an article ol' the character described ra tubular sheet metal casing, an engaging shoulder on said casing and projecting into the interior thereol', a tubular sheet metal bolt fitting within said casing and l'orined with a slot in its l'ront side, a serrated bar pivotally supported in said bolt with its serrated face opposite said slot and adapted to engage said projection on the interior ol said casing, a spring to normally press said serrated bar into engagement with said proj ection, a tripping lever pivot-ally supported 1n said casing and engaging said serrated bar, a laterally extending loot-piece secured to said bolt, and a spring to return the bolt to normal position.
2. In an article oll the character described a tubular sheet metal casing, a projection l'roni said casing extending into the interior thereol', a tubular sheet metal bolt adapted to slide in said casing and having a slot on its l'ront side adapted to receive said projection l'rom said casing', a serrated bar located within said bolt and pivoted to the lower end thereof with its serrated l'ace opposite said slot, means lor normally pressing said bar toward said slot and into engagement with said shoulder on said casing, a laterally extending l`ra1ne l'ormed integrally with said bolt at the lower end thereol', a cap iitting down over said l'ralne and 'lixedly secured thereto, a shoe secured in said l'raine, a tripping lever pivotal ly supported in said casing lll) . said casing and adapted to move lengthwise therein, said bolt having a slot in its vfront side adapted to receive said plate, a serrated bar located within said bolt and pivoted at the lower end thereol" with its serrated face opposite said slot, a spring pressing said serrated bar into engagement with the projections on said plate, a lever pivotally supported in said casing' and extending through the aperture therein into operative relation with said serrated bar, a spring to return the bolt to normal position, and a foot-piece eX- tending laterally from said bolt comprising a frame formed integrali)T with said bolt, a cap iitting about and secured to said frame, and a shoe mounted in the under side olI said footpiece and adapted 'lor movement relatively thereto.
4. 'In an article of the character described a bolt formed up from sheet instal, a laterallyT extending foot-piece frame integral therewith, a cap fitting on and secured to said foot-piece frame, a stud secured to and projecting from the under side olI said cap, said stud being recessed and threaded, a shoe having a sliding fit in said foot-piece frame, a screw passing through said shoe and engaging said threaded stem, and a spring located between said cap and said shoe, as and for the purposes specified.
