Description
ntmi gamut gawd @with Letters Patent No. 91,947, dated June 29, 1869.
DUST-DEFLECTOR FOR. RAILROAD-CARS.
The Schedule referred t in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. P. O. LoWNsDALn, of Port- 'land, in the county of Multnomah, and State of Oregon, h'ave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dust-Deflectors for Railroad-Cars, 85e.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled-in the art to make anduse the-same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in dust-deflectors for the windows of railroadcars and other means of land conveyance; and
The invention consists in a novel construction of such deiiectors, whereby, when applied to a car, 'if such car is moving with any degree of speed, it will produce a suficient draught in the properdirection to carry ofi" the dust, 86e., from the windows, which would otherwise have a tendency to enter or lbe drawn into 'the same. p
In the accompanying plate of drawings, my improvements in deilectors for car-windows are illustrated- Figure 1 being a front View of a window, having thorn applied to the sides thereof', and
Figures 2 and 3, edge views of the deiectors, but in different directions.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A, in the drawings, represents my improved deectors.
These deiectors are to be made of sheet-iron, brass, or other suitable metal or material, of the proper proportions in theirseveral directions, as in width, length, and thickness, and with a funnel or tapered shape, as
shown in the drawings, forming an air-passage, B, the Y mouth, C, of' which is larger than the discharge D.
The deflectors are each secured to a plate, E; which is adapted to be attached to the side ot a car, by any suitable means, in such a manner as to be readily removed therefrom, and-changed to accommodate the direction in which the lcar is to move. When the dellectors are used, they are hung upon the car alongside of the windows, withtthe mouth O of the air-passage toward the front end of the car, when, by the forward motion of the car, the air is thus caused to rush through s uch air-passage, producing a draught in front of the window, across the same, suicient to carry olf and away therefrom the dust whichl would otherwise have a tendency to pass into the car through the window.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Pateut-,
The metallic dust-deeetor for cars, consisting of the funnel-shaped case A, enclosing the inner triangular-shaped projection, both placed upon the plate E, in reverse positions with relation to each other, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
The above specification 'of my invention signed by me, this 23d dayof' September, 18 '7.
J. P. O. LOWNSDALE.
